A Mew Use for Cotton.
Invention, which goes far to make use
ful almost ever) production of nature,
hns found anew use for cotton, in which
without doubt a very largo amount will
ho emptied. We allude to ihemattras
sc-ss now coming so favorably and ex
tßtisivelly into use in preference to any
articD heretofore tried. The writer of
this lm tn? Jone for the lad. six months
past, and has found it to possess every
requisite and desirable quality of a mat
tra.,s, without the objection uo frequently
• ur< r ad against moss, curld hair or husk —
husks moulding from damps, bad
smells from the curled hair in summer,
and the dampy matting of the moss.—
The cotton felting, prepared by a pa!en- (
led process, has none of thf^e. annoyances
is Always elastic, find will, with ordinary
care, last a life time. Our friends r, way
down _on the old plantations” will please
make a note of this, and consider that
the invention is a feather in their caps,
or rather money in their purses—as the
demand for raw material at home will
doubtless materially increse the price.-*—
” e fee! sure that iif the real qualities of
tliis mat trass are ever gr<ade known to
the-public generally, five hundred thous
and bale* a year would not satisfy the
demand for its manufacture. The arti
cle having been thoro’ly tried on the
principle of steam ships, and approved
by their owners, as well as by physici
ans who have tried it, and strongly re
commend them, we doubt not the Paten

Mr. Editor.— Fermit me through the
tniedium of your valuable paper, to make
a few remarks in extenuation, as I
think of the claims of ©e of our citizens.
In the first place, however, permit me
to say, that X am not exactly a Southern
Lights man,(though born and raised in
the south,) nor do I believe in discarding
every thing that may come from the
I North— whether it he good or or bad, far
;it uni it—l hope I have a little too much
charity tor that. It matters but very lit
he uitJeranee to me, where a tnan comes
from it he is made the right way of the
dirt. So long as a man is honorable and
iiOticsl in all his dealings he should com
mand profound respect from his fellows.
.Merit should always be rewarded no
matter from whence it einenates; wheth
er from the high or low rich or poor.
In every community, you will find a
i tdass of good honest clever citizens, who
I :lre kept down by the chicanery and in
! iriguo of others, less worthy than them
i selve —this is the way eve.y where.
But to make a short story of a long
one Mr. Editor y ou have a gentleman in
>our midst, industrious and enterprising,
who in tny Judgement, is every way wor
thy of such. I mean Mr. Ufiord, the
Saddler and Harness maker on Hill
street. I have watched closely the move
ments oi this gentleman, since he has
been a resident of our quiet little city,
lie pa3’s marked and strict attention to
his own business, and by the by, he
never meddles or interferes w ith that of
others. His work upon examination,
wdi be found to he put up in the very
best style and njo doubt would pass the
overseers square, at all times. Hie pri
ces are moderate, and many articles
are realy cheaper, tl*an 1 have aver seen
Uis same sold for any where else. His
harness saddlery &e, are all made at
home, by the workmanship of his own
hands and no mistake. Call and see his
estanlishmeut and then advise your
friends to lend him a helping hahd, and at
least to give him a call and examine his
stbtk. JONATHAN.
