CAERIEB'S ADDRESS
TO THE
Patrons and Friends of the
"EARLY COUNTY NEWS.”
Kind readers of the Nines, another bow,
Respectful, manly—yes, not meanly low.
My weekly calls have well filled up the
year,
* And now I'come to wish you all good cheer.
The wish is hearty, and it is not vain ;
For you’ve been blessed with seasonable
rain,
Most of the year, to fill your barns with
grain— s - '
With common health aud freedom from
sore pain—
N*r has the tread of Yankee left its stain
On soil of your section, free, thus far,
From raids and ruins of this wicked war.
While glad, be thankful for your lot, and
feel
For those who feel the .the raider's fire and
steel.
While blessed with plenty, food andcloth
ing furnish
To those who still their faithful weapons
burnish,
Ready to meet the foe in deadly fight
On Northern border, aud to put to flight
The vandal hosxa that seek, in fiendish
spite,
The lot of your inheritance to blight.
True, we have met with serious disasters;
15ut, thanks to heaven ! our foes are not
yet masters.
They eeem to think so, judging from the
action
Os Lincoln’s CoDgTess, as their every fac
tion
Is flushed with hope, and ready with a plan
To end the war, and give to every man
A goodly shore of all the dear bought booty—
A farm to fertile, and. a huyrrve of beauty.
Masters they would, aud WILL, be, if .we
suffer
This war to weary us, though ten times
rougher.
Go road the story of tho “Revolution,”
And let your souls imbibe new resolution.
Let us not falter under any trial,
Rut gird us up for toil and Belt-denial.
The wretch who plans and works aloue for
self,
In times like these, is hoarding up hispelf
To rust, or canker, or to fall a prey
To Yankee greed in the disastrous day.
That day, so dark !so terrible!—that day,
every Southern heart, be far away !!
Re far away! Yes, far as East from West!!
Our cause secured, our homes all free—how
blest!!!
So we all wish, and, if wc toish but rightly,
The blest reality will dawn so brightly.
<‘A people to be free, have bat to will it”
Said Lafayette ; O rnay we now fulfill it !
Then let the. miser, the coward and the
drone
Wake up to tho crisis, and do what must
be done,
ft wc would live the owners of our soil;
Else, we shall lose the treasure, blood aud
toil
Already spent, and go down in disgrace,
A hissing and-a by-word to the race.
Let all be patriots in tho real sense,
And seek our country’s home and field
defense.
“ My country saved,” bow I should love to
Bing,
And in the Newt the joyful tidings bring!
Well, Sixty-Three, with all its ill and good,
Is numbered now with years beyond tho
flood :
Its weeks and months will visit us no more;
For we are entering on Sixty-Four.
Through tho past year I tramped with
cheerful speed
To bring the News, but through one Mr.
Sneed,
Who bought the office, I came well nigh
falliugj
Rut my old master, who was still in calling,
Stretched out his hand and-kept me on my
feet,
And hence you find me still in “ Office
Street
Here will I labor Btill in his employment,
And weekly visit you for your enjoyment.
Thanks for the proseats last year kindly
given,
Hoping no tie of friendship has been riven.
You made up TEN : now, money is so
plenty,
Is it too much to make me np a TWENTY 7
WTiate’er you give will cheer an orphan’s
heart,
Wails he, in torn, shall do his grateful
part
In setting types,'and Lasting then to ink
them,
For printing thoughts, whoever else may
think them.
Say, shall the Acres work on to raise the
county
As high in order as in Heaven’s bounty 7
Let ail who discontinued once, take heed
That GftOUBY holds again: not Mr. Sneed.
Then give your patronage, yes, give it
yearly,
Aod see how much 'twill do for good old
Early.
