Two young ladies, one a dashing
blonde, the other a quiet looking girl,
who might be overlooked in a crowd,
were discussing their several wants
which the present financial stringency
interdicted. One wished to spend the
winter in the gay society of a Northern
city, and deplored the fact that her fa¬
ther’s “closeness” would imprison her
in the dull Southern town. The other
had recently finished the course of one
of Georgia’s female institutions and
was anxious to pursue her musical
studies at a Northern conservatory,
that she might assist her father in the
education of her younger sisters.

A RAILROAD RUMOR.
That the Athens Branch Will be Made
the Main Line of the Oa. R. R.
Now comes a wild rumor about the
Georgia railroad that causes a sensa¬
tion among the railroad people of this
city who hare heard it, although in
truth, few of them have given it any
credence whatever.
The story is to the effect that the
Georgia railroad is going to be so
changed as to run the main line by
way of Athens to Atlanta, thus short¬
ening the distance between this city
and Augusta. It is told that a move¬
ment has been started by the Georgia
road people to make this change with¬
out much delay, so as to reclaim that
patronage they once had between At¬
lanta and Athens before the Seaboard
Air-Line, a much shorter route, was
built. This will make the main line
of the Georgia run off from Union
Point on the Athens oranch, then to
be continued from Athens on an air¬
line to Stone Mountain, where it will
again touch the present main line aDd
run into Atlanta od it, thus cutting off
a loop from Union Point to Stone
Mountain that will have to be run as a
little local branch road.
The story causes a laugh of incredul¬
ity the to railroad play over people, the for faces they of many there of
could be little distance gained say by
so
this course that it would be folly for
the Georgia railroad to make any such
change.
Others laugh and say if it is even
conceived by the Georgia railroad peo¬
ple it cannot be executed just at this
time, unless the Georgia has stood the
hard times better than most roads.—

REALMS OF STYLE

Clothing Store, Athens.
WHERE LOW PRICES PREVAIL,
And Where Hard Times Did Not Prove
Such a Scare as to Lessen the
Assortment.
The cry of hard times had its effect
in many different ways. It caused
curtailment in expenditures and conse¬
quent curtailment by the merchants of
the stock of goods brought on. In
some instances this latter curtailment
was so great as to cut assortments of
goods down to where every customer
could not be suited from the stock. In
a majority of stores this curtailment
has been made in buying stock for this
fall. It may be good business judg¬
ment to do this; certainly was in many
instances. But with our surroundings
we could not see it that way.
We have brought on the largest and
best selected stock we have ever car
ried. This is saying a great deal we
know for our previous stocks have sel¬
dom been surpassed. We have not
done this in defiance of the conditions
of the country. We made our calcula¬
tions in another way and instead of
cutting our stock and assortments have
determined to cut prices to fit the
times.
We have men’s clothing and fur¬
nishings in endless variety and of the
very latest styles and of all prices for
first-class goods. We defy any house
in Georgia to show a better line of
