On Wednesday occurrod ono of those
delightful Occasions which gives zest
to tho life of the young, and change
the monotony of everyday life in-
to a thrill of pleasure.* A most enjoy*
able dance was given by some of the
young men of Americus, at the A. L.
I. Armory. Cutro’a string band of
Albany wis on hand, and discoursed
the music to which the merry feet of
the dancers kept time. The young
ladies of Americas, of course looked
surpassingly beautiful, as the Ameri
cus young ladles always do. Many
of the costumes were quite hand
some, nay, all them were beautiful,
and the forms they enclosed, and the
faces of their wearer's added to the
enchantment of the scene.
The dancing was engaged in untC
quite a late hour, when all retired
from the ball-room, delighted with
the evening's entertainment, and
bent upon a renewal of the pleasure

GEORGIA’S WEALTH.
AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION
WITH A GEORGIA CON
TRACTOR.
A Republican reporter met Mr.
J). A. Mayo a few days ago, and put
the usual conundrum to him, “What
do yon know?” “Oh” said he with
busy smile, “plenty of work in the
contracting business. The people
are becoming more and more Infavor
of brick work, and of course that gives
just so much the more to do.”
‘Why are they taking to bricks
and mortar?”
It is natural that they should. If
they didn’t, |it would bo unusual.
You have heard the old saying that
I tome was not built in a day. Well,
Rome, and all other localities was first
furnished with only temporary wood
en structures. As they progressed in
intelligence and in wealth, Rome,
and the other nations, gradually dis
placed their temporary buildings for
those far grander in structure and far
more lasting Jn their nature. It is so
with our people. Look around you.
Our forests have been prostrated and
destroyed to afford temporary habi
tation. Our country is in its infancy's
orln its first -tage of development.
This is the age of wood, tho ago of
brick and of granite is dawning.
“Well?"
‘So you see it is only natural that
the people, after the transitory pe
riod, should l>ogin to plan habita
tions that will not decay in a genera
tion, but will last as long as time it
self.”
“But Georgia is not prepared is
she, for this transition? Has she
all of the materials?”
Indeed she has. She makes as
fine bricks out of her red old hills as
l>e found anywhere around; she
an inoxhaustible supply of gran
ite in her Stone Mountain and her
hills of North Georgia, and even the
lime, which is not generally known,
is the finest in the world.”
•‘Is it possible!”
•‘Yes, and now I am going to give
you a piece of information that may
bo news to you and your readers:
‘What Is It?”
‘Of course you know the limo of
which tho mortar used in tho Court
House is composed. Did you over
notice it particularly?
•‘I believe not.”
“Well, tho mortar in that building
as hard now, If not harder, than it
was after first drying, when the
bricks were laid. If yon take a chisel,
you would not find it an easy task,
with great force and dexterity,
to make tho slightest impression on
it, it adheres to the brick with such
tenacity.
‘Is It Georgia lime?”
‘No, but it is the Celebrated Thom-
aston Lime of Maine, and is consid
ered tho best in the world. But
superior as it undoubtedly is, as
from that used in the Court
House, It is not better than wo have
right here in Georgia, nay at our very
doors. The mortar used in tho store
house occupied by Thornton Wheat-
ley Is made from Georgia limo and
has not its equal anywhere.’
“Where do you find it?”
“Now, where do you suppose?
Right down In Leo county. There
spot in Lee, about four miles from
tho little place called Adam’s Station)
’tho Southwestern Railroad, in
which this limo unsurpassed any
where, lies in inexhaustible beds.
There are millions and millions of the
Lime Rocks, enough to furnish limo
to tho world for a century.”
‘Why has it never been worked?”
That I cannot tell. It U partly
because of ignorance of the resources
glorious old state; and partly
from want of capital. Our people are
poor, agriculturists by nature and
depressed financially. However, I
believe it is only a question of time,
and a very short time at that, when
somo of our enterprising Capitalists
will seize this opportunity to coin
mints of money.”
“Yon say it is superior to that usu
ally used?”
“Vastly, sir, vastly. The lime
shipped from abroad, at an expense
it is unless to pay, lacks tho quality
that these lime beds have in abun
dance. As I said, the only limo that
bo compared to it, is theThomas-
ton Lime from Maine, and that is far
more costly, and not a whit better.
‘And you have confidence in the
future of the lime interests of Geor-

Burning of Dr. R. C. Black s Barn.
Abont 12 o’clcck on Tuesday night
last, the fire alarm bell was heard in
tho city, and tie location of the fire
discovered to lie too far from
the city, for the fire department to be
of any advantage, though the boys
repaired to tho engine houses, ready
for service. The fire was/ound to be
the barn of Dr. R. C. Black, about
three-fourths of a mile from the court
house, in the northwest part of the
city. Tho building, together with
four or five hundred bushels at corn,
thousand or two pounds of fodder,
a large quantity of field peas, farming
impJIements.a fine calf, and a number
goats were destroyed. A valuable
w was also burned very badly.
1 here Is no doubt but that it was the
work of an incendiary, as tracks were
found leading from the building to an
adjacent field. This is a severe loss
to the Doctor, and it is to be hoped
that the guilty villiana may yet be
caught, and severally dealt with. If
a good reward was offered for the ap
prehension of the perpetrator of
this vile act, we have no doubt he
might be arrested.
The firemen ol Americas have fully
decided to have their tournament.
Not only this; they have derided to
make it tho biggest day Americus
has ever seen. This is os It should
be. There are many important fea
tures of the occasion which have not
been settled. For instance, while we
have tow good hotels, the accommo
dation will be terribly deficient for the
crowd which we have every reason
to expect will be on hand. Arrange
ments will have to be made to re
ceive the influx of our visitors. The
companies have bad printed a neat
invitatiou, which will be sent to
different companies', Inviting their
attendance; Eofanla, Cuthbert, Al
bany, Thomasville, Brunswick, Ma-
i,Bamsville,Griffin, Hawkinsville,
Montezuma and other places. We
will have at least ten visiting com
panies; each company bringing at
least one hundred persons, including
their friends. This will make one
thousand firemen and their friends
from abroad. Hundreds, of course,
will come of their own motion, from
other places, and Americus will be
overflowed with a jostling, festive,
good natured crowd of strangers.
Some of the companies who will
attend are noted for their skill in con
tests. The Hawkinsville company
made the best average at the im
mense tournament in Macon last year,
closely pressed by Griffin,
while Defiance No. 5 of Macon is tho
most dashing company in the State,
jerking their reel over the ground in
considerably less time than an ordin-
can go with no incum
brance. The tournament will take
place on April 29th, with the folow-
ing rules, regulations and tests:
FIRST TEST.
The Reel to be stationed one hun
dred yards from Engine; at a given
signal (dropping of sand bag) squad
will carry Reel to Engine, attach, and
lay one hundred feet of Hose, discon
nect, attach Pipe and play water to
Flagman, who will be stationed one
hundred and twenty five feet from
Engiue. No Reel will be allowed in
contest weighing less than nine hun
dred pounds. The weight of light
Reels may be supplimented with
extra Hose. No Reel allowed to carry
less than two hundred feet of Hose.
One man allowed for every seventy-
five pounds of weight, not including
Plugman and Pipemen. At least foot
screw threads required on all coup
lings and Pipe. Companies whose
couplings have less than tho required
threads, the Americus Fire Depart
ment will famish Hose. Couplings to
be detached for Pipe most draw ten
pounds.
First prize, $100 in gold. Second,
prize, $40 in gold.
A prize of $25 in gold will be given
for best time to Engine on first test.
SECOND TEST.
One hundred feet of Hose in posi
tion, disconected at Engine, center
and at Pipe. Squad of six men to run
one hundred yards to Engine, connect
to Engine, mako centre connection,
attach Pipe and play water to Flag
man, who will be stationed one hun
dred and fifty feet from Engine. Same
signal as in first test.
First prize, $00 in gold. Second
prize, $25 in gold.
Each company will bo allowed
thirty minutes in which to complete
both tests.
Two judges and ono time-keeper
will be allowed each company.
All protests will be decided by the
officers of the Americus Fire Depart-’
ment.
No allowance for accidents except
failure of sand bog to drop.
Executive officers of the Depart
ment will be excluded from the squad.
No engine is allowed to have more
than eighty pounds of steam on at the
time of the test.
NOTES.
The track will be built on Forsyth
street,opposite Glover’s Opera House.
Wide Awake and Mechanics were
out praticing on Wednesday last, and
made some very respectablo runs.
Sore ankles and stiff joints will be in
order now.
We would suggest that a committee
be appointed on hotel accommoda
tion, whose duty shall be to furnish
list of hotels and boarding houses,
and how many they can accommo
date.

On Jordan's Stormy Banks.
An Americtn who recently vi-dted
the River Jordan says he never saw
in this country a stream so vile. It is
less thau eighty feet wide, less than ten
feet deep, and as dirty ss can be. Irs cur
rent is as swift as a mill-race. He
stood abont half an hour on “Jor
dan’s stormy banks,” and saw all he
cared to of it. The banks are called
“stormy” because of the millions of
mosquitos that live there and storm
people who are fools enough to travel
hundreds of miles to see the river.
