Not On Good Terms.
“Did yon know that the Simpkinses
and I weren’t on good terms ?” said Col
onel Solon, as he dropped into the edi
torial chair of the Oil City Derrick, like
a bag of bran out of a wagon.
“No; what’s the trouble?”
I know zactly. Yer see.
the other night mc'n my wife war invited
out to a party at Deckin Todd’s an’ we
went, caz I knew that the Deckin didn’t
scrimp on eatables a bit, an' allors had
Ruthing in a jug down cellar. Well,
when we got there the house was mighty
nigh filled,’an’ every one was talking
kind o’ loose like, an’ a complimenting
each other in various ways. Everything
slid along as smoothly as a chunk of
butter on a hot knife ’till, long arter sup
per time, Mr. Simpkiu, sez ho to my
wife, sez he, ‘ Mrs. Solon, yer looks
’bout as nigh as young as yer did ten
years ago;’ an’ my wife, sez she, ‘ Yer a
flatterin’ me, Mr. Simpkiu,’ coz my wife
she knows what to say, she does. An’ I
warn’t goin’ to be outdone in perliteness,
an’ I seed Mrs. Simpkiu t’other side of
the room, and so I sings out, ‘ Hi, Mrs.
Simpkiu, land o’ Goshen, but that air
wig I saw yer buyin’ t’other day makes
yer look as pert as a sixteen-year-old
gal; when yer git yer false teeth we
won’t know yer from yer darter.’ An’
then I smiled pleasantly like, but, sakes
alive! that air room was just as still as a
hav-mow for about two minutes, an’ Mrs.
Simpkiu looked like she wanted to kick
somebody, an’ my wife, sez she, * Solo
mon, Solomon,’ jest as if I’d sot down on
the baby or broke a lookin’-glass. The
people didn’t seem to breathe easy for a
long time, an’ bumby we kem away, an’
my wife sez she, ‘ Solomon Solon, some
men are made fools, an’ some men are
born fools.’ An’sez I, ‘ Sally, that’s so;’
but I do not know for the life o’ me who
she was thinking on, unless ’tw T as tha*
nat’ral fool of Todd’s.”
Kate Dashiele, a Baltimore public
charge all her life, has just been buried
from Bayview Asylum, where lier mother
left her, two years old, during the cholera
epidemic of 1832. Kate never spoke,
smiled, nor moved during all these years,
but had to be fed and tended like a baby.
She ceased growing when she was six
old, though her head was unusually
arge, and she used to sit all day rocking
herself in a little chair made especially
for her. ______________

Ancient Form of Dress.
How did we come to possess our pres
ent form of dress? This is one of the
many questions answered by a reviewer
in the Nature. Clothing at first was al
most entirely ornamental. The excep
tions were such articles as belts from
which instruments of various kinds could
be suspended so as to be ready for use
while the hands were left free. A savago
does not enjoy the lfixury of a pocket.
Even at the present day a Japanese has
to sling his tobacco pipe and pouch from
his belt, and the only pockets he has are
in his sleeves. The simple cincture was
the germ, so to speak, of the clothing we
wear. After somo time a bunch of pnn
danus slips was added in front, and this
was gradually extended until it made a
complete fringe around the body. When
the arts became so far advanced that
man could make paper cloth or some
woven material these latter were substi
tuted for the primitive fringe, and the
kilt was thus developed. Curiously
enough, the dress of the Scottish High
landers embodies these two stages of
progress in the kilt and the sporran. As
man advanced there were inconveniences
attending the use of the kilt, which were
abated by fastening that garment at one
point between the legs, and the human
mind was then fairly sot upon the path
to arrive at the attainment of a pair of
trousers. When the back and shoulders
needed protection the savage used the
skin of some animal, and it is from this
sort of covering for the upper part of the
body that we have derived our coats,
vests, shirts, Ac. But the ancient cloak
form is even yet retained, not only by
such people as Zulu chiefs, but in all
robes of ceremony by dignitaries of Court
and college of the most highly civilized,
nations on the face of the earth. The
elaborate and varied head coverings of
the present day all sprang from a very
simple original type.

Kidney Complaints.
DISEASE OF THE KIDNEYS.
The symptom* of an acute attack of inflammation of the
kidneys' are as follows: Fever, pain in the small of the
back, and thence shooting downward; numbness of the
thigh, vomiting, usually at first a deep red color of the
urine, which becomes pate and colorless as the disease
increases, and is discharged very often with pain and
difficulty; costiveness and some degree of colic. In
chronic diseases ofthe kidneys the symptoms are pain in
the back and limbs, dryness of the skin, frequent urina
tion (especially at night), general dropsy, headache,
dizziness of sight, indigestion, and palpitation of the
heart, gradual loss of strength, paleness and pufflness of
.he face, cough, and shortness of breath.
In diseases of the kidneys the V eoktisb gives im
mediate relief. It has never failed to cure when it is
taken regularly and direction* followed. In many cases
it mav take several bottles, especially cases of long
standing. It acts directly upon the secretions, cleansing
and strengthening, removing all obstructions and im
purities. A great many can testify to cases of long stand
ing having been perfectly cured by the Veoktisk, even
after trying many of the known remedies which are said
to be expressly for this disease.
