An excellent story from (be vrstii

lienr. Grady ba the following in a letter
from New York, concerning me popular
ity of I’rot. Feck:
“A gentleman who sella enormous quan
tities of tbe New York Lodger to sub
dealer* told me tbe other day that Frof.
William Henry Feck, of Atlanta, was now
the strong cord of tbe peper. Always a
chief attraction, thero were elder wntera
on tbe Ledger who “had the call” over
him with the Ledger readers, oapocial.y
ns bis service on the paper had been in
termittent. During the past few years he
has steadily gone to the front, however,
and now, as this dealer nays, “one of
Peck's stories pashes up the nvio and
steadies the circulation as nothing else
does." He said further that the popular
ity of the pr6sont stories is resulting ia
an toemsing dementi foi back vo'nmr a
containing Professor Feck's outlier Rto
ilea. To be the ‘strong card" ou the
Ledger moans to he. the favorite with the
largest audience written for by any man
in America, if not in the world. The
Ledger has the lnr-eet circulation, by
probably 200,000, of any paper in Amer
ica, and with one exception, probably
tbe largest in the world.
“It is the rno-t devoted constituency,”
Rays the newa-doaler, “as well as tbe
largest that any American author writes
for. The readers cf the Ledger will
have their papier every week if they have
to ga without their dinner to get it. It
is very fortunate that it is pure, or it
might do incalculable damr.ga. It em
ploys the pens of the wisest und best es
sayists, und its storiep, while they are
thrilling and exciting, r.re always pure
nod correct. The right fellow always
whips tbe fight, and the virtuous gill al
ways comes oat ahead with a certainty
that is encouraging. Prof. Peck's sto
ries have the fnney and spirit of Dumas’
best work, but they are clearly healthy
smi sparkling.”
All of which lam more than happy
to record of a man who deserves it all
and mora."

Is on oor table. The steel plate is a
beautiful picture from (Scott's ‘ilsnaste

of intense interest, entitled “Sacrifice,’’
and a number of short stories, poems,

A Remarkable Man.
Facie John Mannd of Talbot ooucty, la
one of tbe remarkable men of this (bate
H i has kept a diary for forty or more
years and has not failed to make an entry
in it a single day since it was ooiumeuced.
, His memory is aa good as Walter Scott's
j ucd ho would make nearly as good a rep
utation if be should devote himself to lit—
i amtnre. liia knowledge of persons and
! things in Georgia and O-orgia history ia
superior, perhaps, to (but of any livirg
man. He not only knows tbe name of every
county in ihe State, bat he in able to give
not only the namd but the county site, the
number cf the lot of land on which it ie
situated with tbo number of tho district
and the DRrae of some resident of the
place. Ihe following interview lisd with
! tiiiu by Walter Do Wolf, will be road with
! mteteM, t.y all. It is characteristic,
j “Among tho distinguished visitors her*
i we had thd pleasure of mooting the Hon.
j John 0. Mannd, from whose conversation
! we gather the following incident* in the
j history of Talbotton, which will doubt
j loss prove interesting to your readei*.
To my query as to whether ho know much
: about tbe early history of tho town, he
said:
. “Well, I should think so. 1 carried the
grape vino for tho surveyor, old D:l! Mc-
Mnrray, who laid it out. Ia fact, I cut
the grape vine in Wilson’s creek, for
which he paid me a quarter. That was in
1827 or 1823, I think. Talbotton is locat
ed on lot 266, ltiili district, formerly Mus
cogee county, and was drawn by a man
ramed Gilbert, who gave it to his son, tut
afterwards took it away from him when
it was decided to locate Talbotton on it.
*
There was a groat deal of excitement over
the location of t e county site at the time,
the other candidate for Ihe location besng
Centerville, about five miles east of Tat
botton, and each place run a man for the
Logisla'nre. Zack While was Talbotton’s
candidate and Ichabod Cox Centerville’s
and tho latter was elected, bnt nufoituu
a‘ely for Centerville, the school of politics
to which Cos belonged was in minority ia
tbe legislate. •, and Tall otton's name was
inserted in tho bill despite his efforts.
After the passage of the t.-il, Mr. Cox rose
in his seat and asked to be allowed to
change bis name (meaning from the neys
tc the yeas), when a weg belonging to tho
opposition t*id he would second the gen
tleman's request and would suggest that
hie uacie be changed to Cock-doodle.
This created an uproar and the change
was never made.
The first court house vts a lop hut lo*
j cated on tbo northwest corner of the
J present court lot, arid I h ve often seen
t.n ir,any ss fifty fights in one : rgitt in it,
end mere broken r,o es and bunged eyes
than you coa el count. Thuee wore
good oid days before the cupretuat, of
i !o!s, when a man like myself stood
showing, and a knock dowu st:d <irsg-oat
did tot necessitate r- funeral. This court
room wits used till the completion of the
preient court house in 1881 which was
built by Charles and John K. Burch.
The town and this section was viaitod by
u terrible storm in 1532, which ds-I groat
d.imnge, knocking out tbs gable ends of
the court house. There have been 105
sefaior.s of the superior eonrt held in this
county, 101 of which I have attended—r
was providentially prevented from at
tending the other four. Twelve judges
administered justice in that temple, the
first of whom wa3 Walter T. Oolqnit‘>
who was followed by G E. Thomas, Al
fred Iverson, Joseph Sturgis, &!• J. Well
born, Robert B. Alexander, E. H. Wor
rr 1!, Jamas Johnson, Martin J. Crawford,
E. M. Butt, J. L. Wimberly and J. T.
\Vi ID. You nolice that Tim Willis is tbo
twelfth of the judges, don't you?”
“Yes, bat what of that?”
“There’s a great deal in that. Twelvo
is a kencficient number. Don't yon read
the scripture - ? but of course you don’t,
I never knew a newspaper man that did.
However, you should read Tulmago’s ber
mons which are published in tho 'limes
nnd if yoo htul road his lust you would
have learned that there were twelve tribes
of 3-e:ael for tho anoieat tabernacle,
twelve obargors, twelve silver bowls,
twelve bullocks, twelve lambs of the first
year. Fuither on, twelve stouts taken
from ine dephths of the Jordan to build
a memorial; twelve lions ou the steps of
Solomon’s throne; twelvo legions of an
gels; twelve apostles, twelve baskets of
fragments, twelve stars for the woman's
crown in Revelations, twelve gates of
heaven, w.th twelve paarls, and twelve
foundations, with tho names of the twelve
apostles, and twelve manner of fruits.
I ne tired and thirsty Iserehtitß came up
on an oasis in the desert, and h ! ttire
were just twelve wells of bright
heaven- rewed, God- given w ater.
“Yes, sir, I expcoi great things from
this twelfth judge, a general reformation
among the evil doors in this circuit, or a
powerful augmentation of the chain gangs
and (’claga i ion to tho State penitentiary
from it. But you’ve p’aved it, switched
oao off on tbo scripurc-s when I set off to
tell yen something about Talbotton, and I
have got to go now, but I’ll see you again
before you leave town.”

of Mr. J. E. lloyan.
In ihe Inexplicable providence of an all
wire God, we aro again visited by the
death of cue ol our britberen, Why
death should nave marked so important
and netful member as brother us
his victim we cannot tell. But it is His
will, and of course It is right, “for tbs
judge of ail the earth will do right."
brother llrgau was a sincere, earnest
hearted Christ .an gentleman, a man of
probitv and unquestionable integrity. He
loved his church and supported it with a
self-vacrificiug devotion. He loved all its
interests and labored to sustain them. He
always fil.cd his scat in tlie church and
Sunday School, and wielded a potent in
fluence for good in all tl.e departments of
church work. Though a quiet member,
hfs influence was felt, and he has left a
good name among u which " will loug
remember. The committee recommend
the adoption of the following re.oiutious:
Resolved, That in the death of brother
Hogan the Church feels (fleetly Hlliicte.l
and deplores the loss as in . patable ; but is
satlf fled that her loss is his unspeakable
gain.
Resolved, That the community lamonls
in his death the loe of a good citizen, a
kind neighbor. a generous friond.
Resolved, That in Ilia family no iungu
age can de-e ihe the severe affliction. All
affectionate husband is taken from n de
voted wife, a faithful ami indulgent father
from the children who loved and honored
him. Tho held of the family, provident,
piudcnt —go neccisa ytu the household
is forever gone.

The Atlanta Coualitution says that
Treasurer .Speer baa received a letter from
A. D. Williams, of Chicago, stating that
ho baa just rocovered possession of
SIO,OOO of Georgia bonds isr.netl in aid
of tho Atlantic and Gulf railroad which
wore lost in 1862. Mr. Williams atr-ries
that the bonds were sent through the con-<
federate lines nndor a ficticious address
and were eont from Nassau to Halifax,
Nova Scotia, where they were lost or
stolen. It ia supposed that Mr. Williams
was known to bn disloyal ao be was afraid
tbe hoci'a would fall into the bands of
tbe United States and be confiscated.
Tbe principe! of $10,00(1 and the interest
for eighteen years at six per cent is due
amonnliog in all to over $20,000. Ihe
bonds were due last August, and a singu
lar fact is that no bonds or coupons of
tbe nnmbcrs given hsve ever been pre
sented for Dayment during the eigb'-en
vesta. The question ba* bet-n submitted
to the governor, but it ia probable that if
the bonds are presented and prove to be
genuine that !h*y will ba p-,id.
