Edison's Electric Bight.
A New York dispatch says: "The
great demand for shares in the Edi
son Electric Light Company con
tinues, and the extraordmay price
at which the shares are soiling as
tonishes every ono. The history
of speculation in this country prob
ably Inrnishers no parallel for the
remarkable rise in the speculative
value of tb® stock. Tho fact that
there are plenty of capitalists that
are willing to venturo many hou~
saads of dollars upon the success of
the Edison system, shews conclu
sively that they have tho fullest
tailh that Edison has finally Rolved
the problem of electric illumination.
If the lucky holders of the stock do
not share this confidence,, they at
least fed sure that the pub’io luroro
will continue until they have dis
posed of all their stock at princely
figures. They don’t seem to care
whether they sell or not, and they
refuse to transfer a particle of the
stock fur less than $5,000 a share.
One of tho largest stockholders was
offered to-day SBOO,OOO cash for two
hundred shares. He declined the
offer, and sßys ho will not sell un
der $1,000,000. This stock, for
wliion he demands a fortune, cost
him, twelve months ago, s<!,fioo, or
$33 a share. Several small lota of
the shares were sold to-day for $5,
000 a share. A good many inves .
tors are picking them up in five and
ten share lots. There are only 3,000
shares altogether.
‘‘Mr. Edison is making a bedroom
lamp. This will take throe horse
shoe pieces of chaired paper within
its globe, and there will be an appa..
iulus by which the pleclric current
cau be sent through any one ot them
at will. One ot them will furnish
as much light as an ordinary lamp,
but the other two will furnish less.
There is also in process of construc
tion a cylindrical shade, winch, on
befhjfflnwLA over the bin j\ may bo
raised or lowered, so as to regulate
ths degree of light. Edison is .now
experimenting on a lamp which
gives about five intie* as min i) light
as a gas jet, nr one of his ordinary
lamps. In this lamp the loop of
charred paper isAhorter. The grass
resistance at any particular point re
mains the same. The result is that
a greater amount of electricity is
driven through the strip of charcoal,
and the strip in healed to an inten
sity that the eye can hardly bear.
