Sales Tax Generates
Nearly $ 7 Million
The local option sales tax gerenated
nearly one million dollars for Early
County and its municipalities during
1982.
Statewide, $188,610,310.35 in local
option sales tax collections were
distributed to 112 counties and 308
municipalities participating.
The Georgia Department of
Revenue collects the local option sale
tax for participating counties and
municipalities. All funds derive from
the tax, with the exception of a one
percent fee for collections, are return
ed to the local government. Funds

The Blakely-Early County Chamber
of Commerce will present Starlight
Productions Friday, January 14th at
7:30 P.M. at the Early County High
School. The Annual Membership Din
ner will be a unique experience for
everyone attending.
Not only will the entertainment be
outstanding, but the atmosphere will
be one of a supper club. Guests will be
seated immediately upon arriving at
the High School and be served their
dinner.
Tickets are on sale at the Chamber
office on 2 Court Square. If you plan to
attend, the tickets will be available
until Thursday at 5:00 P.M.

The 1982 distributions compared to
$169,091,443.46 distributed to 103 coun
ties and 292 municipalities during
calendar 1981.
The local option sales tax generated
$997,268.28 in Early County. The Early
County Board of Commissioners
received $553,483.89; the City of
Blakely received $398,907.32; the City
of Arlington $24,931.68; and the City of
Damascus $19,945.39.
The local option sales tax was im
plemented in October of 1981.

Public Cautioned To Beware
Following Rabid Cat Attack
According to Perry Bridges of the
Early County Health Department,
there has been a case of rabies con
firmed in a stray cat from the Odum
Subdivision Area of the county. As a
result of an umprovoked bite from
this cat, a young man is having to take
the rabies shots. While there has been
much improvement in the number
and methods of these shots when

Named By City Council
Mr. George A. Loyed of Albany,
Georgia has been named as the new
City Administrator for the City of
Blakely.
The Mayor and Council made their
decision at a special meeting Monday
night which concluded a three month
long search for an administrator.
Seventeen applicants were con
sidered for the Job and seven of those
were interviewed by the Mayor and
Council.
According to Mayor Billy Fleming,

SFC John P. McGriff of the
Donalsonville State Patrol Post an
nounced today that his post has in
vestigated 61 traffic accidents, made
608 arrests and issued 615 warnings in
Early county during year 1982.
Commenting further SFC McGriff
said 38 persons were injured with
none killed.
December Saw 20's & 80's
The temperature during December
ranged from the 20’s to the 80’s accor
ding to weather observer Wayne
Foster.
The low temperature was 28
degrees, recorded December 13, 14,
and 18. The high temperature was 83
degrees on December 3. The mean
maximum was 66.2 degrees, mean
minimum 45.47 degrees, and mean

Motion made by Ralph Jenkins and
seconded by G.W. Davis, Jr. to cor
rect the error made in the December
7, 1982, minutes renewing the beer
license for Means Case for 1983. L.E.
Radney made the motion instead of
J.H. Radney. Motion passed.
Motion made by J.H. Radney and
seconded by L.E. Radney to dispense
with the reading of the previous
month’s minutes. Motion passed.
Motion made by G.W. Davis, Jr.
and seconded by J.H. Radney restric
ting the sell of pipe to only those peo
ple who live in Early County. Motion
passed.

total of 925 pending traffic cases were
disposed in the State court with the
following dispositions: 14 guilty pleas,
633 bond forfeitures, 273 dismissed
and 5 nolo contendere pleas.
Fines and forfeitures amounted to
$43,185.00 which were paid to the State
court of Early county.

cept December 1982, tax releases
totaling $1,115.82. Motion passed. A
copy of these releases is attached to
the minutes.

they do not seem to fear you.
4. Caution your children to avoid
stray and wild animals completely.
American Heart Association
volunteers in Early County will kick
off the American Heart Association’s
1983 fund-raising campaign with their
annual volunteers dinner meeting at
the Early County Middle School
cafeteria on Friday, January 21, at
7:30 P.M.
Dr. Michael H. Mescon, Regents’
Professor of Human Relations and
Chairman, Department of Manage
ment, College of Business at Georgia
State University will be the key-note
speaker. Dr. Mescon was State Heart
Fund Chairperson from 1980-82. Dr.
Mescon is a delightful and entertain
ing speaker.
Special “heart-warming” enter
tainment will be presented by Anna
Hattaway of Dothan, Alabama and
Patty Zipperer’s Aerobic Dancing
Group.
