day, I have oomluded to furnish you with
a few items which have long since become
a part of the history of our county. The
writer olaims no credit for this article, as
it is merely an < xtrant compiled from the
records, but be hopes that it may be in
structive to the young men of {the county

—Harris oonuty was laid out from Troup I
aud ilusc gee iu 1827. Its length is twen- l
ty miles; breadth 18 miles, aud contains
about 3(10 square m les.
—Among the (list settlers of this oonuty
were—Anderson Redding, T. Jones, W. 0.
Osborn, A. Johnson, Joseph D .vis, E. D.
Hines, Thus. Hall, b. Johnson, Aaron,
Goodman S. Hnev, James R-icns-y, Judge
Walborn, R Mobley, Nathaniel 11. Harden,
William said Thomas Whitehead, Lewis
Wynn. J. J. Harper, T. L. Jackson, Jack

We find that the first Bupenor Court was
held March, 1828. Judge Waller T. Col
quitt presiding. The following persons
were sworn as grand Jurors aud served the
first court ever held iu the oounty.

Deaths.
Died. December. 2b, 1880, at the resi
dence of her son J. W. b usy, in St. Clair
coun'y, Ain., Mrs. Nancy B.akely Laney,
in the U9th year of her age. Mrs. Laney
nas born and raised in Son h Carolina and
moved lo Harris county, Ga., with her hus
band, David Laney, in 1833, and located iu
the western part of the county. Space for
bids our speaking in detail of the many no
ble trails of character posseg-ed by our
ohristian mother: suffice it to say for Biauy
years previous 10 ter death, she was aa n
implary member of the MetbodiNt E.
Chnroh, and left sufficient testimony before
she died, that “all ia well.”
On Thursday mourning at I o’clock Mr
Mark A Huling died at his home near
Monutaiu Hill, Harris county, after a g >uie
wh .t protracted illness. It ie the opinion
of the writer that Mr. Huling waa born in
Wi.kos county, Ga., and was in hia seventy
third year wbeu he died. He had hved iu
Una county a good many yeara euioytng the
confidence and rrapoct of all who knew him.
Ho waa a member of the Masouic fraternity
at Hargett Gxui-g*- Ha'l Lodge, and at hia
request, buried with Masouic honors.
The following members acted as all
bearers.
