A Good llotki..— Mr. John Tumor
hcufs the only public house in Ilam
jlion, anil it is a good ono. Wc
dint'd there a day or two ago, nnd a
more rangnifficeut dinner is hard to
got up than was collated that day-
This can he accounted Cor from the
fact that the table is superintended
by his accomplished daughters, whe
see that every thing is nice and in
good order.

Head Tuts, llkedTiiis. —Our en

ble k Copeland, arc agents for the
Georgia Grange fertilizers, which
bears a high recommeneation, and
they give the bemfit of the cotton
option at 15e per ponnd. Those
who wish those splendid fertilizers
will do well to make arrangements
with these gentlemen at once for a
supply. also keep a full lino of
groceries, shelf goods, dry goods, no

sell at very low rates for cash.
Removal Messrs. Talley &
Tiuett have removed their s f ock of
goods from the ‘ brick store’’ to the
“corner store” occupied by .Mr. J.
W. Storey last year, where they pro
pose to keep a well assorted slock of
fine whiskeys, wines, cigars, tobacco,
etc., etc.' They also bare groceries,
and a splendid assortment of shelf
goods, \i liicli can be bought at the
lowest rates. Mr. Tniett has ofrrpge
of the establishment, and has made
warm friends and customers by bis
urbanity and attention t<> tno-e who
visit his store. Gall 011 them when
you come to town.

Death of a Good Citizen. —E-q.
Sterling Jenkins died at bis residence
in Muscogee county, near Bethel
church, last Friday, and was burieu
with Masonio honors by tbe Kim
brough Lodge last Saturday. Mr.
Jenkins was in his sixty-fourth year,
and in his death, his community auo
tbe country at large looses a most
estimable citizen. We have had an
intimate acquaintance with bis family
for several years past, and knew him
to be a man of large hospitality, gen
erous to his neighbors, charitable to
ihe needy, and always a friend to tbe
oppressed. Mr. T. 11. Kimbrough,
ot Catania, was his son-iu-hnv. lie
leaves a widow, two daughters and
lour sons to mourn his loss, to whom
we exetnd our sinceic sympathy in
tli is sad hour of their bereavement.

AS CAL’OUT OK TIIE I'ffV.
-• He went op in a balloon hoys,
up in a balloon.
—Sunday morning was so damp
and rainv that none of the Sabbath
Schools held service.
What about the debating ■ocie
ty? It will never do to give it up,
so let there be a full attendance
to-night.
—We regret to lear that Ztntiy
Copeland is quite siok, Ho has been
sent out to his fathers, and was get
ting hotter yestcr-day.
—Some ot the young ladios were
so much interested in the balloon as
cension last Tuesday forgot
to eat dinner.
—lt fills the heart with throbs of
sympathy to sco a young lady in tears
when she is nfiaid the snake will
bite her sweet-heart.
—That “Circle” business is still a
littie wruped in mystery, but is de
veloping. The t ulette has come and
the next thing in order is tb edrttgyist.
(this is yours.)
—The friends of Mr. Win. Griggs,
formerly of Hamilton, will be glad to
know that he has a position in the
Comptroller's Office, in Atlanta,
which pays him a good salary.
—Children arc good things, under
some circumstances, and one of those
circumstances is when there is a show
on hand and it becomes necessary for
the old folk to go along to take care
of them.
—Well there is something in that,
as the fellow said when he tried to
put on his boot with a kitten in it,
but bad roads will not last always,
and then he will come, “don’t you
forget it.”
—Mr. 0. 0. Johnson, of N. Y.
is spending this week in town. He
is looking remarkub'y well for a matt
of his age, and seems to enjoy life as
much as when a b >y. Wc are glad
to have Johnson among us and hope
his stay w ill be pleasant.
—The County Commissioners havo
levied a tax of five-hundred dollars
on the State tax, which will be ap
propriated to fixing up the Conn
house, and they will have it in read
iness for the April t'd'in of the Court.
They could not exspend five-hun
dred dollars to a better purpose.
—A gen item in fi'O-m Catania, who
by the way is a church nvoniber, tried
‘lns band at “litre* card monte’* with
the showmen lost Tuesday, and got
five dollars worth of experience and
10-t that much money. Another
gentleman exchanged thirty dollars,
and another seventy in the same way.
—The colored people will organ
ize their Sabbath School next Sunday
evening. This a good idea and i*
yery commendable in the leaders of I
the noble work. It may keep the j
children from contracting many bad j
habits, which in all, probability, !
would end in erime.
—Judge Henry Ch' Kimbrough is
numbered among the warm friends
of the JotJitNAi,. He not only reads
it himself, but subscribes and pays
tor five coppies beside his own.
With many such friends, running a
newspaper would be an easy task,
but we have no room to complain as
our subscription list r.asbeen doubled
within the past year.
—One of the “trundle-bed’’ squad
wants to know bow to court his
girl—whether he must come out fl >t
footea or not. As we have had no
experience in that particular line, we
feel a delicacy in advising in such a
serious matter; but in the mean time
refer him to Charley Parker.
—The “little folk,” so to speak,
had an entertainment at the residence
of Mr. J. T. Johnson last Friday
night, and an enjoyable occasion
they made of it. They are far ahead
of the “grown up” folk, when it
comes to seeing fnrt, and we don’t
know bnt it would be a good idea
if some of their spirit could be infused
into the more dignified and sedate.
—Mr. W. A. Swift, tho proprietor
of the Centennial Stores and Wagon
Yard, is agent at Columbus, for
Wharm's Kaw Bone Super-Phos
phate. He is the right kind of a man
and will sell nothing bnt a good arti
cle. Mr. Swift is a young man bnt
lias already attained tho name of a
, reliable trust-worthy merchant, and
j will treat his customers fairly, liead
! his card and give him a call.
—A disturbance occured in Ham
ilton last Tuesday .which came very
near resulting seriously. We did
not learn bow the difficulty, origina
ted bnt heard that a negro man made
an attempt to cut a young Air. Har
ris with a knife, when ho drew a pistol
and fired at hirn, The ball struct
the store house of Cowsert & Kim
brough, passed through the wall and
missed Mr. Den. Kimbrough's head
not in< re than six inches.
That Traveling Humbug.
■■■■ . m
A largo crowd of people assembled
in Hamilton last Tuesday to witness
the balloon ascension of Mens. Ij
Piorre, n'ias H. F. Johnson. On ac
count of the balloon being out of or
der, it was sundown before the bogus
Frenchman was ready, nnd then he
went up about two hunhred feet nnd
landed about one-fourth of a mile
from the starting point. The crowd
strolled around like they foil out of
place, gazing at everything and every
body and occasionally some ono
would take a nibble at a bait set by
lies e swindlers.
Of all shows, or rather pretended
shows, that it has oyer been our
misfortune to witness, Hodman's is
of the lowest order and the foulest
humbug. They used every conceiv
able deviee to cheat and swindle the
people, and we regret to say suc
ceeded to soino extent. Several of
our Lest citizjns wero beguiled into
risking their money at “three card
monte,”and as a natural consequence,
the swindlers pocketed it.
Inside the canvass was a woman
witn false whiskers, a parrot that
couldn’t talk, a performing monkey
and an educated hog who ought to
feel disgraced to be seen in such
company, Edie Zelicquc, the Cereas
sian girl who fondled a huge snake
around her neck, and Punch and Ju
dy who give nn entertainment in such
poor stylo that it hardly brought out
a laugh.
Some of our most respectable citi
zens in the county visited tins show,
and all concur that they are set as
grand humbugs and swindlers as ever
infested this section.
Tiie Sabbath Schools. — Now that
the first btuls of spring are begin
ning to make their appearance, and
the cold, drcaiv winter is hastening
away into tho dream of things that
were, let all the children, and grown
people to >, turn out to the Sabbath
Schools, and go with tho determina
tion of being regular in attendance,
and careful in reviewing the lessons.
Hamilton can affird two interesting
schools, and there is nothing in
which they can engage so profitable
as in studying tlie scripture. P.ml
says: “Search the Scriptures for in
them ye think ye have eternal fife.’’

Fnitr/zaEs.—Messrs. Pearce, Bin

A Sons’ Super-phosidiato of Lime,
and are offering it as low as any
standard fertilizer. They bare been
agents for this well known and re

a large number of flattering testimo

best and most reliable in the pour it ry,
