Plans To Seek
Old House Seat
Former 2nd District Congressman
Dawson Mathis announced Friday
that he will be a candidate for re
election to The House of Represen
tatives seat he held for ten years
before relinquishing it two years ago.
Mathis told an enthusiastic, overflow
crowd of supporters at an Albany
news conference that he is convinced
the district is not receiving the caliber
of leadership it deserves.
The Berrien County native said he is
offering the people of the second
district his ten years of service and
his record of legislative
achievements. He asked the people of
the district to judge him based on that
record. Mathis told the news con
ference, “For the past fifteen months
I have watched with great interest the
activities of my opponent. And I have
become totally convinced that the
people of this district are not receiv
ing the caliber of leadership they
deserve. These feelings have been ex
pressed to me and to others by people,
both black and white, all across this
district.” Mathis added, “People
from al) walks of life, agriculture,
business, industry, every segment of
our economy are hurting like never
before. And despite the economic
chaos in the business community,
despite the despair and hopelessness
that faces our farmers, despite the
uncertainty facing our older
Americans, despite al) these uncer
tainties and problems during 15 mon
ths of holding office, the records of the
United States Congress reveal that
my opponent had not introduced one
single original piece of legislation.
There is not a single bill or resolution
that has been dropped into the hopper
