HAMILTON, HARRIS COUNTY, GEORGIA, MARCH 18, 1880.
Georgia News and Notes.
—Macon is to huvo anew opera
house.
—The Atlanta Constitution is
without an equal as a newspaper.
The very paper it is printed on is
superior to that of auv other daily
we know.
—The Sand pear is ettll a favorite
South Georgia. A number of per
sons in Talbot county, have tailed
in their efforts to propogate it.
—Gene Granberry has found a
six pound rat story. But Gene
dosen’t think that this is any great
feat as he has done harder things.
—Work has not commenced on
the Talbotton branch railroad yet.
Only the preliminary public meet
ings are being indulged in now.
—All of Gene Granber ry’s stories
are entirely ratdoual. Some of thorn
six pounders. 4
Atlanta in her every, desires a
canal or a river *o keep abreast’ o f
Sivannah and Augusta ahd to see
Paul Boynton swim.
—Augusta News: Sharpers are
traverliug -long the Alabama,
Georgia and Florida border, pre
tending to sell machinery. They
get a man to sign a blank ordering
certain kinds of machinery. The
next thing the farmer hears of the
machinery is a note presented to
him, for say one hundred and fifty
dollars, written on the blank above
his signature. This fraud seems to
be popular with sharpers all over
the country.
—The Georgia Baptist conven
lion, representing 2,603 churches
and 219,728 members meets in Sa
vannuh on April 22d. It has been
almost a quarter of a century since
tbe convention met in Savannah,
Railroads have agreed to pass dole*
gates at half fare. On tbe 26th the
merchants have arranged to furnish
the convention a free excursion to
Tybee. This convention was organ,
ized at Powellon in 1821. Rev.
Jesse MLrcer was tbe first modera
tor, and was annually elected to tbe
office until 1840, the year of Ins
death. Since then the moderators
have been as follows: Rev. B. Nl.
Sanders, first president of Mercer
university, for six years; Hon.
Thomas Slocks, for ten years/ Dr.
P. 11. Mell, for seventeen years:
and lion. D. D. Butler, for four
years. Dr. Mell is now ttie moder
ator.
—Macon Telegraph: Under the
stimulus of enlarged acreage, un
precedented guano sale and high
prices, with ordiary season, such a
crop will be produced the present
year as the world never saw. We
should not be surprised to see it
reach six and ahalf millions of bales,
or even more. The increase, too,
will be at the cost of diminished
breadstuff, meat supplies, and the
small crops which contribute so
much to the real independence and
comfort of the farmer. Nor will
Tiis profit, granting that a full crop
is gathered, by any means come up
to his expectation. In the first
place, taking Alarshallville as a
guide, over one-fourth of the cotton
raised must be handed over to the
guano dealers, even if the crop is an
average one. It the worm, drought
storms or early frosts, contract the
yield, so much the worse off will
the farmer be. 2 Labor, mules and
plantation implements are from
twenty-five to thirty p“r cent high.,
er than last year. 3 Gorn, (of
which immense supplies must be
purchshcd), and bacon, have ad
vanced 25 per cent; and, 4th. It is
eveident. from the tremendous trade
of the winter and early spring, that
our farmers have had tiieir heads
turned by the rise in cotton- and
are disposed to go back to their old
habits of extravagance. While it is
still time, t herefore, we call upon
them to look out for “breakers
ahead,’’ reef sails, cast out bow and
stern anchors, and resolve to t ide
out the coming storm under “bare
poles.”
—ln Georgia there are to-day
213,157 cotton spindles in opera
tion, and of them Columbus boasts
of 60,000. The Eagle and Phoenix
Mills of the city alone operate
44,000, which arc about 20,000
more than are operated by any
other one factory in the State. 1
