Leaves That Crawl.
Among the strange stories told about
the wonderful things to be found in
Australia there is one of crawling
leaves. English sailors firot brought
an account of this phenomenon. They
were roaming along the coast, when a
sudden breeze shook down a number
of leaves, which floated gently to the
ground. The sailers were surprised
at this shower, because it was not the
fall of the year, but midsummer, and
the falling leaves looked fresh and
green. But this was nothing to what
followed. After a short rest these
leaves began crawling along the
ground toward the tree from which
they came. The sailors were too much
frightened to stop and investigate, and
one of the men said, in relating the
adventure, that he expected every
minute to see the trees step out and
dance a hornpipe. Fortunately, other
travelers were not too much frighten¬
ed to stop and examine the matter. It
was discovered that these queer leaves
were really insects, which live upon
the trees, and are of the same color as
the foliage. They have very thin, flat
bodies, and wings shaped like large
leaves. When disturbed by a breeze,
they fold their legs under their bodies,
and then the leaf-like shape, with stem
and all, is complete. Not only are
they bright green in summer, like the
foliage of the trees at that time, but
they actually change like the leaves
do to the dull brown produced by the
frost. Another peculiarity of these
insects is that when shaken to the
ground they seldom use their wings.
After lying there a few minutes, as
though they were really leaves, they
crawl to the tree and ascend the trunk,
without seeming to know that they
have the power to get back to their
quarters in a much easier and quicker
way .—New Orleans Picayune.
Reading and Talking.
Those who read largely are best fit¬
ted to converse well, for they obtain
from books and papers interesting
matter for discussion. As to the man¬
ner, it oan be acquired only by social
mingling with our fellows. A hermit
cannot be expected to be a good con¬
versationalist. Whether in simple talk
or in the higher forms of conversation,
we need to consider the preferences of
others and try to adapt ourselves to
them. A real amiability will lend an
indefinable charm to our speech. Ab¬
ruptness, contradiction, all assumption
of mental superiority, are to be studi¬
ously avoided. Graciousness aad con¬
sideration are requisite for those who
would make themselves helpful and
agreeable. Children should be en¬
couraged not only to listen, but mod¬
estly bear their part in the family talk,
asking questions freely and relating
their daily experiences as older people
do. — Harper's Bazar.
Preserving Ship Timbers.
A novel process is being attempted
at Camden, Me., to preserve the wood
of a new 1,400 ton schooner, now al¬
most ready for launching. All of the
timber of the inside and outside of the
vessel has been soaked in crude petro¬
leum to save it from dry rot by expos¬
ure to the air and to prevent the rav¬
ages of the teredo worm n salt waters.
Even the vessel’s beams Rave been
coated and the tips of the topmasts.
It is expected that the oil will become
so thoroughly soaked in the schooner’s
upper works that the water cannot
penetrate through the wood. Old
wooden vessels which have been con¬
verted into bulk petroleum carriers,
after having outlived their usefulness
in other trades, have been known to
last for years after becoming soaked
with either crude or refined oil.
Taking Russia’s Census iu One Day.
In the autumn of the present year
the census of the whole of Russia will
be taken in one day. For this pur¬
pose a committee, consisting of up¬
ward of 200 persons, has been work
ing more than two years, and the in
structions to the different provinces
will be issued shortly. It is believed
that in twenty provinces there are now
upward of 47,000,000 inhabitants,
whereas when the census was taken in
1860 in the same districts there were
30,000,000. It is supposed that the
greatest increase of population has
taken place in the provinces of Kieff,
Poltava, Kharkoff, Tamboff, Samara
and Viatka and in the towns of Kieff
Kharkoff, Odessa, Baku, Lody and

GENERAL ASSEMBLY
GOV. MITCHELL’S MESSAGE AND
THE TREND THEREOF.
The Sporting Fraternity Come In For
a Good Roasting.
The Florida legislature convened at
12 o’clock Tuesday for its biennial ses¬
sion of sixty days. Hon. Fred Myers,
of the eighth senatorial dtstriot, was
elected president of the senate, and
Hon. W. S. Jennings, of Hernando
county, speaker of the house. The
most important questions to come be¬
fore the legislature will be those re¬
lating to the establishment of a rail¬
road commission, reform of the elec¬
tion law and the relief of the people
from taxation owing to the losses in¬
curred by the freezes.
In the senate, Senator Darby intro¬
duced a bill permitting citizens to set¬
tle their taxes for 1894, 1895 and 1896
by giving certificates of indebtedness
bearing interest at 6 per cent per an¬
num and payable as follows: 1894 cer¬
tificates, three years after date; 1895,
two years, and 1896, one year.
Governor Mitchell’s message was
brief and related almost entirely to
matters of only looal interest. Under
the head of “prize fighting” the gov¬
ernor says:
“During the last year a most dis¬
graceful and brutal fight of this char¬
acter took place in the city of Jack¬
sonville, and parties who resort to
this laudable occupation as a means of
making a living without honest labor
are boasting that there is no law in
this state to prevent such disgraceful
contests, and openly boast that an¬
other one will be ‘pulled off’ at Jack¬
sonville next September. Gentlemen,
you have it m your power to prevent
this by proper legislation. I recom¬
mend that these prize fights or glove
contests be made felonies by statute,
with such penalties attached as will
cause these thugs to respect the law
and to respect the law-abiding, God¬
fearing people of the state in the pur¬
suit of all their rights as citizens. The
law should authorize sheriffs and those
acting in their aid and assistance,
when they have cause to believe that a
prize fight or glove oonteBt is about to
take place, to enter any house or en¬
closure, or any other place wherein
they may have reason to believe
such contest is to take place, for
the purpose of arresting those en¬
gaged or about to engage there¬
in. Also, that all persons who may
be present at such contest, in anywise
aiding or abetting the same, by bet¬
ting thereon or being present thereat,
shall be deemed guilty of a felony, and
upon conviction be punished the same
as the principals.”
Relative to lotteries the governor
says:
“There has been much said in the
newspapers about a lottery located at
Port Tampa, as to the truth of whioh
tim law r SS
lotteries be so amended as to clear
that institution out of thestate.if here,
and to prevent others being located in
the state.”
Governor Mitchell recommends an
appropriation for the Atlanta exposi
tion, saying: “The comptroller rec
ommends that a moderate sum of
mo ney be appropriated to advertise
the state’s resources at the Atlanta
Cotton States and International expo
sition, in which I fully concur.”
The message concludes with a plea
for the most rigid economy.
APPEAL TO THE LEGISLATURE.
Pensacola Officials Want tlie Spanish
Grant Squabble Settled.
The city commissioners of Pensacola
have prepared a memorial, to be sent
to the Florida legislature, wherein
they pray that a law be enacted vest¬
ing title to the Spanish Grant tract in
the provisional municipality of Pensa¬
cola, to be held and used by it for the
benefit of commerce; and that the
said provisional municipality be au¬
thorized and empowered to sell parts
thereof as it may find expedient, sub¬
ject to such conditions as may be
necessary to advance the commerce of
the port without injuring the channel
of the bay and interrupting the navi¬
gation thereof; and to quiet the titles
of those persons who have, in good
faith, expended money in improving
parts of the said tract, upon such
terms as are reasonable and just.
CHEAP COAL IN CLEVELAND.
A Rate Cutting War on Between Mas¬
sillon Coal Operators.
A merry war among the Massillon
coal operators is in progress, and the
consumers at Cleveland, O., are enjoying
the benefitsof very lowprices in conse¬
quence. only retail, but
The fight is not on
on wholesale prices as well. The re¬
tail price of Massillon lump coal, as a
resnlt of the war, has fallen from
§3.50 to §2.35, which is less than it
costs to mine it, shipping and distrib¬
uting it, and the end has apparently
not yet been reached. The result of
the fight is practically the destruction
of the Massillon Operators’ Associa¬
tion, which forced the reduction of the
mining rate to 60 cents from 35 cents
and the abolition of the differential.
Ex-Governor Kemper Dead.
Hon. James L. Kemper, who was the
democratic governor of Virginia from
1872 to 1876, the important period of
its history, died at his home in Orange
county, Va., Saturday night. Thede
ceased had been ill for several years,
and his death was not unexpected.
General Kemper was the , first native
governor elected by Virginia after the
close of the war.

How to Get a Wife.
Austrian matrimonial advertise¬
ments, according to a contemporary
correspondent at Vienna, are marked
by an acceptable humorous audacity.
Here, for instance, is one that ran fpr
six or seven days: “Wanted—A rich
lady—no matter how old—who will
finance a student of medicine until
suoh time as he obtains his degree,
when he engages to marry his benefac¬
tress."
Another is quoted wherein a young
prinoe seeks a handsome girl with a
dowry of not less than $1,000,000.
When the desired mate is obtained all
one’s needs are apparently satisfied,
judging from this advertisement for a
purchaser for “a well-trained monkey,
a talkative parrot and a beautiful,
sympathetic cat,” which belong to a
lady who, owing to her approaching
marriage, has no further use for them.
The most amusing of the advertise¬
ments quoted by our contemporary ia,
however, that of the very Irish peru
quier who makes wigs for “men of in¬
tellect, philosophers, scholars and phy¬
sicians, whose severe mental labor in
the cause of humanity has filled their
brains with genial ideas, while depriv¬
ing their heads of their natural oapil
lary envelopes.” These “artistically
finished wigs,” the advertiser contin¬
ues, “while extremely useful are high¬
ly ornamental, are guaranteed abso¬
lutely invisible to the spectator, Tbey
can be seen any day in my private
show rooms .”—Philadelphia Press.
