The Railroad P.oject. j
The project of a R nil road from Griffin
to Decatur, Alabama, is eliciting a good
ideal of attention, and promises to result
in something mure than mere talk. We
it.si week published the proceedings of a
meeting at Carrollton, at which books
ut re opened and stock subscribed for to
the amount of about §33,000. Delegates
were idso appointed to attend a meeting
at JVewnan on the lffh of May next, at
w hich,, doubtless, books of subscription
will btt opened and stock taken in the
same emerpiise by the people of Cos we a
county.
Would it not lie well for the citizens of
Griuh'i to call a meeting and adopt some
preliminary measures of co-operation, as
weP. as appoint delegates to the Newnan
meeting? No one certainly can feet
indifferent upon a suiject involving so
deep an interest to our community. We
ars satisfied that the people of {Spalding
county will be no ways backward in their
contributions to this enterprise, when the
matter shall come fully and fairly before
them; but we must be permitted to say,
that it would better become them to take
the initiative than to wail for othens, with
fewer interests at slake, to set the ball in
motion. We like deliberation; we are
always more sanguine of the success of
plans that are well discussed and mature
ly considered before entered upon. But
it seems to us there can bs but onfe opin
ion as to the advantages of the proposed
road trom Griffin to North Alabama.
In the first place, it would unquestion
ably become a source of profit to the
s’.oekholdeis, opening up a channel of
trade and travel which would .concen
trate to it a business unsurpassed by any
oilier road in the Stale. Next, it would j
enhance the value of reai estate along itsj
entie line, 50 per cent; by biinging a[
market, us it were, to the very door off
the producer. The facility’ with which ■
the products of the farm couid be dispos- |
eii of, and til ir increased value, wouid !
stimulate the farmer to greater enterprise !
and industry . Seltleis would move into j
now sparsely populated distiicts; the sy.s- ■
tern ot farming would improve; the price I
of lands go up; daily intercourse with iu-.j
lelligtnt, emerprizing business men,!
wouid expand the views and awaken the
dot mint energies of people long shut out
trom the stir and busiie of active life.—
That these are some of the inevitable le
sults of radioad enterprises, no one who ;
studied their history will deny.
Oilier interests will exercise a great !
influence in the construction of the Grif
fin ami Decatur road. The Macon &!
Western Railroad Company will doubt- j
less anticipate the advantages likely to;
accrue to itself in the increased amount
of freight and travel which such a road
would bring to it, and will promote by |
its stock subscriptions the furtherance of
the project. So with the Central Road.
And when we come to Savannah, who
duubts that she will contribute to the ex
tent of her ability. Were there no other;
motive, self-iuletest alone would render!
the consummation of this work a matter!
of deep importance to her. indeed, the 1
mad itself was suggested at Suvauisah,
and the history of that city teaches thoi
her citizens are not addicted to sporting
with the hopes of the people, or sketch
ing enterprises which they are not pre
pared to “back up.” Savannah will do
her part.
We have said ih.it the people of Giif
fin and of Spalding rou-nty will not be
backward in promoting the success of
the road to Decatur, and that an earnest
may be given of what we are willing to i
do, we renew the Jeffersouians’s sugges- |
lion of two week’s back, that a meeting j
be held here on the first Tuesday in May’
for die adoption of such measures of co
operaiion .iHii ii.o people of Carroll and I
Cow eta eounU •, as rnay be , deemed
most comtuctivo to the interests of the,
project undet consideration.
