What Quiteau Wanted to Say.
When Gtnteau was arranged for
trial on Friday, he asked permission
to make a statement. The follow’-,
jug is his statement, ns given by the
New York Herald:
If the Cmm please—I wish to
bay that I have been terrible vilified
by tho pros-, and it has made some
person- bitter and repulsive against
tn». On Oc'ober 6th, tho New
York Herald published seven col¬
umns irorn my autobiography,
tvhich 1 expect to issue soon in a
book. Aside from the impertinent
Rtatesment that I am a creature of
the greatest vanity and that I cravu
notoriety—which are absolutely
falsie—and similar unkind state¬
ments, I am indebted to reporter
and the Herald for giving me so
fair a hearing. I plead not pnil y
to the indictment and my defense is
three- fold.
1. Insahity, in that it w as God’s
act and not mine. The Divine
pressure on me to removes the Pres¬
ident. was so enormous that it des¬
troyed my free agercy, and there¬
fore I cm»not legally responsible
for my act.
2. The President died from mal¬
practice. About three weeks ^(el¬
ite was shot, his pliyai^iw**, fiber a
careful examination, decided thai
he wold reever. Two mouths after
this official announcement he died.
Therefore I say tie was not fatally
shot. If he had been well treated
lie would have recovered
S^Tlto president died Gn New
Joreey, and, therefore, beyond the
jurisdiction of this court. This
hmlpraetioo and tho Presindeni’s
death in Now Jersey are special
providences, nnd I am bound to
ayail myself of them on my trial in
jmstioe lo the Lord and myself. I
uuderiako lo say that the Lord is
mamging my case with consum
rnftlo ability aud that ho hits a spe¬
cial object in allowing 'lie President
to'dii|ui,New,' Jersey, His min¬
agemont of this case is worthy of
Him as the Dolly, and I have mure
confidence in hie disposition to pro*
ted me and send mo forth to the
world a lice and vindicated man.
“He ulteroth Ills voice,” says ihe
PsalmiBt, “and the earth molted.”
This is the God I served whdn I
sought to remove tho President. The
L >rd and people do not seem to
agree in tins ease. The people
consider the President’s removal an
unbearable outrage mid me a das¬
tardly assassin, and they prayed
the Lord to spare tha^presidenU
lor nearly throe months the Lord
kcpl'tbe,Presid> nt/ut ilte**'poiut of
death, and then allowed him to de
part, confirming my act. The
mere fact of the president's death
isjnolhieg.j Ad men have died and
t
nil men will die. Gut Burnside
died suddenly about the time the
President-did- The .President and
Gen. Burnside,wtiro both splendid
men, and no one regrets their do*
parture more'than I.££Tho Presi
dent died from malpractice and
Gen. Burnside apoplexy. Both
were special providences, anti the
people ought to submit to tho Lord
in the matter, Tho President
would not have died had the Lord
not wished him to go. I havejno
conception of it as a murder, 1
had nojeeliog'ol wrongdoing when
I sought to remove him, because it
was God’s act, aud not mine, for the
good of ll o American people. 1
plead not guilty to tbe indictment.
A miserable man vr woman is certainly
cue who suffers with dyspepsia, sour atom
ach, constipation, trad troubles arising
from an inactive liver. We would s,y to
