Bat I’ll ring of the lonely, old churchyards where
our fathers* bones we laid—
Where the cloisters stand, those ruins grand that
our tyrant loc3 have made;
And m strike the harp with a mournful touch,
till tire glist’ning tears will show,
For that dear old land, that sweet old land, where
the beautiful rivers flow.
And I’ll sing of Emmet’s lonely fate, and of his
lonely grave—
■ Of his early doom, and his youthful bloom, and his

| And ah ! how blest and ealm his rest, tho’ li is grave

I In that dear old land, that sweet old land, where

, And I’ll sing of Tone and the Geraldine, proud

i They won the crown—the martyr’s crown—and
they sleep in shade and rest;
; In heavenly mould their names are rolled—they

For that dear old land, that sweet old land, where

Whose only word was the shining sword—whose

eye of the visitor, while the personnel
of the Convention was certainly far in
advance of what we anticipated before
we arrived. To speak in generttl
terms,—the ministers were fine look

deportment was well in keeping with

a man of unusually fine abilities, and
as a presiding officer, certainly comes
fully up to our idea of the accomplish

“ One of the leading and most prom
inent ministers of the conference drop
ped in to bid us good-bye, on his wav
to the A it O train, yesterday, and
just hail time to say that the colored
men had no quarrel with Southwest
ern Georgia; that Albany had demon
strated a spirit of friendship and good
fellowship; that she had liberally, no
bly and christl'idy entertained the
conference, and that the conference
were informed that tho white citizens
had contributed over four hundred
dollars to their comiort while iu the
city—a circumstance unprecedented
since the war.
If these preachers preach the truth,
as they saw it and must have felt it
whilst in Albany, they will create a
revolution in Georgia, for their Bishop
struck the key-note on Sunday, and
none but fools or knaves—black or
white, will disregard the solemn les
son the old man so eloquently and so
powerfully impressed.
As the “ Key-Note” above alluded
to, was the very appropriate sermon of
the Bishop delivered on Sunday of tho
Conference, from Paul’s epistle to the
Romans, 1st chap., 16th verse—“For
I am not ashamed of the gospel of
Christ, for it is the power of God unto
salvation to every one that believeth”—
we re-produce from the News, the
closing remarks of the Rev. speaker:

works of satan aud overthrowing the
king;lorn of darkness. Tho power of
this glorious gospel is seen everywhere
iu the hearts and the lives of the
people of God. You have been told
that this land was not the place for the
colored man ; that the white man and
the colored man could'not live in peace
and that you would have to leave the
country. Yuu have been told that
nu must leave the graves of your
fathers and loved ones behind you and
seek other shores, for that the white
men were hostile to your.interests and
that they were your enemies. But
the falsity of such teaching is seen by
our gathering this morning. Here is
your Bishop—a black Bishop, preach
ing to you in a white man’s pulpit.
The white people are friendly to you ;
the country needs the black man, and
if you live and exemplify in your
lives the power of thc gospel of Chris’,
you will bo recognized as the children
of the same God, nnd members of that
family" of which Christ is the elder
brother. As God led Israel hy a way
they knew not, so He is leading you,
nnd' lie will lead you into the right
way. A better day is dawning for the
colored mail, as well ns for the white
man, and to you He says as He said to
Israel “ stand still ami see the salva
tion of God!”
The colored people look tothe white
men of the South for protection and
instruction. They were horn and
reared together; some nursed at the
same breast.
Notwithstanding all that has been
said and done, the two races are get-
intervene. In regard to
thc prospects of its passage, there
is a good deal of diversity of opin
ion ; but the best judgnieut is,
that it will be defeated. A large
delegation-of representatives of
thc Western Union Telegraph
Company are in the city working
against its passage. There are
those who say it is n mere stock
jobbing operation. This hill con
tains a feature characteristic of
Ben Butler. It says that tele
grams ' sjpll not l»e divulged by
any agent or officer of a telegraphic
company except for thc purpose
of justice, hy order of a court of
competent jurisdiction or commit
tee of Congress.’ This is carry
ing out the policy of seizing pri
vate dispatches initiated at the
time of thc celebrated impeach
ment trial. The hill is understood
to he favored by the Administra
tion, and dovetails with their poli
cy of building up ail absolute
government.—Cincinnati Enqui

Not as politicians, hut as Christian
brethren. Parties, platforms, measures
and nations themselves may perish,
but the Gospel of which Paul was not
ashamed, shall live forever.
Why? because it is the power of
God to all who believe.
This Gospel; this sweet Message of
Love is the “Oil of Joy" to the broken
hearted. When its spirit shall per
meate the hearts of our Rulers and
Statesmen, rest shall come to our war-
stricken South. This same bright land,
where the beautiful magnolia nnd the
cotton boll sway .to the semi-tropic
breeze, shall become thc garden of the
continent.
This same generous people will
evangelize and educate its black pop
ulation.
The Christian men of the country,
not the professional politicians, will do
this mighty work.
Then brother Itinerants, preach and
live His gospel. Lift up the banner in
city, town, hamlet and forest. Sound
the trumpet of spiritual and inor.il
freedom; for ho whom the truth makes
free, is free indeed.
We, as a race, may be the possessors
of every civil and political right, yet
if we. live intemperate, indolent* licen
tious or atheistic, we are under the do
minion of the worst kind of oppression
—the bondage of sin
Let all classes of men labor to pro
mote a fraternal feeling between both
races, and the hour will soon come
when'peace and rest shall prevail
throughout all the broad South.

A Hint to Young Men.
In 1855, a young gentleman re
gistered his name in thc largest
hotel in thc city of Louisville, Ky.
lie had a pretty good wardrobe,
such as young men usually have,
including a gold watch and chain.
He was in search of occupation.
At the expiration of tivo weeks,
he took an inventory of his per
sonal effects ; ' Out of work and
no money.’ He luid a brief inter
view with the ''proprietor of thc
hotel. His trunk was left as se
curity for his hill; ho hypotheca
ted his watch for the loan of ten
dollars, and having kissed the
tip end of his coral fingers to :i
kind and sympathetic landlord, he
* went diving for the bottom.’- He
found ' bottom’ on Water Street,
whore a steamer was being dis
charged of cotton hy Dutchmen,
negroes and yankees. Having
purchased a heavy pair of boots,
a bine shirt and overalls, he com
menced rolling and pulling cotton
ill the rate of five cents a hale.—
In three weeks, he was promoted
to the position of 'marker,’ with
a salary of forty-five dollars per
month, and at the expiration of
nine mouths, he had a right to
grow mellow over a salary of one
hundred and twenty-five dollars
per month. To-day, this gentle
man is one of the largest business
operators in Bay street.

A Hog that went to a Funeral.
A few days ago, says thc Louis
ville Courier-Journal, while u fu
neral procession was coming up
Ninth street, on thc way to Cave
Hill Cemetery, a hog, apparently
about one year of age, ran from
the corner of Ninth and Jefferson,
and followed after thc hearse.—
The corpse was that of a man who
died on Eighteenth street. But
this fact has no connection with
thc singular .action of the swine.
After proceeding for some dis
tance between the hearse and first
carriage, only uttering now nnd
then a friendly grunt, some per
sons attending thc carriages tried
to drive thc brute away; but in
stead of running out of the way,
he only stuck closer to the wheels
of thc hearse, and thus he followed
on to the grave. Here, he skir
mished out to one side and stood
