The Weekly Democrat.
ThirWsr, Prhmtty
In Memori am.—Under this cap
tion the poet laureate of the Bowl
ing Green (Ky.) Pantograph writes
of the nonie yonng Louisvilic lady
who relused to accompany Alexis to
Mammoth Cave:
Humh! for Miss Morton, the Louisville
girl,
\Cbo refused the Grand Duke the tip of her
curl.
And felt that her hand, in love or in barter,
Should never be claimed by Colmuc or
Tartar;
That her exquiaite.face and unequaled per
son
Should never bo worshiped at Moscow or
Kherson.
Let the Grand Duke look out to soothe his
young dawn
For a Coburg, jor something akin to Dutch
brawn,
Or a Puritan ready to swap for a dollar
Her shoddy-decked carcass, trom shoe tie to
. collar.
A true Southern girl is above, not beneath,
A Muscovite Prince on her own native beath.
A Singular Will Case.—The
heirs of Betsey Williams, a lineal de
scendant of Roger. Williams, who
died recently in Providence, leaving
the larger part of her property, esti
mated at $2,000,000, to the munici
pal authorities there, they say she
was of unsound mind at the time of
her decease, and are on the eve of
entering a suit lor recovery of the
property in the co'irts in that city,
as'sevcral of them have taken up
their residence there. The old lady
was very penurious and never wrote
to her relatives declaring paper,
envelopes and postage would ruin
her. She lived on the plainest of
food, and had it not been for the
care of relatives would have starved
herself to death, ller peculiarities
were many. She was a monomani
ac on the subject of cleanliness, and
made visitors take ofl' their ^lioes in
the hall. It was her fixed opinion
that the two greatest men who ever
lived were George Washington ^itnd
Roger Williams. Her house was cov
ered with portraits of the latter'and
no visitor must presume to wear his
hat or sit down in the presence of
the likeness of thcjieceascd Roger.
She had a singular religious belief,
. and had a little altar, on which were
placet! daily’;, after breakfast three
inverted cups, which she called the
“Trinity of Holy Tea Leaves,” and
cveryjnorning it was her practice
to spend an hour consulting these
oracles.
Mark Twain on Woman Suf
frage.—Mark Twain says that
when women frame laws, the first
thing they will do will be to enact:
1. That all men should be at
home at 10 p. m., without fail.
2. That married men should be
stow considerable attention upon
their own wives.
3. That it should be a hanging of
fense to sell whisky in saloons, and
that fines and disfranchisement
should follow in such places.
4. That the smoking of segars to
excess should be forbidden, and the
smoking of pipes utterly abolished.
5. That the wife should have the
titlo cl her own property when she
marries a man that hasn't any.
‘jSuch tyranny as this,” says
Mark, “we con\d never stand. Our
free souls could never endure such
t|pgrading thraldom. Woman, go
away 1 Seek not to beguile us of our
imperial privileges. Content your
selves with your little feminine
trifles—your babies, your benevo
lent societies, and your knitting—
and let your natural bosses do the
voting.- Stand back—you will be
wanting to go to war next. We will
let you teach school as much as you
want to, and pay you half price too,
bat beware, we don’t want you to
crowd us too much.”
The Jewish Messenger has an ar
ticle upon “Distinctive Judaism,” in
which we find this genial paragraph.
God has formed us to be a peculiar
people, distinct from all others in
our religious duties. Bat here this
distinction ends. . In every good act
which tends to elevate humanity we
are copartners with the world; we
rejoice in their happiuess, sympa
thize with their sorrows, elevate the
lowly and educate the ignorant. To
be plainly and properly understood,
we aic Jews in the synagogues and
in our dwellings; but in the walks of
life wc are citizens of the world, cos
mopolitan in feeling and sympathy
and action.
