Gignilliat. Esq . we understand, will represent the de icndauts. I mprti Yemenis of the Past Smmm r. Sftroi'Hy after the establishment of the Ga zette we found occasion, in the evidences of enterprise and prosperity visible iu tbe busi ness and town of Darien, to congratulate ojir selves in the selection of this place in which to publish onr journal. But we hardly an ticipated such an energetic and abundant continuance of such visible signs as have fol lowed during the last six months- -mouths of ordinary stagnation in all branches of bus iness. During the six months closing with the 3lst oi'October, there have commenced, completed or are now undergoing the work of constriction in this town upwards of ten new buildings; prominent and most conspic uous among these is the handsome three story frame building being built and nearly completed by Mr. Burr Winton. architect and contractor, for Messrs. Young & Lang don. and J. K. Ghirke, ente-prising timber merchants and among the largest and most energe'ie business firms in onr town: which budding is to be used l v them as offices. This building is surmounted with a Mansard roof and finished in a s'yle of lasteiul orna mentation which reflects credit upon the architect, and which would adorn ai y site in any city. Occupying a conspicuous place upon the business thoroughfare of the town it attracts the attention and admiration nf every traveller and sojourner in our midst. Next in importance to this building we have the improvements made 1 y Messrs Wilcox ,V Cl-urchill upon the building so long and popularly occupied by them on Broad stieet. This building lias been raised i story, exten ded in length, replastered and renovated throughout; changes rendered necessary to accommodate the largely increased business of a deserving business firm. This however is not the only work inaugurated by this firm; for a little to the north of their stand they have erected a large building 65x40 feet, which is intended for use as a public hall. Darien has long felt tin need of such a buil ding for concerts, fairs, lectures, dances, and other uses, and the citizens feel justly grateful t,i the enterprise of the gentlemen who have sought, to supply this need, and look forward with pleasnt anticipations to the (Jay when they m ivfitly and happily eliris ten the building with Altnmaha water, in honor of expected gr.ests from our neighbor ing city of. magnificent proportions, hospi tality. an 1 shall we say it, handsome women. There could be no mere l’tting dedication, in addition to these improvements tlieie have been built comfortable private resi dences by Messrs. W. A. Way, Tlios. Dixon. Dr. Baker. Dr. Kenan, ml John A. Phi Hips whilst many improvements have been made by oilier citizens upon their residences These improvements were nil commenced early in the summer and were just nearing ■cmplelion when again is heard the sound o hammer and saw in behalf nf Mess s. Cole man A Cos lint, a now firm, who have cas' heir fortune with us and who commenced thk construct ion of a large two s'ory build ing which is r.ow completed and occu pied bv them as a s*o a. This building was '•oustrucied under the superintemlance of Mr. ■'Arrmldr'mi architect’ of superior taste md judgment, who, during ash< rl residence hi onr community bus made for himself hosts if friends. This building was hardly raised when again we saw signs of preparation on the part of Messrs. A. A I!. Strain, in the purpose of making their large and oommo- Jo-pt tabby I nildiiigfire-proof. Not content with this, however, they have rough plaster ed the exterior of their building in imitation .I stone blocks, then by adding anew attrac tion to their favoiite stand. While these latter improvements are being made a large and disastrous fire oecured, which destroyed nearly an entire block of buildings in the business centre of onr town. This fire left bare an area of land propor tionately x. renter to tbe vest of the business section than did the disastrous fires which recently occurred in Boston and Chicago. But with an enterprise like that which ani mated the citizens of those cities, onr people went prom ptly to work and already three large buildings over a portion ot the ground have been erected in place of those destroy ed, mid another commenced. Upon our river front they have not been idle, for onr enterprising friend Townsend has neatly completed anew wharf upon which he will erect a large warehouse 00x30 t.vt for the accommodation of our Savannah and up-river stoimeis;—whi'e just opposite the city and upon General's Island Mr. A. S Barnwell has erected a Rice Mill 30x00 feet, which is now in full blast nod has been used the present season for thrashing out the crop made upon that island. Passing hut a lit th way hevoud the limits of onr town we find Messrs. Young A Lanpdon replacing the eu gin*s and machinery in their large saw mill on the Low; r Bluff, with new and improved machinery which will vastly increase their capacity for manufacturing lumber. Pass ing again but a little way further on we find a pleasant innovation made upon the old t s tanlishcd style of architecture in the elegant private resid -nee built by Mr. Sutton for Captain J T. Clancy. This departure from ancient ideas testifies to the good taste and judgment of the owner, for which he is gen erally commended, lire long we hope to find some further evidences of improved taste in the acceptance of a plan tor anew Court House, for the building of which pio posals have been solicited. Surely these are evidences of the energy and prosperity of the citizens of our little city lit tie in size and unpretentious, but yet transacting a business as a seaport sec c >nd only to Savannah, and ns a Timberaud Lumber port second only to Pcus icolu. AC.uiD-C.ipt. November 12th r IB7I. Darien as a W inter I’osort for Northern Travellers. Is there any reason why Darien should not reap its share of tile benefits to be derived from the annual Northern migration to the South? We answer, none, if onr enterpri sing citizens will but lake bold nf the sub ject and work it up with the intelligence and energy which they have evinced in other lirections. We really possess a greater number of natural advantages than can he justly claimed for any other locality. Our climate is a happy mi a* between the sharp frosts of Aikeu on the one hand and the enervating lien's of even many winter days ill Florida oil the other. We have pleasant drives and woods for those who love to wander away the happy days in sylvan retreats, with outlooks upon sea and sky from grassy nooks and live-oak groves, that cannot be surpassed iu Florida or elsewhere. We are just far enough from the Atlantic to rea > all of its benefits with out incurring the chilling North East blasts, which smite moie exposed situations like Jacksonville and St. Augustine. Onr stores are now filled with golden oranges I.’ mi tbe groves of Butler’s Island and other surroun ding localities. The Altamaba River and low lands supply an abundance of snipe and wild duck shooting, the pine lands behind the city abound with wild turkeys and quail, while we w ill stake "Blackbeatd” ami •■Sapelo” for fish and dear against ‘Mat-on ers’* or any other fabled isle on tbe Florida coast. Added to these natural advantages are ex ecilent ohm eh and school privileges and a refined local-society In the midst of onr prosperity ns a lumber port we have not heretofore felt the necessity of reaching out for other sources of revenue. But the pres ent depve-isiort in that branch of industry suggests the necessity of diversyting our pur suits and making our community independ ent of any one occupation. The New f’lio! Beal Ethel. Through the courtesy of Capt. Geo, Crane, one of our best and most successful pilots, and also one of the owners of tlie new’ boat, w’e bad the pleasure of boarding -her a few days since. The Captain took parti-nlar pains in showing us all through her. and w must say that we found her elegantly fitted tip. Her comfortable staterooms shows that there was no lack of money--for everything ’*uul the appearance of comfort and elegance She is very complete and in our opinion she is the finest yacht we have ever seen on this coast, and is certainly an ornament to our waters. She has commenced plying on our waters as n pilot boat. The ‘'Young America” which lias been here for some time, still holds her own, and with her e'ever owners, she must be as suc cessful in the future as she has been in the oust. Success to the two boats and all of our pilots. flgg" It is said that Charlie Harris, that three thousand dollar thief, was seen in the city during the week. We guess Charlie is •it the bottom of those robberies committed last week. Why don’t, the proper authori ties have this thief arrested and brought to •.needy trial? By a little exertion we think this thief can be caught. We -are not at all surprised at these midnight rnbberips when a thief like Charlie Harris is allowed to walk our streets at night, unmolested. It would not surprise ns at any time to see this bold thief walking into town sporting a couple of gold watches and a tine walking cane. Can you blame Charlie Harris? \Ve think not. He stole three thousand dollars and was not punished, why has he not the light to steal something else ? Broad Rtreet was enlivened a few days ago at the sight if a runaway mule and wa gon. It appears that, the owner of the wag on left a little colored boy in charge. The little mule took fright and inn but the boy hnng to (lie reins like death to a siek chick en. Fortunately there was no injury sns talued by the bov. the mule or ilie wagon. The contested election on the part of Caj tain A. S. Barnwell, lias closed, but Rev. G Campbell has given Capt. Barnwell > attorney notice oi his intention to take testi mony on Monday 23d. to show that Cap’aiu Barnwell : >nd his suppoiters intimVv <ed vo ters and bribed men to for him. We would lure state that Capt. Barnwell was not iu tbe county on tlie day of election. ,T*S~ Three men tin and to brake into friend Trunuoll’ii store, at No. 1 Tuesday night, tint were unsuccessful. The return day of Mclntosh Superior Court having past, the Attorneys of our c ity can be seen at all hours of the day. in their offices, waiting for something to turn up. The Clerk of the Superior Court of -Mir county sivs the coming court will pre sent the heaviest appearance docket ever Known in this county; and yet the lawyers are complaining of dull times. psy~ We have been enjoyiug delightful I weather tiie whole week.
