crptip, paper, published at Athens,
Georgia, announces 1 the 'murder of
General Oanby and the Peace Com
missioner* under the following head
line*: ' " . .,
AN INDIAN MASSACRE!
Captain Jack and warriors *venge the
South by murdering General Canbr,
one of her greatest oppressors,
1 and the Pence Commissioner*.
KEEP THE BALL IN MOTION !
Tliree Chen-* for the Gallant Modoc* l!
The dastardly shameful ness of the
wretch who could find it in hi* heart
to chuckle over such a matter, is in
comprehensible to an enlightened be
ing. * But the editor of the Lynchburg
Republican, (Democratic) shows him
self to be fully as brutal, when he
says:—
*' What n pity we failed to procure
a few regiments of Modoc* for service
in the Confederacy!"
The above, we clipper] from a dirty
little Radical Sheet published in Ma
rion, Va., called the Chronicle. Who
the editor is, we neither know nor
care. Hi* name does not appear.
We dou’t look for anything else, than
such from the “ truly loial.” We ex
pect nothing from a hog but a grunt.
We should not have noticed the article
if we had not found the following in
the Atlanta Sim. We confess, the
Sun suprised us. A paper that has
professed to be intensely Southern,
that once lectured us for voting for
Greely, or rather putting him at our
most head. We could stand such
things from the Rads, hut when the
Sun pitches into us, we would only
exclaim, “ et tu Brute."
Here is what the Sun says:
AN COLT EXPRESSION.
Sometime ago, the Athens Georgian
published the following ugly express
ion:
“An Indian Massacre—Captain
Jack'and Warriors Revenge the South
by murdering General Canby, one of
her Greatest Oppressors, and the Peace
Commissioners—Keep the Ball in Mo
tion! Three Chreers for the Gallant
Modoca.”
' This paragraph has been alluded to
by a gOu«! many papers, and condemn
ed by none more promptly than by
the youthen press. While the cour
age of the Modocs may be admired,
treachery in all cases, and under all
circumstance*, is to be deprecated up
on all good men. We greatly regret
ted the expression of our cotemporary,
as it waa an exhibition of a very ugly
temper.
' We were once enemies of the United
States soldiery, but now that the war
is over, we think it behooves the peo
ple of both sections to cultivate a more
kindly sentiment towards each other.
We cannot live in peace and security
unless we do. While we would urge
the Southern people to stand firmly to
the right, fefusing to concede anything
beyond, we nevertheless would have
them guilty of no exhibition of bad
tamper because of the past. Let us
do our duty that wliatever of wrong
that may lie done, may oome from the
other. «i<l& ‘ .
If the expression is on ugly one, we
can’t help it. We know not how to
beautify it We are not Christiana
enough to love our enemies,—and to
say we regret it, when one of our op-
posers is killed, would be to state what
is not so. The Atlanta Sun has more
of fhe milk of human kimdnesa in its
composition than we have, if it can
forgive the oppressors of our people.
Like the Sun “ we were onoe enemies
of the United States Soldiery,” we
think we are still so. If there is any
change in our feelings, we are not
aware of it. We have about os much
ua for the United States Soldiery, as
the devil baa for holy water.

-Mn. Editor.—In the last Usue of
your paper, under the heading of Gum
‘Springs, you give an aecouut of a pic-
aic, which .you say was given by
‘tboMjkwd Templars. (Omitting the
wbrd * the’ would have been more cor
rect.) You say “ for several weeks
prior to the event, the sole topic of
conversation was the approaching pic
nic of ‘the’ Good Templars;” (here
again the’ word ’ the’ is an error,) for
wtyeh great preparations were made
by * the members, (here again 4 the’ is
•a emir) of the Organisation to ren
der it a grand success. A few mem

the ground that they did not approve
of dancing; but -their ahjeetiun was
overt uled by a large-majority, and was
decided that the pieoic should take
place on the Thursday following.
Editor, the above account
an .ffivao in your paper, would stil

.Your description of the proceedings
connected with the picnic, and espe
cially of the dance, is very flattering,
and no doubt, gratifying to the spirit
ofthe great and grand mastsr of the
Cyclops, * who walketh about as a
roaring -lion seeking whom he may
catch somebody. And as an illustra
tion of this fact, permit me to give you
a very brief account of a dance that
came off in one of the Cities of this
State some 17 or 18 years ago. There
were several individuals all of whom
according to your deflinition, were Cy
clops ; they were fond of dances, and
would frequently meet together and in
order to gratify their inclination and
desire, would freely indulge in some of
its concomitant*. Upon one occasion
they separated late in the night, and
three of them retired to and occupied
the same room in a hotel; the weather
being warm, the windows of the room
was opened twenty-five or thirty feet
above a brick pavement beneath, the
party of three had beeu in the room
hut a short time, when one of them
sprang from his seat and exclaimed
with an expression of rapture—oh
look at the monkey playing the fiddle
—and there is another, and another—
they are dancing—the room is full of
them—some of them have pretty tails—
ah 1 there they go out of the window,
and one of them without a tail—oh!
the beautiful monkey, let me catch it—
and he made a rush for the window
and had it not been for the restraining
interference of one of his companions,
he would most certainly have went
out of the window and fallen to the
pavement beneath.
I was one of the party—and at the
time, what you are pleased to call a
Cyclop,—and all the ministers in or
outside of Heaven could not have in
duced me to believe that there is a
place of torment; or a hell of fire and
brimstone beyond the grave—the
boundary of time, or that eternity
which was its awakening or dawn in
death, the workshops of the God of fire
under Mount ~£tna, Vesuvius or any
other of the chimnies from which es
capes smoke, ashes, lava, or fire not
withstanding. - But while in transit re
turning from the City, I was permit
ted to look and see with two eyes in
stead of one, and to see beyond the
shawdow of a doubt that there was, and
is a hell, and that the association of
all that is vile and miserable of the
damned in hell would be my portion
forever, without I effected my escape.
I was also enabled to realize the foot
that Jesus the Christ was the ouly
means of escape, that he was and is
the only salvation from present, and I
believe, eternal mysery—and the only
security for present, and I believe,
eternal peace and friendship with God.
And now Mr. Editor, permit me to
say in conclusion, tliat at present I am
emancipated and no longer the slave
of the devil, and being free, enjoy the
privilege of looking and seeing with
two eyes instead of one—and thus
looking and seeing, I have not the
shadow of inclination, much less desire,
to be deprived of superior vision in or
der to gratify the God of fire—the God
or supposed good of this world. I am
therefore, no Cyclop.
And although I will not, and wish
distinctively to be understood that I do
not call any man/woman, boy or girl
a monkey, yet, I will and do eay with
my present convictions, purposes and
pursuits, that had I participated in
such a dance os you have <1* scribed, I
would have manifested us much wis
dom and sagacity as any Cyclop or
monkey—beautiful or otherwise, with
or without the decoraton of a tail.
And for the reason that I believe there
is a hell and that every intelligent man
and woman will try and escape it—and
that I also believe there is a Heaven,
and that it is from thenoe alone that I
can receive and enjoy supplies that
satisfies and makes happy my immor
tal nature—and these supplies I do re
ceive, and enjoy the consciousness of
being a child of Gad, and therefore a
Prince of Heaven—and enjoy the con
sciousness that I am faithful in my
obedience to the government given for
my rule in this lifo; that when I shall
be called upon to exchange time for
eternity, that I shall escape hell, and
reach secure, and enjoy forever a Pal-
lace in Heaven.
