’l’ivs old and famous agricultural
journal, familiar to every farmer and
planter in the Southern States, has
passed under control of Messrs. Jas.
P. Harrison & Co., of Atlanta. The
January number now before us, is
U D questionable the finest issue of an
agricultural journal ever published in
the South, and is not excelled by any
publication of die kind anywhere.
Dr. Jones, its editor for many years
and an acknowledged authority upon
the subjects treated by him, remains
at the helm, assisted by Dr. Lawton,
well known as an experienced and
sagan.ous writer on farm topics.
These gentlemen are aided by a spe¬
cial corps of writers and general con
Iributors of high ability, who will all
contribute to maintain the high and
env iable position held by the Culti
vator. Write the publishers for their
terms.

Obituary.
Henry E. Moss died at his resi
d ence in Harris county on the nth
day of June, 1881, having attained
the ripe age of eighty years, three
months and twenty days. He was
born in Hancock county, Ga., and
received the first rudiments of his
education at the little school at Pow
elton, under the tuition of Beman,
"’bo afterwards became so famous as
an educator in western Georgia. At
this school he was the chum of Ab
solam H. Chappell, and here was
commenced a friendship which,
though their after pursuits were wide
l v divergent, was cherished and main*
tained throughout the long life aliot
ted to each. The one went forth to
the contests of the forum, and to
mingle in exciting political scenes;
the other retired to the quiet walks of
P r ' vate b te -
In the twenty-sixth year of his age,
Judge Moss married Miss Annie
Whitfield, only daughter of Shirley
Sledge. Soon afterwards they moved
to the the new country of Harris
county. After a year or two pros¬
pecting, he selected a spot where he
resided the remainder of his life.
Here he erected a commodious dwel¬
ling, and reared a large family, con¬
sisting of his own children and those
of a deceased brother. He was suc
cessful as a planter, and as the coun¬
try developed he became the centre
of a large circle of friends and ac
quaintences. During the adolesceuce
of his children his home was the
abode of generous hospitality and
refined associations.
Judge Moss was possessed of su
perior natural ability, and might have
obtained and fulfilled efficiently the
duties of office. But he did not de¬
sire any public employment. He
preferred to seek happiness in the
bosom of his family and the society
of his friends. His large experience
and practical knowledge of affairs
made him a very deskable companion
and safe adviser. He became a kind
of umpire for his neighbors. Es*
chewing the courts, they would bring
their little differences to him for ad
jusfment, and so great was their con¬
fidence that an appeal from lus de¬
cision was of rare occurrence.
As illustrative of this confidence,
it may be related that one of his
neighbors, J. Dunlap, dying left a
large estate, amounting to over one
hundred thousand dollars. Judge
Moss was nominated in the will as
executor, and it was stipulated that
he should be required to give no se¬
curity, nor to make return to any
court. This delicate trust he dis¬
charged to the satisfaction of all con¬
cerned. Many widows could be
named who by his assistance and ad¬
vice had been safely led through se¬
rious business difficulties, and re¬
stored to quiet and comfort in their
homes. He was a man who met and
faithfully fulfilled the duties of life as
they presented themselves; to his

would often sit apart apparently ab
sorbed in philosophic contemplation,
but there was nothing morose, noth¬
ing querulous. He was ready at all
times to lend a sympathetic ear to
the plaints of childhood, or to bestow
a word of counsel or a helping hand
to a friend in distress. And as old
age crept on apace, he went cheerful¬
ly on, desiring neither to hasten nor
shun the inevitable, and at last died
without a disease. In the language
of his physician, the vital machinery

hisoxvn conduct. His life was a happy
one, so far as that term may be ap
plicable to a mortal state. He
to see his children settled in life and
embarked m honorable careers. As
to fortune, • he enjoyed that happy
mean, equally removed from want
or superfluity, which has been thought
by philosophers to be most conducive
to happiness and virtue.
His children cherish his memory
with a most filial reverence; his faith¬
ful consort, who yet survives him, el¬
evated by age above the petty cares
and concerns of this life, serenely
waits the coming of the master. The
father, the husband, is removed be¬
yond the realm of their senses: they
cannot see him, they cannot touch
him, they cannot hear him; but inr
agination, which defies time and
space, may pursue and view him in
that bourne where a meritorious life
is justly estimated and rewarded.
It is both pleasant and benificent
to contemplate the motives, the ac¬
tions and the results of a good life.
It elevates our estimate of the dignity
of human nature; it enlarges our
view of its moral capabilities, and
challenges our emulation. It rescues
from despair virtue struggling amidst
the evil and ills of humanity, and
strengthens our hope in the final tri¬
umph of goodness and truth. Such
a life was that of the deceased; and
this last tribute to his memory is of
fered by one who for many years en
joyed bis friendship, recognized his
worth and appreciated his virtues.
