INOCULATING THE EARTH.
Farms Are Now to be Fertilized With
Bacteria.
Fertilizing farms by inoculating thorn
with bacteria is an idea which the ex¬
ports of the department of agriculture
ni Washington believe to contain very
large possibilities. The bacteria, of course
are not the disease producing kind with
which people have become more or loss
familiar through their reading during
the past ten or a dozen years, but are
minute organisms and possess the power
of extracting nitrogen from the air and
fixing it so as to make it available for
plant food. After exhaustive experi¬
ments the scientists of the department cultures
have succeeded in making of
the bacteria in large quantities and liberal say
that if congress will give them a
appropriation they will produce the little
“bugs” in commercial or rather agricul¬
tural quantities at an early day. Once
t he process of production has been themselves begun
on any scale the bacteria
will take care of the reproduction, and
at a rate that will assure a permanent
further supply, the only thing required
to bring any dormant colony of bacteria
into action being to feed it with certain
nutrient salts and soak it in water.—Ex.

A scientific ami industrial writer in
the Atlanta Constitution gives this
wholesome advice to young men :
It may be more fascinating for a coun¬
try boy to clerk in a small grocery, take
his hash at a cheap boarding house,
sleep in the back room of the store and
“see the sights” of a city, but it is neith¬
er wholesome nor profitable. Keep on
the farm, young man, study it b wants
and its possibilities, and you will be ten
times better off than in the city. Men
of moderate means may put up margins
but they are apt to put up mortgages in
the end. Only the very rich can afford
to gamble in stocks. Buy land and hold
it. It is there. Don’t let your health
and morals go into bankruptcy in the
glare and glamor of the city. Get into
the open ; breathe deep the pure air and
tlmnk God you are in the sunlight. Live
on your own land ; treat it fairly ; it will
respond liberally and make you rich in
heart, mind, body and pocket. Never
was a more encouraging time to go to
farming than just now : the farm yields
a larger profit for capital invested and
labor expended than any other occupa¬
tion.
