The introduction to this Police Ga

Ye dusky “Ward of the Nation,”
whom we last reported, resting his
noble form upon a cross-tie of the Air

retreats of the Athenie “Ctwine,"
where flap-jacks” and “taters" were
wont to hold high carnival; ami he
“took up” himself, accompanied with
the habiliments which encircled his
warlike breast, and homeward plod
"his wearv wav."

“Enoch Arden.”
Shaking of the |>erformance of Mr.
Edwin Adams, in Macon, the 7e/c-
graph <fc Messenger says :
Mr. Adams had very clever*support
with Mr. Edwin Browne us Philip
Ray, and Miss Josie Crocker as Annie
Ijciyh, and other members of a large
company. The piece is put ou in
much better style, than is often seen
in Macon. The scenery peculiar to
the piece, is carried with the company,'
and during the performance, some
very handsome sea views are given.—
The tableau “ under a palm tree,”
was a very beautiful one. During the
fourth act, a full-rigged ship appears,
easts anchor, furls her sails, squares
her yards and puts off two boats fully,
manned. It 19 a very beautiful me
chanical contrivance, which greatly
delighted the audience.

me to say how much gratified I am by

The first should be dismissed at oucq.
It is not "necessary for us to retrograde,,
for other nations to leave us" behind ;
simply to stand still Will accomplish it.
As to the second way. people should
be educated where they expect to live;
educated where Hume and not alien
influences will lie exerted upon them.
While in Euroj>e I ascertained that I
could educate my children at about
one half the cost of educating them at
lionfe. I would rather live poor
among those I love in Georgia, than
live surrounded by all the refinements
of luxury in foreign lands. [Applause.]
The second being dismissed, wo
recur to the third as the only reason
able way for us to pursue.
In considering this point the speaker
staled that lie would attempt to tell
them,
1. What the State had done for the
University. 1 1
2. Wliat the University had (lone
lor the State. , !
WIIAT THE STATE HAS DONE.
In 1784. when the counties of Frank
lin and Washington, embracing a large
territory, were laid out, 40,000 acres
of land, inhabited by Indians', wolves
and bears, were given to the Governor
for the endowment of a College. The
land could scarely bo sold or given
away before it \va- given to the College.
Although 40,001) acres were given, the
Trustees only received 35,000 acres,
which they sold to theamnunt of 8150,-
000. The Governor advanced $100,*
000 and took up the notes. The 88,-
00O paid an ually to the College is not
a donation, hut the interest.due by the
State, on a debt.
As an illustration of the times the
speaker said that the ir.emliers of the
General Assembly had to he guarded
by cavalrymen when going to and
from the sent of government. The
State was., anxious, to exchange land
for population. It offered 500 acres
to any kind of a man to start a saw
mill, and 2,000 acres to lie who would
start a forge. Fifty acres we* e offered
to all, black or white, adults and
children.
The* City of Athens has downed

a glowing tribute to th* zeal ftndV-flP

the University, which was greeted with
applause.
He then read a leftsr from Gen. T.
