a young man living near H 'llonville
in Pike county, committed suicide
last week by taking morphino. A
short time previous to his death, an
old negro woman, noi icing some
thing singular in his action-, asked
him what was the matter. He re
plied that be bad been taking some
medicine* She asked him what.
He replied, “A dose of quinine or
strychnine, I don’t know which.’’
She then said, “Ain’t yov afraid yon
will kill yonr-eli? 1 ’ He responded
carelessly, ‘ I don’t care if I do.”
But a little while af erwards he was
dead. It will be remembered by
many of our readers (bat the de
cea-ed in 1807 was convicted of as.
sault with intent to rape, and sen
tenced to tbe penitentiary. A
strong petition was sent up to Gov
ernor Colquitt to pardon him, for
the reason that Johnson was nearly
