San Fuanci&co, April, 12. — A
courier has arrived here from the lava

Canby and I)r. Thomas were murder
ed by the Modoes yesterday while hold
ing a peace conference.
[SECOND Dl-SPATCn.]
Lava Bed Camp, April 13, via
Ui:eka, April 12.—Yesterday after
noon five Indians and lour squaws
came into our camp and were made
presents of clothing and provisions by
the peace commissioners, and a mes
sage was sent out by the commission
ers asking for a talk this morning at a
point about a mile from our picket
line. I>ater in the evening Bogus
Charley came in and told the picket
tha( he could take his gun, that lie
(Charley) did not intend to go back
any more. The picket brought him
in and took him to the tent of Genera]
Canby, where Charley left his guu aud
remained at the tent of Frank Biddle
during the night. This morning Bos
ton Charley came in and told the com
mission that Captain Jack and five
other Indians would meet the com
mission outside our lines. Boston
Charley and Bogus Charley then
mounted horses aud staitcd for the
lava bed.
About an hour after their departure
General Canby, Dr. Thomas, Mr. A.
B. Mcaclmm and Mr. Dyer, with
Frank Biddle and his squaw for in
terpreters, started for the place ap
pointed. The party arrived at the ap
pointed place and were closely watch
ed by the signal olficer, Lieutenant
Adams, from the signal station on the
hill overlooking our camp. About
half an hour after the party had ar
rived, a cry from the signal station
was heard, sayiug that the Indians had
attacked the peace commissioners, and
that an engagement had commenced
between the Indians and Colonel Ma
son. In a moment the troops were
under arms and deployed as skirmish-
era, under command of Colonel Green
and-pidcra were given to forward
dtabie-quick.
'■ Very shortly after Mr. Dyer re-
ti&^Losd tald us that the Indians
had attacked them, and dial he thought
he was the only one who had escaped.
But in a few moments after Biddle
and his squaw were seen within the
pit&ek line. From him we gather the
fallowing account of how the messaere
commenced: Mr. Mercham made a
short speech to the Indians, followed
by General Canby, and then Dr.
Tluimas. Tlicu Captain Jack madea
speech, asking for Hot Creek and Cot
tonwood, places now occupied by
Fkirehihl and Dorris, for reservations.

Others, turned back and exclaimed,

again aud tired, and General Canby

Editors Northeast Georgian:
We are sorry that we are once more
compelled to lay before the reading
public a reply’to J. O’F., but as he
tired the first shot at the United Friends
of Temperance, we, as its advocates and
and supporters, must nor cau not let
slide the hurling shaft that tends to in
jure our Southern moral institution,
and as ti de blooded Southerners, who
first voted for secession that planted its
name high on the landmark of the fu
ture, we will see our moral institutions
ot temperance sunk into the lowest pits
of oblivion, where seas of whiskey may
roll forever over its fallen gramluer,
before we will submit to negro equality
that the philanthropists of the North
are daily seeking through our moral
Orders to force the stain of fraternity
with our former slaves, by admitting
their elegibility to membership around
our firesides and family circles, which
are embraced in even’ temperance or
ganization.
The suprcinaey of the Grand Lodge
of Good Templars of Georgia, which J.
O’F. rests bis hopes upon, is a mere
shell of fancy when brought to its true
status; owning its subordination to the
R. W. G. Lodge of the world, I.would
ask every thinking mind how can
subordinate body be supreme? “ Ad
mitting tliat Georgia Good Templars
in their Grand Lodge have the supreme
control of elegibility to membership in
•their Order, and Mississippi, North
Carolina, Maryland and other South
ern States have not this supremacy,
and have negro Lodges of Good Temp
lars forced upon them; can J. O’F.,
as a true Southern man, wish this
supremacy, when his brothers who
fought side by side with him iu the late
war, have now this social equality forced
upon them ? Me thinks not, and when
liis warm responsive heart feels thisre-
tio p-rctive glauee, he will leave an
