The Kook Family.
! hi* interestin'; family of young musi
cians performed in Griffin on Tuesday
evening, to the delight of a very respec
table audience. We have only room to
say we were enraptured. They go, We
understand, to Macon. Success attend
them.
The Year of Wrecks.
“'ere we at all a superstitious people,
we might well bo pardoned in eonsicljrmg
the sad events of the last few months as
ominous of evil to come Never since the
formation of the Federal Union, has such a
succession of disasters visited our lar.d. Tire
moist terrible elements have been at work,
each apparently striving to do its best,
First came the plague in the Southwest,
which only ceased with the decimation of
the fair country in which ! t first made its
appearance. Next, the country was vis
ited throughout its whole extent with des
tractive files, which seemed to be the work
of some weir conspired band of incendiaries.
Last, and not least, came the terrors
of the sea, which along our whole
stormy coast, from Maine to the Rio
Grand, is strewn with human wrecks.—
Who indeed, shall number the unhappy
beings who during the present year have
been hurried to their last account at a mo
ment’s summons? The beat, the storm,
the plague, the sea, fire and sword, seemed
rivals in the strife for victims
‘i he last chromTled catastrophe would
seem most terrible of all. Two hundred
and twenty human beings, strangers from a
foreign land, just as they reached the cho
>eu shore, are sent without a moment’s
warning to eternity—not one is left to tell
the tale. These with the 3 7 0 of the
wrecked Tayleur, the 180 of the Stafford
shire, and the 130 of the San Francisco,
make 90J human lives, whose loss by sea
it has been our sad lot to chronicle during
t*ie last four months.
But this is not all the tide, four other,
ships of equal size ami charged with like j
precious freight, .are probably sank be- ;
u**ath ‘ho oeean’s depths. The steamship j
Gity of Glasgow, says a writer, sailed!
from Glasgow lor Philadelphia on the Ist J
of March, with sonic four hundred souls |
on board, and has never since been spo-1
ken. The Lgy.iathan packet ship sailed’
trom New York, on the 22d of November,!
and the Lucia Field about the Ist of De
cember, both for Liverpool, and no ac
count of either has been received. The
clipper Dauntless left Boston for Yalpa- j
raiso on the 23d of October, and nothing j
is known of her fate.
i
If to these he a !deJ the brig-*, barks
ami schooners, ami other vessels Wtecke *
timing the last winter upon our coasts,
the list becomes fearfuiiy great. I’he
amount of ptoperty too destroyed, has
been ‘enormous, reaching in the case of all
.tii.>nsleis on the Atlanlic, during last
\ear, to a figure which even lining arith
meticians w ouid shrink from—certainly
ii’-Llovd’a list n(lords nnv soit of index,
beyond ten millions of dollars. It has}
been the year of wrecks.
In Mississippi the legislature adjourned
on the 2d instant, without, so far as- we
arc aware, any vote on the measure, (Ne
braska bill.)
In Alabama the legislature adjourned
nhoid a fortnight since, without an expres
sion of opinion in favor of the bill.
In Louisiana the legislature adjourned,
and was silent on the Nebraska bill.—No
(ii ihtl Iniel/ignt er.
The fogy editors of the National Intel
ligeneer ought to wake up, and familiarize
themselves better with passing events.—
‘I lie foregoing contains three important
mistakes. The legislatures of Mississippi,
Alabama, and Louisiana all declared in
favor of the Nebraska bill.— Missis.iippinn.
The Intelligencer has evidently lost the
run of Southern polities ever since Mr.
Fillmore began to tillibustcr for Cuba and
Canada. Wash Union.
The Nebraska excitement, says the New
York Journ il of Commerce, h is done one
t hing, for which we rejoice/ 11 has brought
out those latent abolitionists who were too
cowardly to show their hands so long
ns they thought it would be unpopular.
W e now sec what they are —mere “dough- j
faces,” afraid of their own shadows, but
fall of principle when there is any favor
to be be carried by it One of the most
furious an l uncharitable of our assailants .
.since the Nebraska war broke out, is a i
man who in 1 Sol or 1832, when he was |
u candidate for office, addressed us a
rate letter, begging that we \v<. T.u “not
oppose him, as he was good‘-Union”
manat heart, but thought it policy, just
then, to a leaning towards free
rcdism, lest lie should lose his hold upon
21 portion of his whig friends, who, he
bought, by u discreet management, could
be brought over to Union principles. We,
of course, took bi nut his word. He was
defeated, however, as lie deserved to be;
and now he seeks to ride into favor on an
other hobby of the same breed, which he
goads to distraction. We shall k low him
next tin e.
