This is all right, but would it not be bet

and hare those which will not contain
water fixed up so that in case of need
water can be had. Too many engines
and no water will be as ineffectual in ex

water from the well and pour on a back-

ceived at the Wareliouses in Americas,
daring the past season, amounts to 25,
380; this is independent of between 5000
and 10,000 bales that were shipped per
railroad from this point which were not
entered at the warehouses. A few farm
ers in the county are still holding some
of their cotton for a better price.

Building anil Loan Association.
*o. 2.
These Associations are organized with
a limited amount of stock, the number of
shares depending upon the size of the
city wherein it is located. Americas would
require one with from 1,500 to 2,000l
shares at one dollar each.
Now, suppose that we had such an as
sociation here, authorized to issuefifteen
hundred shares at one dollar each, and
all the stock taken. Here we would hare
$1,500 a mouth or $18,000 a year dishorn
ed for the improvement of the city, as it
would all go to build new houses or buy
those already built. I kn -w of nothing
that would benefit the city more with ro
little individual outlay. Every month
$1,500 would 'die put up at auction and
sold to the highest bidder and any one
having fifteen shares would be entitled
to bid; the highest bidder would be
awarded the loan or advance of $1,600
loss the amount bid as premium. He
would be required to take fifteen more
shares, making the total amount to be
paid into the Association by him $30 a
month, which goes to liquidate the loan,
and in about five years the whole amount
will be paid. In other words in five years
he will have bought and paid for a home
cos tin f' him Fifteen Hundred Dollars
with the money he otherwise would have
paid out for rent and had nothing to
show for it. J. F.

Who Killed Gssxbal Hixdjiax?—We Lave
in our possession a letter from a correspondent,
giving the reason why General Hindman was
killed, and the name of the person who did it.
We are compelled to decline its publication,
upon the ground that it would give
notoriety to an injured woman whose cop U
now full to overflowing. The writer or tho letter
ates that Hindman was killed by the husband
of the lady whose reputation and happiness he
had destroyed, and that his informant wl*U
make affidavit to this fact. We think the
of the party and the affidavit should bo made and
furnished to the authorities. This course would
place the crime where it belongs, and relieve the
public mind from the mystery now thrownaround
his murder. We donbt however, it the person,
that it is charged killed Hindman, was brought
to trial, could be oonvieted, if the wrongs stated
con’d be brought before an Arkansas Jury.—

HEX’ Tiio “unkindest cut” that Con
gress has yet given to the President was
its refusal to prolong its session at his re
quest If another instance of this kind
can be adduced in onr history, it must
have occurred long ago. The reason of the
Presidnet’s request was the apprehended
effect of the European war upon onr
commerce—a matter about which the
Executive Jidministratioa ought to be re
garded as especially well informed. And
yet neither branch of Congress would
comply with so reasonable a request of
the President.
Cost or the Wax nr Ecaorx.—At the Interna
tion d Power Congress held lately at Lausanne,
the snggestivs fact was elicited that (3,500,000,-
000 is the annual cost of the war system of Eu
rope, and that (1C out of every (20 of tho tax- s
are now employed to sustain that folly. What
a stupendous cancer upon national resources.
Yot it is easier to discover the evil than the
remedy. Victor Hugo thinks that if republics
were established, wars would cease to exist, A
monstrous absurdity, contradicted flatly by the
whole history of ancient and modem times.
The greed and joalouaies of nationalities which
lead to wars are as great under one form of
government «s another, as onr own history

Editor Republican : I wish to call tho
attention of tho citizens of this city to
some of the benefits to bo derived from a
“ Building and Loan Association. ”
Nearly every city of tho size of ours
either already has or are about to have
organization of this kind, and I am
satisfied that we will not be “ behind the
times ” if the people will but give the
subject that attention which it deserves.
As an inveatment to a man of capital it
will pay better and afford better security
than any other investment that ho can
make. And for the man of limited means,
it is a great blessing, as it wonld enable
him to buy or build a house and pay for
it in about five years, with the money
that he now pays for rent—that is, the
Association loans him the money to bay
house. Now, instead of paying $25.00
r 830.00 a month for rent he pays it to
the Association, and in about five years
he ha) paid back, with interest, to the
Association what it loaned him, and has
a home of his own. In my next I will
give yon an illustration of the workings
of such nn institution. J. F.
