ANNCAL SURSCIuFtIoN $250
SATURDAY MORNING. NOV. 7
TIIE TRAVELLER AND lIIS FRIENDS.
A write MOUND.
A gentleman About to make
A trip HI eea, was begired to take
Commissions for a dozen frlei ds ;
One wants a watch; another sends
For wine.—“ Avery special cask ;
And—if it is not too much to ask—
-Bome choice oiarare; a box will do;
Or. while vou're at it. purchase two 1”
Another friend would like a pair
Of boots —• 'I hey’re so much cheaper there;
A lady friend would have him bny
Some lace*,—“lf they’ie not too high
Another wants a box of gl-uee _
“French kida you know, are real loves !”
Thus one wants this ; another, that ;
A hook a bonnet, or a hat;
Enough to make the moody man
(So high their “small commissions" ran
In tale and bulk) repent that he
Had ever thought | 0 tro ss the sea !
Moreover.—be it here remarked, —
Before the gentleman embarked,
His friends, for fear he might forget
Their lit le enands. plainly set
Their w Ishce down in black and white ;
A sensible proceeding—quite ;
But—as it happened—not a friend
(With one exception) thought to send
The ready money, and to say.
“See ! here's the cash you'll have to pay I”
He embarks; sees Paris. Rome.
And other cities : 'ben comes home
Well pleased with much that m t his eye;
Bn. havii g somehow, tailed to buy
A single thing for any friend.
Except the one who thought to send
The wherewithal. Well need l say
That soon his neighbors come to pay
Their greetings at his safe return.
And charming health ; and (also) learn
Abont their little errands— w hat
For each the travi iter had got f
“By Jove I” he said, “it makes me sad
To think what wretched luck I had !
For as at sea 1 sat one day
Arranging in a proper way
The papers you so kindly sent.
A gale arose, an off they went
Into t :e ocean ! nor could I
Remember an. hi you bade me. buy I”
“But.“ giumbled one, * if. that wire sn,
How comes it, sir, yon chanced to know
What this man's et rami wasf IbrAe
Has got what he desired, we see !”
“Faith ! so lie has,—beyond a doubt I
And this is how It' ame about :
His memorandum chanced to hold
A certain sum of solid gold :
And thus the paper by its weigh*.
Escaped the other's windy fate !''
Last spring a half drunken
fellow asked permission to leave an
old overcoat and worn-out valise in
an Indianapolis grocery, which was
accorded, and ho departed with the
intention of coming back in a few
hours. He never returned. When
the 1 ndlord nbuilt during the past
summer, the bundle was tested into
an old warehouse, and afterward into
the the wagon yard, where it. lay for
weeks. Last Saturday an old razor
was seen protruding from the valise,
and an examinination revealed within
the valise a Bible marked “Geo. Mil
ler,” several valuable draft made
payable to his order and still good,
besides a large quantity of green
backs.
BSL. A London girl, who advertised
recently for a husband, requested her
host of correspondents to be present
in the pit at the Drury Lane theatre,
on the following evening, dressed in
a blue coat, white pantaloons, and
scarlet waistcoat, and immediately on
the conclusion of the first act to stand
upon the benches, flourish a white
handkerchief in one hand, and apply
a glass to the right eye with the other.
When the curtain fell, fifty men from
giddy youth to giddier old age, stood
up in the prescribed uniform, and
began the eyeglass and handkerchief
performance, amid convulsions of
laughter from a large portion of the
spectators, who were in the secret.
A friend assured Mark Twain
that it was policy to feed a cold and
starve a fever. He says: “I had both.
So I thought it best to fill myself up
for the cold, and let the fever starve
awhile. In a case of this kind I sel
dom do things l>y halves —I ate pretty
heartily. I conferred my custom
upon a stranger, who had just opened
his restaurant on Cortland street,
near the hotel, that morning, paying
so much for a full meal. He waited
near me in respectful silence until I
had finished feeding mv cold, when he
inquired if the people about New
York were much afflicted with colds.
I told him I thought they were. He
then went out and took in his sign.”
A Kentucky editor received
the following note from a subscriber,
asking that a false notice of his death
might be corrected: Ser 1 notis a few

A good way to restore a man
apparently drowned, is to first dry
him thoroughly insido and out, and
then clap a speaking trumpet to his
ear and inform him that his mother
iu-lavv is dead.
Why James, my son! Is it
