SURVIVAL OF “STFWART’S."
It has been a matter of cohsidera
b! e curiosity to know what was to be
done with Stewart's marble store,
spoke ot this in a former letter, as
being so big an elephant, that there
seemed to be no use for it It is now
reported that a new partnership is to
be formed, comprising Judge Hiltons
Son, and several of the old employees
of the store, to continue the business
'
under the old name of A. T. Stew
art & Co. Mrs. Stewart is said to
object to the name being allowed to
'die out perhaps she backs up her
’claims, by furnishing a part off the
necessary capital. The young men
must be cautious; they cannot Cake
money out of the name of the dead
merchant, unless they have art inheri
tance of some of his brains to acconi
]>any the name.
Meantime, I hear that the old store
at the corner of Chamber Street, is to
be raised two or three floors, and
turned into offices, which is the best
use that can be made of it. Office
property down town pays band divi¬
dends. and although the building is
but of the range of the most active
demand, it should command profita¬
ble figures.
PALACE CAES FOR HEAVEN.
I see another one oi our City
•Church organizations has arranged to
to build a new church on the corner
of Madison Avenue, and an uptown
street—right among the nabobs. Ot
course, it is to have all the modern
improvements, it is announced that
it is to be fitted up in a style befitting
the swell proclivities of its surround¬
ings. No end of money is to be
Spent in making it comfortable, and
attractive for the millionaires so they
can go to church in style and worship
God with all the himcrles of the
times. It will be no place lor a man
or woman.
The gilding and the carving, and
•he elegant upholstery are not for | i
them. The can take the ordinary
coaches, or the Emiglant cars on the
lievenly road, if they can find them.
This is one of the palace cars for the
New Jerusalum, if any poor traveler
who wants to get there, happen to
venture in he will be informed by
•he pompous porter I mean the
sexton—that the seats are all engag
ed for the season, at each that would
send one hundred poor chilldren ib j
the country, for a fortnight, or keep a
iiodt family from want foi a year.
We must have this thing in style you
see, and must draw the hue between |
the risk, and the rest of the world,
even in oiir churches. Otherwise we
might find somebody possessing less
than a half million in the compart
inent to us, as we neared the golden '
gate, and that would be too shocking
for anything to some of the Murray
Hill Christians.
A SUNDAY WASH.
Down on the Jerey Coast, there
me sev eral places originally selected
for camp-meeting grounds. Having
been carefully located forcomfort and
convenience, the projectors found j
th-ry could make money by creating
watering places, out of the camp
mceting grounds, and cottages and
boarding places have multiplied with¬
in these boundaries. Street rules for
the preservation of the morality of
the communities have been laid down,
and in general, they are very com
mendable, by keeping out drinking
ii alodns and other objec jv fea
tures But sometimes re rcgula
tions savor of bigotry, as when they
say there must be no bathing on Sun¬
day lust how much worse a man will
be if he takes a Sunday morning wash
in the ocean, than he did in a bath
tub, I havent been able to find out,
but I suppose the local authorities
have got the calculation down to
dot At one of their resorts, early
Sunday morning, some gentlemen
were taking a bath prepartory to
dressing for breakfast auH church,
Oneof the early rising dignitaries
was shocked, and going to the shore,
ordered them to come out. They
Tefused. He threatened to carry off
their clothes, if they did not instantly
obey. They mildly but firmly in¬
formed him if he dared touch an af
tide, they-would catch him and throw
him into the surf; even if they had
to run hint through thi village, to
tatch him. As rite custom they
wore was conducive to rapid running,
and they looked as if they
what they said, and he had on his
good clothes, and didn t want to
scantilize the community by the spec
tacle of four nearly naked beings in
full hue and cry after him he
ed to let the clothes alone, and satis
fied his conscience by calling ri> ern
men of sin, and children of Belial

Whales are getting common, and the

was gotten out against the whale, and
a constable put in possession. Now he
wants to know what to do with it.
He don’t dare to leave it, and he is
getting sick by watching it. His wife
