son spent last Sabbath with their
Hamilton friends.
—Rumor has it that one of our
cleverest young men is to lead to the
altar soon, one of our most accom¬
plished young ladies. This is as it
should be.
—Mr. Hal Bryant will commence
next week the erection of a neat res¬
idence, near -Dr. Mitchell’s. He has
his lumber already on the grounds.
—Marshall Johnston is convalesc¬
ing and his many friends hope to
have the pleasure of seeing him out
scon.
—Miss Alice Godwin, a charming
LaGiange lass, has been playing sad
havoc with the hearts of our boys,
during the Christmas holidays. She
is the guest of Miss Lula Barnes, on
Mill street.
—Judge Williams was the last one
of our folks to take in the Cotton
Exposition.
_The Misses Schley, whose beau
tiful residence was burned Christmas
eve, do not think of re-building at
once. They have rented Mr. Eugene
Gnjgkerry’s place.
—Like Guiteau, we had a pleas
ant Christmas and a happy New
Year.
—Miss Fannie Hood paid Hamil

—Rev. E. J. Burdr and lady re¬
turned to their charge yesterday,
after spending a pleasant vacation,
visiting relatives, friends and the Ex

pleasure by our entire community.

Needs Periston.
It is to be regretted that the city
fathers have been so penurious as to
allow Mr. Hardy only half the
amount they had agreed to pay him
for the council house destroyed by
fire oa the night of December 19th.
If they pay him anything they ought
to pay him the full value of the build¬
ing and there is not a citizen of the
community who will not say that ii
the lire was the work of an incendiary
—and few believe it was not—he
ought to be paid. It is to be hoped
their action will be speedily revised
by their successors and justice done

Death of an Old, Citizen.
As the new year was born, there
expired at his home near Kings Gap,
one of the fetv citizens of our county
who were living at the beginning of
the present century. Mr. Win. Mc
Carter was born in South Carolina in
1791. on December 29th, and died
three days after his ninet'elhb.rthday.
He has been a citizen of Harris coun¬
ty since 1834, and raised a family of
ten children, seven of whom have
crossed or-er before him. lie has
always been an honored citizen, serv
ed in the war of 1836 under General
Scott Before moving to Harris he
was a member of the Presbyter.an
church. After removing here coa
nected himself with the Methodist
church, there being no Presbyterian
church near him, and his life was
consistent with his profession. He
W buried Wednesday with Masonic
honors.

Last Monday was celebrated by

homes of Dr. Frauk.hu Barnes and
Col. Jas. M. Mobley were thrown
open to all calieis. The occasion
was one of unmixed pleasure.
