THE RESURRECTED LORD
Lake 24:1-11; 38-53
Many religious systems of the world
are built around some individual.
Many of the adherents consider a
pilgrimage to the birthplace and the
tomb of their leaders to be of utmost
importance. However, to the Chris
tian, there is no “tomb of the
founder”. The Christian knows the
“empty tomb”.
There are many “theories” that
have proposed to “explain” the resur
rection. Some of the ideas embraced
in our day echo the fabricated story
that the Roman soldiers were paid to
tell. Matthew 28:11-15. The “swoon
theory”-the fainted Lord revived in
the cool tomb, and escaped-def ied the
fact of the beating, thorns, and pierc
ings. The un-regenerate mind finds it
difficult to accept the “supernatural”
happenings as verified events.
The disciples feared for their lives,
when they knew that the Lord was
dead. John 20:19. Yes, they knew the
report of the women. Matthew 28:1;
Mark 16:1. The report given by Peter
and John (John 20:2-10) had not even
dispelled fear from the hearts of the
reporters. They knew, historically,
what had happened to those who had
attempted to overthrow Rome. The
fear, coupled with despondency over
the loss of their Leader, cowed every
heart. Yet, the resurrected Lord did
not forget His own!
The message of the angel had
sparked some hope (Luke 24:6), but
the flicker did not fan into a fervent
flame. The chill wind of religious re
jection and the douse of individual
loneliness seemed to be sufficient to
kill all hope.
As two of the believers made a
journey from Jerusalem to the little
city of Emmaeus, their conversation
centered around the events of the past
few days. As they continued this line
of thought, a Stranger “drew near,
and went with them.” Luke 24:15. The
Stranger questioned them about their
sadness. This caused them to explain
the events, and to express the hope
that had been planted in their
hearts-" But we trusted that it had
been he which should have redeemed
Israel: and beside all this, today is the
third day since these things were
done." Luke 24:21. The report of the
women was passed on to the Stranger.
The One who had Joined the
travellers asked a question. “Then he
said, 0 fools, and slow of heart to
believe all that the prophets have
spoken: Ought not Christ to have suf
fered these things, and to enter into
his glory?" Luke 24:25, 26. He pro
ceeded to “expound unto them in all
the scriptures the things concerning
himself." Luke 24:27.
As the little group neared the little
city, the Stranger was invited to stay
with the two. At the meal, “he took
bread, and blessed it, and brake it,
and gave to them.” Luke 24:30. This
act and the opening of their spiritual
eyes gave them the identity of this
Stranger.
The revelation caused immediate
action on the part of the two. “And
they rose up the same hour, and
returned to Jerusalem, and found the
eleven gathered together, and them
that were with them, saying, the Lord
is risen indeed, and hath appeared to
Simon. And they told what things
were done in the way, and how he was
known of them in breaking bread.”
Luke 24:33-35.
Into this scene of excitement
entered the resurrected Lord. Luke
24:36; John 20:19. Only after “infalli
ble proof" (Acts 1:3) did the disciples
realize the fact. “Then opened he
their understanding, that they might
understand the scriptures...” Luke
24:45.
The fact of the resurrection be ac
cepted by every believer. This
teaching is not “optional". As the
shalt believe in thine heart that God
hath raised him from the dead, thou
shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9. So sim
ple, but so deep! Belief in the resur
rection, or else!
“Proclaim

The message of the Early Church
reaches us. The hope of a personal
resurrection was a part of the
teaching of the past (I Corinthians
15:51-54; I Thessalonians 4:13-17), and
reaches our day with full impact. If
you do not know the resurrected
living-Lord, please accept Him to
day.
