THE CANNIBAL MAN.
THE LATEST FASHIONS.
nv MBS. I). M. JORDAN.
IlV iil.out an ancient cannibal man,
Who came from an island near Japan;
A cannibal man who was tough and old,
When Unmuni bought him and paid in
gold;
And whether the man or Barouin was
sold,
Yon will learn in this solemn story.
Ilia teeth were sharp ns the teeth of a saw,
And he had two rows in his lower jaw,
Filed and |>olishod anil ready for use
On any customer full of juice,
Or the first baby that lay around loose.
For babies were all his glorv.
A sad mistake for a cannibal hand
To come to an almost babyless land,
For babies are strangely out ot style;
You may travel the country many a mile
Without the light of a baby-smile,
Unless with the Dutch and Irish.
Hut Bnrutim kept his man in n cage,
Though he felt quite sure, at the fellow's
nge,
That his cannibalistic feats were tlor.o,
Unless he should cat a man for fun ;
And once, on the sly, lie fed hint one,
Which wasn't a wise proceeding.
For, having tasted a white man's meat,
lie was always ready to kill and cat—
And lit looked with longing at rosy girls,
Who eatne to the show in shining ctir!«,
With cheeks like peaches and teetli like
pearls,
Aud he wondered how they tasted.
It happuned once when the llcsli was
weak.

Alas '. alack ! what a terrible omen :
It teaches to women ns well as showmen,
That whether a cannibal, Greek or Ho
man,
Bo ever so old, you can't trust no man.
THE DOLMAN LAST POLOXAAISE
is a new garment brought out in Paris
when the season is advanced, with a
view to deciding the overdress of spring
suits. This is a composite garment,
having the principal feature of the
Col man—its winged sleeves—the fa
vorite vest front and the back dra
pery of polonaif.c. We commend this
design to ladies who are impatient to
begin making the cashmere, alpaca
and woolen suits of their spring ward-
rolies. The front of this polonaite has
a Louis Quinze vest long enough to
have small square pockets (or else
picket flaps) just below the waist.
Tlte front slojics away gracefttll from
the vest, showing trimming on the
front breadth of the skirt.

“KING BABY.”
His sceptre is a rattle,
His throne is mother's arms;
He reigns a tiny tyrant,
In all Ids dimpled charms ;
Yet round his royal presence
Our loving heart entwine :
Dictator of the cradle,
And king by right divine!
Whatever be Ids mandates,
No courtiers dare rebel.
His mother’s chief of the household,
Prime minister as well 1
In yon perambulator,
Ills downy car of state,
Exacting, rosy monarch.
What triumphs on him wait!
In purple case and splendor,
Imng, long he seeks to reign;
All hints of nose disjointed
He smiles at with disdain!
Alas! that royal greatness
Should ever be disowned :
Here comes a tiny stranger—
King Baby is dethroned.

A Mysterious Discovery.—The
discovery of a human skeleton supend-
ed from a Ireant in the attic of the Post
Office building in Albany, N. Y. t has
occasioned great excitement in that
vicinity, the complete mystciy in which
the affair is enveloped adding a dark
glamour to the revolting revelation.
The discovery was entirely accidental,
one of the Post Office clerks having
conic upon the remains while in search
of sonic old papers that had been stow
ed away in the room. On the floor
was seen a withered arm and close by
were found other portions of the de
cayed body. In an old box near by a
large quantity of cinders with charred
hones was discovered, giving evij
it is thought, of a deliberate atl
burn tbo botlv. The skull
sawed open anti the bones wei
wise mutilated. On examining the
chamber where the remains were dis
covered, abundant evidence was pro
cured to show that a gentleman by the
name of Dr. Kcphiul been living there
unbeknown to other occupants of the
building, and that lie had either been
murdered or committed suicide bv
luuigiug himself. Further investiga
tion brought to light a cabinet in
which was found a large quantity of
bottles containing chemicals and some
title deeds, denoting that the deceased
was a man of largo projierty. Nothing |
is known of the ease further than what
this chance discovery has made evi
dent, and measures have been taken
the waist
is tight-fitting; the back lias side bodi
ces and sufficient fullness is introduced
below the waist to make the skirt hang
in plain, almost horizouzal folds across
the immure. There arc plain coat
sleeves and the Dolman attachment is
added. This costume is usually made
with a cashmere, camel’s hair or Sf-fl-
liennc ]H>!o)iai*e over a silk skirt. It
may Ire also made entirely cashmere
or offoulardlane with gros-grnin folds
on the flounces. This is very hand
some f6r the present season in dark
Pompeiian red cashmere, with gor*-
ijrain vest, pockets, cuffs and trim
mings.
RUMORS ABOUT SPRINT. STYLES.
Modi.itc.i predict that there will be
no decided changes in the present con
venient and graceful costumes ; novel
ties will be confined to the small de
tails of the toileUe. The potonaifc will
continue in favor though various
changes will be rung upon it. Double-
breasted pnlonai*<r-i worn over muslin
habit skirts will be seen, and revert
will be a feature of these over-dresses.
Sashes in their present modified form
will also lie retained. Dress skirts for
the street, rumor says, will be comfor
tably short.
INDIA camel’s hair.
The finest fabrics shown for spring
pobmaiw* is India cijmel’s hair, made
so light and thin as to lie of scarcely
perceptible weight, and almost as cool
as muslin. It is in all the stylish
shades of blue gray, eeru peacock,
remht and bererline—a gray, with rosy
lines. The same fabric is also shown
with the twill reversed to form stripes.
VIGOGNE, ETC.
Viijnjnc is fine wool in its natural
gray shades,, woven into a light soft
fabric, now very popular for travelling
dresses. It resembles an old fashioned
material called debeje, but is finer and
more costly. Undressed cashmere is
a roughly twilled fabric that forms soft,
graceful drapery. It is only found in
unbleached buff and gray tints.
I.ACE AND BROAD CLOTH STRIPES.
In the woollen goods just described,
in gouge** and kindred materials, a
great many open strij c* are introduc
ed, pcr.ty to relieve the monotony of
solid colors, but especially to make
heavy fabrics light enough for warm
weather. These striped fabrics are
used for overdress and flounces, while
a similar stud of solid color is chosen
for the skirt. Brocaded stripes, with
small figures wrought in a dark shade,
arc also used to enliven plain sur
faces.
TURKISH TOWELING.
A new, rough linen, resembling
Turkish toweling, is made lor thinner
than that worn hitherto, and is smooth
on the wrong side. The best patterns
are an inch wide stripes of darker
brown on ecru grounds. These stripes
look like sponge, and the material is
called sponge-striped linen. It is pre
dicted this linen will be a fashionable
summer costume, as it was favorably
received in Europe last year.
GLACE MOHAIRS.
For serviceable spring dresses there
is nothing better than the pure glare
mohairs. They are pretty, silvery
gray, smooth, lustrous surface, will
endure hard wear, and do not shrink
from dampness. Very fine plain
grounds are preferred, but damask
brorhc figures are also shown in ela
borate designs, woven, in heavy winter
goods. The beaver molrnir retains its
well deserved popularity, and is almost
as beautiful as silk.
STRIPED BLACK GRENADINES.
T:e newts*, black grenadines have
lace like stripes, over an inch wide,
with plain, smooth grenadine stripes j
between. Various other stripes arc j
shown—square-meshed canvas stripes, |
i with black grenadine, or brocaded 1
stripe 3 , or, handsomer still, repped 1
stripes, like line Siclicmie. l’lain I
'black is preferred, but sometimes a ’
color is introduced in these goods.
The cheap grenadines are in as stylish ;
patterns as more extensive fabrics.
White grenadines, partly cotton, are
| for inexpensive dresses for indoors.
| These have brocaded stripes of light
color.
BATISTE.

mer reapaears, accompanied with ruf
fles embroidered with white for trim
ming skirts rnd pofonaxe*. Entitle*, to

suits, are striped with white honey-

Rv pcrinisaion, we here state that Milton Mathews, Esq., mul his *on, C. W.
| Mathews, Esq., both of Jackson county, planted, last year, 23 acres in Cotton,
■*” Fertilized it with the DICKSON COMPOUND, and made on said 23 acres 25
Bales ot Cotton. We are jdso authorized to L'ive their plan, and who wish can try
it: They open one furrow putting about 100 pounds to the acre, and running
around said furrow and cover it up. Putting about 100 pounds more on each side
of the first and covering it all up. Tnis makes 300 pounds to the acre. When
you plant the seed, run a furrow on the middle row of the three distributes. The
tap roots run through the middle row, the smaller roots runs out into each of the
other two distributes, and lienee one bale to the acre is made. In our judgment,
it is the best plan in use.
