know everything about everybody’s

proper persons, however, to answer
the question are the ladies them

of “single-cussedness,” and desire
to enter the state of “connubial

Here is one thing certain—certain

all concerned, without fear of even
the faintest attempt at contradiction,
that Bainbridge has more pretty

Going to Eunotrc.—Onr young
friend IL B. Ehrlich informs us that
lie will depart for Europe on Satur
day evening noxt, where lie will
remain for several months. He goes
visit has Mends in Germany, and
c wish him much pleasure on his
rip. Only * few years since Mr.
Urlich located in ocr city with no

~ sa and is prosperous. Surely, it

s Mends in “the Fatherland” an-
cr such circumstances.
Deaths.—Mr. Henry Daniels, an
honest, hard-working mechanic of
this city, died on Wednesday even
ing, the flat instant, and was buried
the following day. We regret to
lose saeh men. He was in the prime
of life.
Mr. W. Broome, an old citizen,
breathed his last we betieve on Tues
day evening the 20th inst. He had
lieen act a long time, and his death
was not unexpected.
Mr. J. C. Blount, of Whigham,
in this county, died on Thursday
the 22nd inst.
Returned.—We are happy to an
nounce the return of Dr. A. T.
Bownc and family to this city from
Baltimore, where they have been re
siding for several months past.
A. & G. R. R.—There is one
thing we wish to call the attention
of the Directory of the above road
to, and it as simply to that misera
ble old chicken-coop, yclept passen
ger «5oach, that runs between this
city and Thomasville. It is really a
disgrace to the road. Certainly it
was the first coach built for the road;
and now a partition goes across the
©e*t.c, and *onc end is for the ne-
giroetf, the other«for the whites. It
is a dirty old ci&ffiped-up affair,
and we but express the Sentiment of
cvciy person in Decatur county,
when wc hbpe that 'Major Haines
will put a dccctit CoSftSi In its place.
All other portions of the road are
provided with nice agd comfortable
coaches, then why not let Bainbridge
have the samejshowing ?
Personal.—We had a call last
Tuesday from our young friend
“Nick” Thompson. “Nick” is only
.six months old, but he’s decidedly
the best looking chap we’ve seen for
many a day. When first we saw
this youth it was our candid opinion
that he would excel in the leader
ship of a brass-band; but from the
knowing, cunning, intelligent, and
don’t care a——continental express
ion of his eyes when he looked at ns,
our printers, papers, manuscript
and ■“devil,” the evening he called,
we are forced to the conelusion that
he would make a first rate local edi
tor. If, however, he decides not to
be a local, we predict for him a bril
liant future.
Death or Hon. B. F. Powell.—
This gentleman died at his resident
near this city, on Friday evening
last. Mr. Powell represented Deca
tur county ia the Legislature a great
inaay times prior to the war. He
was reiy successful as a politician,
never having suffered defeat, al
though before the people more than
any other man in the county. At
the close of the war, he thought sub
mission to the reconstruction meas
ures the best policy of the South,
and united himself with the Repub
lican party, and was elected a Rep
resentative in the Legislature. He
0ut that term, when his
health foiled him, and since he had
aspired to no office. He was buried
with Masonic honors.

The Methodist Festival on Fri
day Night.—This was a fine affair—
a new Wrinkle—a Methodist festival;
something never before known in
this community. It was, also, a
success; successful beyond tie ex
pectations of the most sanguine.
The tables were laden with every
luxury imaginable, and were arrang
ed with excellent taste. No “catch
penny” business was indulged in,
but every dime or dollar invested
procured its full value in the good
things so profuse on every hand.
The prize tree was very beautiful.
Over one hundred articles hung on
its branches and glittered through
its foliage. Every ticket drew a
prize, some of which were very use
ful as well as ornamental. Rothe
got a baby’s apron, an innocent
looking, embroidered, little wee bit of
a thing; but it wouldn’t fit Iiotlie—
it was for a little baby. “Walter
Tonge got' a baby—a doll baby.—
Sime W r eil took the cradle. Mayor
Jones came off triumphantly with a
baby-wagon; his Honor is singly
blessed and doesn’t need the ‘ ‘inster-
tootion.” He also drew a pin-cush
ion, which he will find vary useful.
Dr. Hoyl secured a hoe, and we be
lieve Riglander was content with a
pair of hose. We saw Gurley “sky
larking” about the room with his
arms full of odds and ends, and we
guessed lie was going to set up a
toy-shop.
Alter the'’prize-tree was disposed
of, several very large pound-cakes
were sold at auction. Some of these
cakes were exquisitely beautiful—all
were pretty, Cox, the inimitable
Cox, he of the beaver and provoking
smile, the same chap who clerks for
A. T. Reid & Co., bid off the hand
somest cake in the lot. We hear he
went right off next day and laid it to
gether with himself at^the feet of the
Pee. Gee. in Gee. Bully for Cox! We
learn that others followed Cox's ex
ample,! which was ia every way
worthy of imitation.
This sale being over, the auction,
eer, Mr. W. W. Harrell, cried off
the balance of the edibles left from
the festival, consisting of boiled
hams, tnrkeys, chickens, ducks,
pigs, and too many other good
things to mention. They sold quietly.
The net receipts of the festival
amounted to $201,10, a sufficient
sum to. complete the furnishing of
the parsonage.
Too much praise cannot be award
ed the ladies who managed And con
trolled the festival. They were few,
but they worked faithfully, and en
ergetically, attaining their object,
which could have been done in no
other way. , And we presume the
minister will be just as comfortable,
and nest quite as well, in his newly
and nicely furnished residence, as if
the means by which' it was accom
plished had been Sunday collections,
or by the fatiguing drumming of
church stewards. The ladies referred
to are Mrs. W. H. Allen, Mrs. J. A.
Zeigler, Mrs. Emery Johnson. Mrs.
B. F. Bruton and Mrs. . J, D. Har
rell. ' * * ''' u lL ~‘
In behalf of the ladies, we return
their sincere thanks to all who con-
triboted to the festival, and also to
those who attended and patronized
it so liberally.
