Sitnms, of this place, had his leg broken on Saturday last by the morning train to Union Point. About two miles from the city, he was dis covered by our veteran engineer, Mr. Janies Galloway, walking down the track. Instantly the whir-tie sounded the alarm, and “down breaks” was given, but ns Mr. Simms was entirely deaf, he was thrown by the cow-catch er high up on the bulk-head and re tained his position until the train was stopped. l)r. R. M. Smith rendered prompt attention, and believes his limb can be saved. M. G. & J. Coiien offer their entire stock of Ladies’ Fall ami Winter Dress Goods, at greatly reduced prices. febl7,2t “The Orchestra.” During the visit of a Dramatic Troupe to our city recently, the lender of the Ochestra alone, made his appear ance. Just before the rising of the drop-curtain, ye above mentioned lead er took his seat in front of the stage and executed a lively tune upon his violin. A young lady in the audi ence to her Beau remarks: “Where is the Ochestra ?” The dashing gallant responds at once: “ He is the Or chestra J" Wc are reminded by this incident of an actor, who came upon the stage to open the play. Noticing the empty benches in his front, be asks the door keeper where is the audience. “He has gone out to take a drink!” was the leady response. Great Bargains at M. G. & J. Cohen’s in Gent’s, Youth’s and Boy’s Clothing. febl7,2t “The Confession.” “Tobiathy Cross,” ye Congo, was so troubled in his conscience for en deavoring to destroy the flour and tolwcco trade of Messrs. Thomas, Flemming & Pendleton, that he could not contain himself, so he went and told his troubles to “Miss Mary Walk er, kurlered,” and this dusky maiden went and whispered the same to “vc Cops.” “Sich is life.” This prodigal Ham isnow feasted by the City Fathers. tST M. We have a law requiring ye hog to be confined within the lots of their re spective owners. “Excuse hnsto and a bad pen,” was no doubt the exonsc of ye Piggies when they left home a few days ago, to find a precarious ex istence on our muddy highways. But the law is inexorable, and the “Cops” are soon on the war-path. The Band Wagon, one by one col lected its musicians, and then the melody commenced—E flat, C sharp, and all the conglomerate notes, from major and minor swinetts swelled out on the midnight air. Said Pigs In bn raised by the same —~ person, and not to he more than C" -Tjyrlve months oM. If our Fair Associations in Georgia would but offer the above-mentioned colossaj premium, every farmer in our State would surely make -the attempt to' raise a portion of his “plantation supplies”—at least, so far as regards that of bacon. U-4H \ There now seems, to exist such an antipathy among our people for swine, (at least, whilst they are alive,) 'that it would seem they were recognized as fiercely carniverous animals, and very dangerous to control. Bnt no sooner are they slain by tbe blood-thirsty butchers of St. Louis, Louisville and Cincinnati, and carefully pa deed— with What courage are they approach- erf the ’famalic devotees of king cotton! ' '• •»! ‘ Seated in the office of his commis sion merchant, the farmer having al ready allowed his Agricultural Congos to dictate the pitching of his crop on a basis- of almost exclusive cotton cul ture, pledges “ a lien” on his cotton bales, or even mortgages his farm, in order to enjoy the juicy contents of the bacon -cask before him. *: Fed by the Western farmer, flic Southern farmer following exclusive cotton culture, must forever he a slave. “ Pig Culture” is one of our means of safety. Yet, .to commence again this long-ahnndoned pursuit, seems al most a herculean task—for in some of our Agricultural districts, “ye swine” has become so completely extinct, that it is rumored “ old John Robinson,” on his next tour South, proposes to add this animal to his Menagerie of living curiosities. The “ Essex” and the “ Berkshire” are to-day, far more valuable to our people than the ferruginous pigs of Cherokee, Georgia, or the Golden Sands of the Chestntee. Nearly all of our farmers are “pig headed" on this subject. Only intro duce tlic subject ot “ pork, or bacon,” and the ready response is, “ We can’t raise lings in Georgia.” How many of our farmers who so report, have made the experiment within the past twelve months? We are sure if they had used the necessary economy on their farms, they could at least, have raised a few pi/73, if not successful in hog-raising on a larger scale. City of Athens Sustained — Supreme Court Decisions—(Synop sis)—Linton vs. Mayor, etc., of Athens. Equity, from Clarke. In this case the complainant allege* that he owns a tract of land, situate one mile and a half from the centre of the city of Athens, (though within its corporate limits) which land is us-nI solely for agricultural purposes, and not for any purpose connected within the municipal corporation, hut upon which ho is compelled to ptv annually to said city a tax of S'.'ft, and that the res(llt is to take Li- private property for public n*e,-and, therefore, the act allowing his land to Ik* taxed bv said citv is unconstitutional. Held, that it is within tlie province of tlie Legisla ture to define the liniitsof a municipal corporation and delegate to tlie cor poration tlie right to tax property therein, and the Courts*',can not inter fere where the law-making power acts within the scope of its authority. These proceed- sngs, if permitted to stand, practically ignore all rights by minorities in all the States; also, what is there to pre vent each of the States recently re-ad- mitted to federal relations, on certain conditions, from changing their con- shtiitipns and violating their pledges. If this action in Arkansas is acquiesced in, I respectfully submit whether a precedent so dangerous to the stability of State government if not of the na tional! goverment, also, should he re cognized hy Congress.
