HAMILTON, HARRIS COUNTY, GEORGIA, APRIL 15, 1880.
Be Warned in Time.
The followin'.' editorial, copied
from iho Nutv York Sun should he
considered well by every one of our
renders. As the South suffered
most by the recent panic, nn i I
she be the heaviest sufferer should
we have another which is inevitable
if there is not a change in the pres
ent condi ion of affairs as regards inn,
port? and exports. The individu
al whose purchases exceed his in
come is doomed to bankruptcy
whosewithout a change. Sothe coun
try imports exceed its exports is
fnstening to bankruptcy. The larger
the excess the quicker the tune.
This reaction is so sudden and so
unexpected that the crash may come
ere another cotton crop is made and
disposed of. If we h da ay guar
antee that the price of cotton
would remain at pivseut figures, ii
is as prothabie as any crop our far
mers can raise. Hut with a panic
threatening in the not distant tiium
we hope they will ho warned in time
“A few months ago. when tlm ex
ports exceeded all former experi
ence, owing to the short
ciops in Europe, and the imports
were comparatively limited, the bal
ance of trade m our favor was the
daily staple of self-satisfied com
ment. It, is said to be a bad rules
lhat will not woik botn ways. The
tide has turned now. and the im
ports have recemly doubled the ex
ports. Ad of a sudden not a word
is lisped about the balance of trude
going the other way.
Let us hope th t the abnormal
demand for our breadstuff- may noi
turn out 1 1 i. e the indemnity which
Fiance paid to Germany, and be
come a greater evil than a blessing.
It is ofien more difficult to endure
prosperity than adversity. The les
sons of the last, five hard years of
suffering and privation seem already
to have been forgotten in the gen
eral ru-h for speculation and ex
travagance and slock gambling.
Agl nee at the imported luxu
ries and at the appealiing aggregate
of the importation-, f.tr beyond tin
needs ol the people and ail former
comparison, is enough to excite
alarm in the minds ol all thinking
men. The revenue surpasses tx
peotation. On a single day last
week iho customs yield' and nearly a
million and a quarter of dollars. S>
during the height of the civil war,
wiih t.v elve millions of consumers
cut, off, the receipts front CU-tollls
almost doubled those of 1860 and
18li0.
And we are paying the penalty
of that reckless prodigality now, in
a debt w lin-h taxes every man, wo
man, and child in the United Stales,
while, black, or mixed, more than
two dollars a year to meet the in
terest thereon clone! The country
is beginning to revive from its pros
tration. Tito machinery of enter -
prise is again in active motion. Con
fidence has replaced depression.
There is every promise of a bright
future, with common prudence to
guide.our footsteps. But perm: -
runt prosperity is not to be assured
by wild extravagance. The pa
tient who is getting out from a long
and dangerous illness cannot indulge
with sately in riotous living. Are
turn to fuij health and vigoi can on
ly he attained by helping nature in
the work of rest oral ion.”
