The Literary Revolution.
||* - * ar* won every day. In Jamary, 1870, “The Literary Revolution” was inaugurated by the publi-
U[f*yni IPQ cation of one small volume. At urgent, its list, publLslicd and in preparation, comprises nearly
IIU lUe luJ 175 volumes of standard books. It gives employment to about 500 hands, and now has facilities
for delivering to purchasers over five ton -of InmiLh :i dav. To moot the popular demand for the coming twelve
months at least 2,000,000 and probably 3 f COO f COO volumes will bo required. The almost wonderful suc
cess which the “ Revolution” has achieved is, doubtless, to be attributed to it* leading principles, which are :
I. Publish only books of real merit.
11. What is worth reading is worth preserving— TT booled aro neatly and strongly hound.
111. Work on the bash* of the present cost of making books, which is vciy imich loss than it was a few years
ago.
IV. Books have commonly been considered luxuries; in a free republic they ought to be considered necessi
ties, and the masses will buy good books t y the million if prices are placed within their reach.
V. T< make $1 and a friend is letter than t-> make s:> on'y, and 1000 hooks sold at a profit of $1 each give a.
profit of only SIOOO, while 1,000,000 books sold at a protit of 1 cent each give a profit of $10,000; and it is iuor
pleasure as Well as more profit to sell the million.
