1 'he Senatorial Nomination.
The Journal heartily endorses the
action of the Democratic Executive
Committee of our county in asking
for the nomination of the party can¬
didate for the Senate by primary ele
tions in the several counties compos¬
ing the district, and is glad that the
Executive Committee of the district
has seen proper to act upon the sug¬
gestion favorably.
Party usage gives Harris county
the next Senator. 'I his Talbot and
Upson both concede, Conceding
this, they still have the right to pass
upon the fitness for the nomination
of any name we may present and
the power and right,to substitute one
which would bring more strength to
the party. District conventions have
been held for this purpose.' 1 1 The
County claiming . the
senator can sun
ply suggest its choice for the position
it cannot nominate. The power to
nominate is vested in the district.
We hold that conventions ought to
select the strongest mail available
for the position . Party usage enti¬
tling us to the next senator, no one
living elsewhere in the district will be
Considered available. To nominate
by primaries as proposed, insures the
selection of the most popular man
not in his county but in the district.
If primary elections are better in a
county than conventions, for nomi¬
nating party candidates, why . should
they not be in the Senatorial dis¬
tricts?

to have been done in a Careful pains
taking manner, reflecting credit upon
him. For the sake of comparison we

the dwellers in these tenement hous¬

something of the work of the two

profanity by tha way they are tearing
up the streets down town for the pur¬

INDEPENDENT DEMOCRATIC NEWSPAPER.
GA., FRIDAY, JULY 28, 1882.
It is something like lire brick, but
so constructed, that while it is abso¬
lutely fire-proof in the fiercest name,
it may be sawed, planed, nailed, grooved,
turned with a lathe, screwed
and, generally treated as ordinary
lumber may be. Entire houses, with
the exception of posts and beams
(which naturally would be made of
iron), may be constructed of the new
lumber, and would no more burn
down, than the cupola in an iron fur¬
nace. Of about onC half the weight
of ordinary brick, it will be especially
applicable to the walls, partitions &c,
of high buildings, because the weight
resting on the foundations and lower
walls will be so much less than when
bricks are used for this purpose. Ex¬
cept for tensile strength, it has all the
advantages of wood, with the inesti¬
mable advantage of being as incom¬
bustible as iron.
Perhaps, in the year 1900, you cr
I may come across an old paper con¬
taining this letter, and may laugh at
the interest felt at this time, in what
may then be far behind current
improvements* as to be obsolete, but
I don’t concern myself with what
may be the newest thing twenty
years hence, and I welcome whatever
comes to the front in 1882, which
may promise to add to our comfort
and our safety.

A law was passed last winter,
which imposed further duties upon
those who desire to become a cor

fefis for certificates, filing, recording
&c., so that it now costs from $io to
$50 to become incorporated in this
State, and this will tend to lessen the
number of new and irresponsible
companies.
