DISTRICT MEETS
FOR 4-H MEMBERS
BEGIN IN JUNE
Thousands of 4-H Club members
all over Georgia are brushing up on
their speeches and educational dem
onstrations and are putting final
touches to their record books as
they prepare for District Project
.Achievement Meetings which will
start in June.
'County eliminations have been
held in a number of counties already,
and the district meetings are the
next step up the long ladder toward
state and national 4-H champion
ships.
Mrs. Martha Harrison and L. R.
’Dunson, assistant state 4-H Club
leaders for the University of Geor
gia Agricultural Extension Service,
gave the following schedule for the
district events: Southeast, June 15-
17, at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural
College, Tifton; Southcentral, June
17-19, also at ABAC; Northwest,
July 1-3, at West Georgia College,
Carrollton; Southwest, July 8-10, at
Georgia Southwestern College, Amer
icas; Northeast, July 13-14, at the
University of Georgia, Athens; and
North, July 15-16, also at the Uni
versity.
Twenty-six counties will be repre
sented at four of the meetings, while
27 counties will be represented at
the other two.
Each district meeting will feature
competition in 15 projects for boys
and 19 projects for girls. These ac
tivities include everything from muf
fin making to tractor maintenance.
In addition to the junior and
senior boys and girls who will com
pete for district project champion
ships, each county will send two
voting delegates who will elect Dis
trict Council officers for 1954.
'District officers and advisers for
this year will be on hand at each
meeting, and will play a large part
in executing the program.
County and home demonstration
agents will be in charge of county
delegations, and will help 4-H lead
ers, Extension subject-matter spe
cialists, the 4-H officers and advisers
conduct the program.

REPLACE OLD HENS
The most successful poultrymen
raise out enough pullets each spring
and summer to replace the old hens
100 per cent each fall, according to
poultry specialists for the Agricul

raised primarily to keep up egg pro
duction when the old hens start
failing in production in the fall.

“Pumpkin Pine”
As a furniture wood, pine has
been gaining increasing favor. Many
pine pieces are being finished to
simulate antique or Early American
furniture. One of these finishes,
known as “pumpkin pine” is a mel
low yellow color. One way of obtain
ing this finish is to apply a blend
of orange shellac and light mahog
any spirit stain. A final coat of
straight orange shellac is applied
before the finished surface is rubbed
with 4/0 steel wool and waved to a
dull lustre.
