There is still hope for peace in
Korea, many observers believe,
though the Allies have not at the
moment accepted , , the Communist
pro
posal on exchanging prisoners of
war. The Allies didn’t accept it, but
neither did they reject it.
The Red proposal suggests a five
nation neutral repatriation commis
sion to handle the 48,500 Reds held
by the Allies who do not want to go
home. Why, the United Nations
wants to know, should the question
of the prisoners of war be referred
to a political conference for solution
once it has been presumably resolved
by these delegations on the basis of
the principle of turning over to a
neutral state for disposition?
This and a number of other ques
tions have been hurled at the Reds
by the U. N. delegate in Korea.
A number of authorities who seem
to know the way the Chinese mind
works, believe that the five-nation
commission plan is as far as China
will go. If, these authorities suggest,
the U. N. turns down this plan then
the entire Far Eastern situation is
likely to remain stalemated indefi
nitely.
# What is to become of federal
lands in the west?
This question has been raised by
criticis of the Eisenhower adminis
tration. They ask it because of the
adminstration’s efforts to turn over
to the states the rich off-shore oil
reserves. They suggest that this ac
tion is the first step in a “give-away”
of the country’s public-land wealth.
These critics point out that once
the states gain control of the sea
ward reserves they will immediately
turn their attention to the mountains
and the forests that belong to the
federal government. Many indus
trial interests have long eyed the
tremendous reserves of timber, min-

erals, water and other resources of
these federal lands.
In the western states, the federal
U ,government owns tracts ranging from
5 per cent of the total area in
Washington to nearly 85 per cent in
Nevada. These lands have returned
the federal government large
amounts of money and, at the same
time, the government has practiced a
policy of conservation.
If turned over to the states, crit
ics of the administration say, these
lands would become subject to im
mediate “grab” by industrial inter
ests who have an eye on profit and
are unconcerned about conservation.
The administration has said it has
no intenton of letting go of the
public wealth. But at the same time,
there is a trend at work in Congress
toward revising grazing nights on
public lands as well as the harvest
ing of timber arid production of
minerals and oil.
The problem is now in its initial
stage, but is one that the American
public should begin to give serious
consideration.
# A test is shaping up that will
be of interest to watch. Wage talks
between the nation’s steel workers
and the industry are scheduled' to
get underway soon. It will he the
first test of the administration’s new
labor pattern.
The question is: Can the White
House keep out of the labor disputes?
That is the White House policy un
der the new administration. Under
the Truman administration that was
impossible.
Pressing Seams
Keep an ironing board and iron
set up while sewing and press each
seam as it is finished. This produces
neater, more tailored results, and
makes the final pressing a simple
matter.
