3H2W YORK LETTER.
Hi;,Our It erjular Correspondent .
Nev Yoi:k, July 23, iS3.,
SIDEWALK SWARMS:.
I had occasion on the everting of.
y&ne of tlte scorching days of last week
to take a business trip to the East.
Not as far to-“the East” as Asia Nu
nor although I found myself surroun¬
ded by “Greeks,” nor-to the banks
of the Nile, although were plenty ci- |
street Arabs. It .was only over on
east side of town, which is as much I
of unknown land to the resident along i
the central ridge of the city, as the !
head waters of the Amazon 1 was
first amazed, the amused, the, an
noyed, and then interested in the side
walk population, which seemed I encounter¬ be
ed. Every body to on
the side-walks, or at open doors, and
windows, and so many children to
the block, L never saw before. Chil¬
dren of all uses, colors, and sexes (foi
there were some who seemed to be
neither wholly boys or girls but a
eompound of both.) Children dirty
and ragged and vile, children decent
r.nd'clean, children.weak, and child¬
ren lusty, children of to carrying.oth¬
er children of 2, children playing hop¬
scotch, tag, soldier, and prize fighting,
children pawing over the gutters . for
bits-of decayed lemon, thrown smoking out of
the saloon, and children
stumps of cigars, likewise found in
the refuse heap.-.—And every moth¬
ers son and daughter of the talking,
screaming, singing, crying or infantile quarrel¬
ing at the top of his or her
voice. The side walks were almost
impassable, and tlte din was terrific.
Babies clothed in innocence and • a
single garment, sprawled and relied
on the hot pavements,, and scantily
clad mothers fanned themselves on
the door steps. Looking into the
narrow .hall ways of the houses, whence
the .-horde had swarmed. I wondered,
not that so many should die in the
tenement house districts, but that
so many should live-.. Considering
the. stifling rooms in which families are
packed like sardines in a box. I was
no longer impatient with the scream¬
ing children who • blocked salvation my way.
Poor things, their only lies
in getting out into the air, even though
that air is quivering with mid-summer
heat..
THE DEATH* RATE
for the past two weeks has been
alarming. I am the week ending on
the 13th the. deaths in the.city num¬
bered 1084 and’ in- the following
week, 102.6. Of the first 929, and of
the last 614 were, in.houses, contain¬
ing fear or more families. In each
week 371 children under 5 years of
age, n;ed from causes generally class¬
es'! as .“summer complaints,” caused
06 aggravated by want of proper food,
ait;>0tion and air..
Now, think of the hot, stifling,
wretched- rooms in which most of
those 371 children fought fo.r.a time,
against pain and sickness and death
nook of the surroundings that were

His death, occurred in Hamilton

tween life and death for some time,
but, though warned of his rapidly ap

but hope that his strong; constitution

disease and he would be spared to
his family and friends. But such was
not the case, and his death comes

like a shock.
There are few - men in Georgia

Dr. Copeland. He was born in
Harris county in 1849, and was there¬
fore about thirty-three years of age.
He recei ved a .fair literary education,
but did not enjoy the privileges of a
regular collegiate.- course, preferring
rather to devote.his study to that of
‘medicine. Ills medical,
was of a high order, and upon re

Harris and entered upon the prac
tice. He located at Valley Plains,
where he practiced .a few years, anti
then moved'to Flamilton, where ho!

married to Miss Mollie Copeland
about throe years ago, and to them
one child has been-born.- He was
the son of Mr. J. T. Copeland,' of
Hamilton, and beside hi.s. vyife and
little babe, he leaves a large circle, of
relatives and friei^ds. His funeral
will take place to-day, and his re¬
mains be placed in the cemetery at
Hamilton.
