Fire at Waverly Hall.
last Saturday the residence of Maj. Geo.
L. Kilpatrick, Waverly Hall, was discover
ed to be on fire. Ih j disooveiy was made
too late to stay the progress of the Haines,
and all the efiorls of the members of the
household and of the neighbors attracted by
the fire alarm were devoted to saving the
furniture and preventing the spread of the
fire. Ouly the furniture of one room was
saved. The fire spread to the smoke house
and two adjacent dairies which were entire
ly consumed.
The bouse was a two storied, seven room
structure aad well furnished. The loss is
not less than $2,000 and is covered by no
insurance. The fire is supposed to have
originated in an ell of the house, in a bed
room occupied by two young men and two
juegro boys. The negro boys had pallets
upon a piece of bagging,.which they rolled
up each morning, and put away in a corner
of the room; and it is supposed that a spark
of fire was rolled up in the bagging Satur
day morning and that the fire was commu
nicated to the house front this roll of big

A Narrow Escape.
Last Sunday evening a little girl who had
been sent on n errand to Kev. 8 T. Ful
ler’s discovered his dwelling to be on fire.
She gave the alarm, when Dr. T. S. M toh
ell and his two bods, .las. W. and Cooper
repaired to the house, and by exollent man
agement extinguished the flames before
tbey had obtained much headway. Mr.
Fuller ami fsrnly had been from home du
ring the day ana but for the timely dis
covery of the little girl, they would have
found their home in ashes upon their re
turn. As it was the escape was a narrow
one, the fire having burned a large bole in
the middle of the floor. Mr. F. says he
ccverei up the fire in the fire place very
caiefully before leaving home, but the fire
may have origi Dated from a spark at the
time concealed in a cotton rng before tha
fire place. The fire was making rapid pro
giess when discovered and the entire build
ing woul 1 have been in flumes in a few
minutes, but for the very timely disoovery
aad the prompt action of Messrs Mitohail.
