INFALLIBLE REMEDY.
The older the Government t>f the
State of Georgia grows, the weaker
the wisdom of Statesmen, and the
-gn*atcr lives the mistaken qualifica
tion to govern. In older days the
political career of an aspirant was
tan ked In’s slow steps of wisdom and a
wed studied, deliberate way,but in the
l’httsi'.X days of the grand old Empi.e,
the d o?s clings to exaltation, and
stamps a single act as aa infallible
. Warrior; lias been forced

overpowered by numbers. We respect
bis courage and determined will. He
• 1ms lieen censured for violating a flag
of truce. . Gcp. .Scott did the same
thing with Osceola. In California the
Indians came in under a flag^pf truce,
and every one shot dowu. When men,
educated in a Christian land, do such
things, can we expect more from an
uneducated savage, particurly when
the example is set by the white race?
Gen. Scott ..was almost deified for
repairing Osceola., It was a noble act
in Scott, but base treachery in this

soldier rank blasphemy.’" We hope
the Government will treat Capt. .Tack
ns a prisoner of war—not as a felon.

daily depending upon this resource for
their daily band, and at a depressed

in this Slate over fifty thousand dollars
l*’r year, and to add the revenue drawn
from these companies for rents, horse
board, city tax and salaries, and we
have a precious email profit to return
to the house offices. These compa

withdraw from the State or raise the
prices of their machines ; if they with
draw, over three thousand Georgians
arc thrown out of employment, and if
they increase their prices, the constitu

Davis and Wheaton, and other officers,
and all the men, rushed from tluyr

north of the house was a grand caval

sergeant Again the valley resounded
with cheers aud yells.
The mounted command was Col
Perry’s; lie had returned from a scout
of twenty-three miles above the mouth
of Willow Creek. At lialft past ten
o’clock this morning the Warm Spring
scouts struck trails, and after a brief
search the Modocs were discovered
Col. Ferry surrounded the Indian
retreat, and his men were bound to
fight. Suddenly a Modoc khot ovlt
from the rocks with a white flag, he
met a Whriji Spring Indian, and sdid
Captain Jack wanted to surender.
T*lirec scouts were sent to meet Jack
He came out cautiously, glancing about
him a moment, and then, as if givin
up all hopes, came forward and liel
out his hands to his visitors. Then
two of his warriors, five squaws
seven (•hildren darted forth and ji
him in the surrender. The command
that made this famous scout was the

t olonel l’errv, c imposed of troops D,
Lieutenant Miller, and iroop II., Ma

Assistant Surgon DeWitt. The guides
were C. Snllman and A. Applegate.
Captain Jack is about forty years old,
five foot eight inches high, and com
pactlv built, full of individuality. Al
though dressed in old clothes, he looks
every inch a chief. He docs not speak
to any one. The Modocs are grouped
in the field near a house and surround
