The Cholera in England.
Much alarm prevailed ir> England at our
ias* elates, says the Savannah Courier, in
relation to the appearance of the cholera.
( asps anil deaths had occurred at Gates
head, Newcastle, v ort fi Shields, South
Shields, Sunderland, Manchester, London
and Liverpool. An Order in council had
been issued, announcing that the Act for
the Prevention of Epidemic Diseases,
would immediately he put in requisition,
ihe London Morning Chronicle states
that the epidemic has assumed a severer
form than it did in 1831 -’32. The mor
tality had been more rapid, and contagion
lif science will still admit such a word
into its vocabulary) more divergent:—
I he Times tells us:
“This time ‘lie cholera has allowed us
hot short respite, and although it is possi
ble that we may not lee! its full virulence
until the cold season shall have passed
away, yet here it is; and for the time its
devastations appear m ire sweeping than
before. I*\ r the moment the head quar
ters of ihe disease is now at Newcastle
and in that town- the terrible fact has been
already noted that, whereas in 1831 only
61 persons died of cholera during the
first fifteen days of its appearance, upon
the present occasion 214 persons have
fallen victims to its power do ing the
corresponding petiod. It can scarcely, I
then, he said with propriety that the dis- J
ease lias assumed a milder form since the
period of i's first appearance. It fastens
upon its victims as insidiously and strikes
him down as suddenly, as it did some j
quarter of a century hack, when we were
first afd cted with its visitations. We
may add, as confirmatory evidence, that
certainly, in Copenhagen, and in the
North of Europe, where the ravages of j
the disease have, for some months past,
been most severely felt, nothing lias ap
peared to show that the disease is of a
hss fatal character than during its former
prevalence in Europe. The news from
Newcastle itself is had indeed—the epi- (
den.ic has already spread to Hexham, i
and, no doubt, will extend itself shortly i
over a wider space. At Newcastle the 1
greatest activity prevails. Thirty private ,
practitioners have been called in to assist !
the medical officers, who are employed on 1
the public account, and, even their help
vi'l, in all probability, he unequal to the
necessities of the occasion. Ihe fac.s
observed are too confirmatory of the
gloomy predictions''which ail persons who
have had the public safety at heart have (
constantly uttered for the last few years.*’
From the Mobile Tribune,
Alas! Our Lovely SoufZs
Alas! our lovely South! It is a tnoiirn
c\ The air seems dim with tears, and
( bill with sighs. On soul and heart lies
toe heavy hush of awe, for the “Pale
Ilor.-e and his r der, Death,” is passing
by. Oh, Father, we have sinned, fatally
sinned. We have forsaken the “narrow
path” for the “broad road.” We have
hushed ‘‘the still small voice,” to listen
‘o the Syren. We have qiienctied the i
Holy Spirit in our hearts, until they are’
ns die Dead Sea. With the nrmiiaj we
have marred the immortal. On thysa- 1
c:ed altar we have burnt offerings to Sa- I
tan. Oh, Holy God, we have damned -
ourselves to Death doomed to sin, and j
thou :n thy great justice, hast sent the
great destroyer to desolate us and to a- :
veigethee-—but, Father, wilt thou not
forgive? 1 boa said a broken heart and
a contrite spirit iJiou wouldsit r&ceisß and
pardon, and, our Father, these we bring .
We are wearied with the “wicked way.”
”''e long'to walk in the path of peace—i
in the love-light of thy smile. Oh, frown
and flash thy wrath upon us no more !
Spare! spare! that it may revive and
bloom for thee. Our Father, soothe us
with a Sabbath hymn, and cradle us in
thy sympathy. Julia.
