Two Elections Next Tuesday
There will be not one, but two elec
tions here next Tuesday. Voters will
be going to the polls to vote in the
Special Congressional Primary Run
off election.
In the Special Congressional

Rural Fire Premiums
To Be Coming Down
Beginning September Ist, a number
of rural Early County property
owners will begin getting a break in
the cost of their fire insurance.
With the cooperation of the County
Commissioners and City of Blakely,
the hard work of volunteer Rural Fire
Chief Waymon Thomas, Blakely Fire
Chief Franklin Brown and a large
number of other volunteer
firefighters, the Insurance Services
Office of Georgia has changed some of
the county’s fire insurance classifica
tions.

In recognition of the fact that Blake
ly’s citizens have shown an ever
increasing concern with the welfare of
the nation’s victims of neuromuscular
disease, Mayor Billy Fleming this
week proclaimed September 4-5-6 as
Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon
Weekend.
Mayor Fleming urges all citizens to
give full support to the programs of
the Muscular Dystrophy Association,
and to the increasing efforts of its Na
tional Chairman, Jerry I^ewis.
The Jerry Lewis Labor Day
Telethon provides major support for
the Muscular Dystrophy Association,
which sponsors a worldwide program
of scientific research on
neuromuscular diseases and main
tains a network of 230 clinics to serve
patients throughout the country suf
fering from this crippling illness.
It is an honor for the City of Blakely
to help The Jerry Lewis I^abor Day
Telethon - an event which each year
units millions of volunteers from
every comer of America and which,
with the dollars it raises, benefits the
lives of so many more.
During the weekend, the Blakely
Jaycees are sponsoring a “Skate-A-

If you read Early Joel the first time
around, you do not want to miss this
one. The writings of Joel W. Perry'
have been indexed, making it possible
to quickly look up those old family
names and places of yesteryears.
If you don't have a copy of the first
edition of Early Joel, you cannot af
ford to miss this one. It is the only
source in print of the early writings of
the history of Early County as they
were printed by the early editions of
the Early County News.

Blakely-Early County Recreation
will sponsor a Women's Singles Ten
nis Tournament on September 10th. If
you are interested in playing in this
tournament, please call the Recrea
tion Office and a form can be mailed
to you, or you may come by the office
and register. The fee for this event
Will be $5.00, both money and registra
tion forms must be in the Recreation
Office by Tuesday, September 7th at
12:00 Noon.
Congressional District.
The date of all the congressional
races was up in the air until two weeks
ago as the Federal Courts and
Georgia Legislators argued over re
districting.
Everyone who was registered by
August 23, regardless of whether they
voted Democrat or Republican, can
Blakely (outside city limits), Jakin,
Lucile, Cedar Springs, Rock Hill, and
Damascus have been changed from
Class 10 to Class 9.
This change in classification will
mean an overall savings of about 7%
in fire insurance premiums for the
peoperty owners in those areas.
County Administrator Billy Broad

worked real hard on our county-wide
fire protection plan. We hope this is
just the beginning of the savings we
can create for the property owners in
the future.”

residents. There will also be bands

the Sawyer Shopping Center parking

The Blakely Jaycees are sponsoring
a “Skate-A-Thon” Saturday,
September 4th to help raise money for
the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The Skate-A-Thon will be held at the
Galaxy Skate Center on South Blv in
Blakely from 12 noon until 12 mid
night.
Participants who raise over $750.00
will win an Atari Video Game; over
SSOO -a Walk Man Portable Cassett;
over $250 -a black & white TV; and
over $75 -a Jerry I^wis Wrist Watch.
Additional free skating prizes will be
given.
Skaters wishing to register for the
“Skate-A-Thon” may do so at the
Suwannee Swifty Stores on North
Main and South Church, Rick’s Old
Style Restaurant, Wadeco Art Glass,
and Galaxy Skate Center.

Packer Football
The Early Co. Packer Football
squads are preparing for their 1982
seasons.
Consisting of one 9 & 10 year-old
team and one 11 & 12 year-old team,
the Packers have been practicing for
two weeks now in preparation for
their September 4 opener in Colum
bia, Ala.
This weekend the squads will travel
to Columbia to meet the Headland
Rams in a half-game scrimmage in a
pre-season jamboree.
The first game will begin at 7 p.m.
vote next Tuesday in the Special Con
gressional Primary.
As always, anyone who voted
Republican August 10 will not be able
to vote in the Democratic Primary
Run-off.
Only three races ended up in a run
off after the voters went to the polls,

The Early County Bobcats will host
Cook Co. here Friday night at Stan
difer Field to kick-off the 1982 football
season.
New head coach Ric Hall, hoping
this year’s team will be represen

The Southwest Georgia Academy
Warriors open their 1982 football
season Friday night when they
journey to Dixie to meet Westbrook
Academy.
The Warriors will have Wayne
Talley as Head Coach this season who
will take over from Jimmy Sealy who
was head coach at SGA for eleven
years.
Coach Sealy, who will be trying to

we lose one player, it really means
two.” The Warriors have 32 in camp
