His Exact Age.
When Uncle Reuben Clay, an old dar
key of about seventy winters, dropped
into a Detroit tobacco store, and was
asked his age, ho promptly replied:
“Wall, soli, I reckon I’ze about na
nigh 70 y’ars ole as dey can make ’em. ”
“If yop can’t read, or write or cipher
how can you tell?”
“I’ze kept de dates in my head, sail,
an’ if you’ll take a pencil I kin prove my
age in no time ’tall.”
One of the loungers prepared himself
with pencil and paper, and Uncle Reuben
proceeded:
“ Now, sah, in what y'ar did Columbus
diskiver America?”
“In 1492."
“Den sot dat down.”
“ Why, what has the discoverer of
America to do with your age?” asked sev
eral voices.
“It makes no diffunco, sah. I’ze got
to git some pint to reckon from, an’ I
take dat one kaae it’s de handiest. Put
down 1192.”
“Yes.”
“Now, den, when was derevolusliunary
wa’ fit?”
“In 1776."
“ Exactly. Take dat from 1492 and it
leaves liow many!”
“Just 284 years.”
“ Dat’s k’rect. Now when did dey
fight de next wa’?”
“In 1812-14. Take that out and it
makes a difference of thirty-six years,
and reduces the figures to 248.”
“ Dat's all light,” said Uncle Reuben
as he bent over the figures. “ Now. den,
in what y’ar did my great-grandfather
land in ole Virginny?”
“Why, liow do I know? You must
know if any one.”
The old man scratched his head, lboked
over the figures and said:
“Dat’s kinder curus. De ole man
comes in dar some wliar?”
All the men began to laugh at him,
and the old man got up and tied on his
comforter and said:
‘ • You white folks needn't feel so mighty

Trees and Rain.
The countries of Sardinia and Sicily,
once the granaries of Italy, have suffered
the penalty of their thoughtlessness in
exterminating their forests. Two thou
sand years ago these lands were cele
brated for their wonderful productive
ness, and were said to be the most
beautiful in the world. In 1800 Hum
bolt visited Venezuela, and was informed
by the natives living in Araguay that
they had noticed, with great astonish
ment, that a lake which lay in the mid
dle of the valley had decreased in volume
every year: the cause clearly traced to
the falling of a great number of trees
which grew on the surrounding mount
ains. In Hungary periodical droughts
are universally attributed to the annihi
lation of the forests. In Cairo, Lower
Egypt, a great many years ago, rain fell
but seldom—only once in three or four
years—but since "the time of Mohammed
Ali thirty or more million of trees have
been set or planted, and the result is now
that the country has from thirty to forty
rainy days in every year. When New
England and the heavily timbered States
of the Union were first settled the rain
fall was greatly in excess of what it is
since so much of the land has been
cleared up.
St. Vitus’ Dance.
This disease is sometimes described as
“insanity of the muscles.” In its worst
form it is very distressing, and often
fatal.
At first there may be only a twitching
of the eyelids, or the muscles of the face;
but at length, for days together, or until
the person, utterly worn out, is relieved
by death, the limbs are fearfully con
vulsed, being dashed perhaps against
the bedpost with tremendous force; or
the body is suddenly forced upwards to
its extremest tension, and as suddenly
thrown in the opposite direction ; or the
head is rolled from side to side inces
santly. A strong linen bed covering will
be completely destroyed by the violent
movements in a single day. The body
becomes bruised and excoriated from
head to foot.
It most frequently attacks children of
from ten to fifteen years of age. Says
William Smith Esq., Fellow of the
Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society,
London, “ I consider the disease one of
increased nervous action, deriving its
source directly from too much stimula
tion of the nervous system and the brain
especially. ”
. During childhood the great object
aimed at by nature to overcome the dis
ease is nutrition and growth. Play, pure
air, good food, and freedom from mental
excitement, are what the child should
have at the expense of everything else.
In case a child shows incipient chorea,
let all attempts to excite its intellect or
its sensibilities be wholly avoided. Se
cure, without fail, the normal activity of
the stomach and bowels. Sponge the
body daily with cold water, for its gen
eral tonic effect. Bathe the feet with
warm water every night before retiring,
for its quieting effect. Guard constantly
against all frights. Shun wines, beers,
and every form of spirits.— Youth’s Com
panion.

Elephants nml Tigers In South Africa
The district of Uitenliage is just now
rather overrun with wild animals of the
larger kind, and an hour’s ride from the
town would bring sportsmen into the
haunts of elephants and tigers. On
Monday morning, as Mr. Fourie, of
Wolvekop, was coming into town, he
pnssed through a large herd of elephants
at the Coega. Gen. Nixon’s estate, Bal
moral, seven miles from town, is actually
overrun with the huge animals; and they
have become very troublesome on the
general's farm, Doom Kraal, occupied
by Col. Asliburner, tearing down the
fences, destroying the crops, and scatter
ing even the prickly pears in all direc
tions. The place is about eight miles
from Uitenliage. The farm, Kamachs,
which adjoins Uitenliage, and may be
reached in twenty minutes, is just now
subject to great destruction from porcu
pines, bush bucks, and tigers.
On Sunday aftemotm last "Mr. Harry
Marshall, of her majesty’s customs, nar
rowly escaped an encounter with a tiger.
He was spending the day with Mr. Clarke
at the farm Kamachs, and in the after
noon went for a quiet ••troll, gun in
hand, along the kloof to the favorite
picnic spot near the dam, and suddenly
came upon a tiger drinking at the stream.
He impulsively leveled thy gun at the
beast and pulled the trigger, but the cap
missed tire. The animal then, with a
snarl, ascended the celebrated wild fig
tree, the bark of which is scored all over
with the names of pleasure-seekers who
have from time to time visited the spot.
Mr. Marshall attempted a second time to
fire, with no better result than at first.
It then occurred to him that it might
possibly be fortunate for him that his
gun refused fire, for had he wounded the
brute it certainly would have attacked
him.
Mr. Clarke’s ostrich camps have been
greatly disturbed lately by tigers, the
spoors of which have been found in the
camp, and on one occasion the tiger’s
hair found on the claw of a bird indicated
an encounter, in which the ostrich came
off victor. A grand hunt upon the farm
will shortly take place, at which some
exciting sport may be expected. The
danger that Mr. Marshall escaped may
be guessed by those who remember the
crouching and scratching that Mr. Hay
ward, of Great Wiuterbrook, received
some years ago from a wounded tiger.
The brute had been caught in a trap,
and sprung at Mr. Hayward as he ap
proached, literally biting his wrist
through and scalping him. Mr. Mar
shall’s animal has not yet been captured,
although parties have been on the look
out for him ever since. Uitcnhayc

Making a Dog Drunk.
As an evidence that whisky is an in
fallible antidote against poison, we will
state that Mr. J. W. Jackson, while out
on the prairie some few days ago with
his fine-blooded hunting dogs, had one
of them bitten by an enormous mocca
sin snake. The reptile fastened his
fangs on the edge of the dog’s tongue,
from which a perfect stream of blood is
sued. Such was the force of the virus
that the wound inflicted became instantly
black, and the dog’s tongue and lower
jaw had commenced swelling rapidly
and alarmingly. The owner, having
with him a flask of whisky, lost no time
in pouring down the animal’s throat
about one-half of it. As soon as the
whisky taok effect the dog lay stretched
out as if dead, but he was only drunk,
as he soon revived from his stupor and
.was seemingly as well as ever. The
place struck by the snake rotted and fell
out. — &t. Landry {La.) Democrat.
The Boston Transcript says that

ism, or words'to that effect. We think
