The Awful End or tlie Baby Farmers of
Naples—The Necks of Two Murder
esses Bared to the Axe—Rose Porro
and Margarite Coraldi Expiating their
Unparalleled Crimes.
The two Imby farmers of Naples,
whose appalling crimes have already
been narrated in the volumes of the
North-East Georgian, recently
paid the penalty for their deeds
ou the block in the Castle d’Nove,
near Naples. The prisoners were
brought before a judge and jury,,
and after a brief trial, during which
the n.ost i evoking details of their
terrible crime were elicited, both Rose
Porro and Margarite Coraldi were, sen
tenced to death. The scene in the
court room on their being pronounced
guilty was effecting in the extreme, the
women sobbing hysterically and kneel
ing in the -lock to supplicate for mercy
j A Naples letter thus describes the exe
cution :
Early yesterday morning, when
hardly a soul was astir in the narrow
and boisterous thoroughfares of Naples,
an ominous looking vehicle stood "
front of the Prefect’s chamber, near
the Chiaja. On the uppermost floor
of the prison is the chapel, where the
condemned women were attending
mass—their last mass—and the mourn
ful strains of the “Miserere,” chanted
by the Sisters in their choir, could l>e
heard gloqpily wafting through the
long coridors. The prisoners, still in
black, knelt near the altar, and, at the
appointed time, received their last com
munion.
TO THE EXECUTION.
Towards half-past six the prisoners,
flanked by an escort of ten gendarmes
and preceded by three clergymen,
moved from the chapel to the van in
front of the prison- door. The van
contained the prisoners, the chaplain
and two assistants, two Sisters of
Charity, the prelect and his lieutenant
and the usual guards on the outside.
While the van was rolling over the
■pavement on its way to the Castle
d’Novo, which is built right on the
edge of the Bay of Naples, many harsh
comments were made fioni groups of
stragglers, while an occasional merciful
one vouehs ifcd nn ejaculation such as,
“The Lord have mercy upon them!”
for well they all knew the mission of the
rusty wheeled black van of the prison.
During the tedious drive the prisoners
praved and sobbed alternately, and
j spoke little and only in whispers to the.
I kind .Sisters of Charity, who never
ceased offering them religious console.-

oner. He raised the axe about one
foot from the neck of Rose Porro by
way of taking aim, and then swinging
it above his head, lie brought the heavy
blade down with all his might, and
THE HEAD 11 ROUTED OVER THE BLOCK.
The trunk rose, nearly a foot and a
half, as if living, by the sudden spas
modic action of the severed nerves. A
litter was immediately at hand, and
the trunk aud head of what was Rose
Porro, the famous baby farmer, were
removed, and Margarite Coraldi was
led to the block. She prayed constant
ly, and did not evince any great fear
until her head was forced on the fa^tl
stand, when she uttered a brief, ner
vous scream. Her head was not com
pletely severed with the first blow. The
skin of the front ot the neck remained
uncut, and the body, springing back,
exposed a ghastly gap which made
every spectator shuijjfcr, and caused
the platform to be smeared witli blood.
A pall was thrown over the body and
its head, and both were removed in a
litter to await, like Porro’s eorpse, bu
rial in unconsccruted ground. The ful
filling of the executioner’s contract was
to wipe and whet the axe lie used, and
replace it in the sqabbard fit for future
emergencies.

Natles, Fehuary 8.—In Septem
ber last two tourists, an Englishman
and an American,' obstinately disre
garding the entreaties of their guides,
insisted upon being lowered down into
the dark caverns immediately under
the orifice of the crater of Mount Ves
uvius, and those daring tourists have
uot since been heard of. When the
news reached Naples that city was
filled with horror, and for weeks suc
ceeding the disaster few tourists ven
tured to the summit of the burning
mountain. Fashionable adventurers,
for whom the icy heights of the Mat
terhorn Mouut Blanc had no deterring
awfulness or horror, winced at the
idea of approaching the mouth of Ves
uvius, after it had so mysteriously be
come the impromptu tomb of two
young men who had not the least mis
giving about their doom.
Recently a similar calamity 'occur
red, and almost under the same cir
cumstances. The victims in this in
stance were Jean Lo Miexu, Belgium,
and Louis Schmidt, of Berne, Switzer
land. The)' were remaining at a re
spectable locanda or hoarding house on
the Chiaja, when a party was formed
to make the ascent together, and it is
strange that on the morning of the
nisht when they started for Resina (a
village at the foot of Mount Vesuvius,
where horses, staffs and guides arc
procured), Schmidt received a letter
from his sister at Genoa, in which she
stated that it would not reach Naples
long in advance of herself. Schmidt
therefore begged his companions to re
lease him from his promise to start
for Resina that night, but as he had
projected the excursion they insisted
upon his going. Schmidt, after mak
ing arrangements with his landlady for
the reception of his sister, started with
his companions on Tuesday night fi r
Vesuvius. They left Resina at one in
the morning so that they might reach
the ha=e of the crater in time to witness
the rising of the sun above the jieaks
of the surrounding Alps and Apen
nines.
Having reached the end of their
romantic journey—the summit of the
volcano- -everything was quiet as upon
some secluded rustic hill, and Le
Micux called upon any of the party to
join him in going down the crater.
