The Oglethorpe Echo
Oglethorpe County???s housing
situation is expanding.
SRE Homes LLC, the develop
er of Mill Creek Meadows, a new
subdivision on Arnoldsville Road,
is ready to begin building homes.
The complex on Arnoldsville
Road will have five houses,
Oglethorpe County Code Compli
ance Officer Jeff Sharp said. The
development includes 20 acres,
though each house may not re
ceive the same amount of space.
???Each lot is a minimum of an
acre and a half,??? he said. ???Some
are bigger, though.???
Adam Swann, an agent for SRE
Homes LLC, said the developers
haven???t decided on a price point
for the houses.
He also couldn???t provide a
timeline for when the houses
would be complete, and he didn???t
say when the homes would come
on the market.
???To be honest, we haven???t set
tled on a price yet,??? Swann said.
???That???s a question for us going
forward.???
The Oglethorpe County Board
of Commissioners approved the
subdivision during its meeting on
July 11,2022.

A driver hauling a tractor behind a pickup truck almost
made it unscathed through the covered bridge at Watson
Mill Bridge State Park last Wednesday. He entered the
covered bridge from the Madison County side of the river,
traveled through the length of it before he hit the 9-foot
beam that marks the maximum height of loads as he left
on the Oglethorpe County side. County Commission Chair
Jay Paul said he cleared the beam entering the bridge and
didn't hit any of the bridge supports. The beam with a sign
stating "Clearance 9'" is visible while lodged in the trac
tor in the photo. Watson Mill Bridge is the longest covered
bridge in Georgia, spanning 229 feet. It also has a three-ton
weight limit, according to its website.
Friends, family and fellow citizens, I would like to announce my candidacy for
Oglethorpe County Sheriff in 2024.
I would like to introduce myself; my name is James Jackson, and I am known by many
as ???Junior.??? I am the current Coroner and the former 911 Director. I have been serving
the citizens of Oglethorpe County since 1996 when I became a ???Junior Firefighter.??? I
later became an Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate and began working full
time for Oglethorpe County EMS in 2002, and still currently hold an Advanced Emer
gency Medical Technician license. In 2005,1 was given the wonderful opportunity to
become a Deputy Sheriff for Oglethorpe County, and since that time, I have served as
a Patrol Deputy, Reserve Deputy, Investigator, Sergeant, Captain and 911 Director.
I have been a resident of Oglethorpe County all my life with only a brief period, when
I was young, living outside of the county. My wife, Angela, and I reside in the Beaver-
dam community and have been married for 22 years. Both of our families have strong
ties to the county, mine in the Smithonia community and hers in the Beaverdam com
munity. Angela worked for Dr. Tumlin until his retirement and then for Dr. Morris,
totaling 16 years. She is now a 911 Director at an agency that she has worked with for
six years.
I am aware of the challenges unique to Oglethorpe County when it comes to law
enforcement and public safety through my years of service. I look forward to collab
orating with you to address these challenges so that we can create a great relationship
through public trust, public safety and public service.
To me, the position of sheriff is not merely a title or achievement. It is an absolute
honor and privilege, as well as a promise to protect and serve the citizens of Oglethor
pe County. I will work tirelessly with, and for the community, to provide a safe place to
live, work and raise a family.
I would appreciate your support, thoughts and prayers as we move forward. I look
forward to meeting you personally and asking you for your vote, as well as answering
any questions that you may have.
