These “coffins" consist of a few pine

loose that a mouse could .easily run
through the cracks. We hear that the
county allows an order of seven dol

is equal to five dollars and twenty-
five cents cash .This seems a fair
price for a decent pine box, nut in
stead of being decent they are a re

pretends to'bury its paupers at all,
for heaven’s sake let them be put
away humanely if not decently.

A set of resolutions, explanatory
of the act, have been adopted by
the Senate, which prbvfde * that the
Governor shall not endorse the bonds
of the Road until the State, of Ala
bama has assured him by statute of
the right and power to seize epaa
the portion of the 1 Road lying In
that State, and. also, that the bonds
shalfiiot be sold for less than eighty
cents in tuc dollar.
Thisjs an important step for our
section^ and, wheh consummated,
will place our little city directly
upon one of the highways Qf the
world. It will also doubtless save
millions to the State. *
I do not know the exact present
status of the bill introduced in the
House by Mr. Bush requiring regis
tration of voters in Decatur county,
but fear it will not be acted upon
this session, as business is hurried
on in hot haste in order to adjourn
as soon as possible, and many local
matters will be neglected.

Editor Democrat:
Having just returned from the 1st
Methodist church, wheie I heard a
most excellent sermon by the “Blind
man eloquent,” Rev. W. II. Mill-
burn, I have concluded that the in
terval Between-10 o’clock p. m. and
my ugu&l bed time could not, or at
any rate would not, be better spent
than in writing a short letter to you
and yetir readers.
The present session of the Legis
lature has, so far, been quite an ani
mated, and exciting one; many im
portant measures have been freely,
and in some cases, heatedly, discus
sed and acted upon. *'■
The bill (which has now become
an act, having finally passed both
Houses) “to protect the interest of
the Statd in the A. & G. Railaoad,”
excited a great deal of interest, and
presented many knotty points for
the consideration of members.
The original bill which provided
for the State’s endorsement . of the
bonds of the Road to the ext ent of
thirty thousand dollars a mile for
the extension from Bainbridge to
Pollard, passed the Senate but was
re-considered. The House bill re
duced the amount of bonds to be en
dorsed to fifteen thousand dollars a
mile; and in this shape passed both
branches of the Legislature and is
now ready for enrollment.
No measure that has been before
the General. Assembly for years has
presented graver poiDts for consid
eration than this. The greater por
tion of the territory through which
the proposed extension wHl run lies
within the jurisdiction of another
State; besides we have just past
through a ten-ihle bond fever, and
the country is still in an excited con
dition on the subject, which circum
stances complicated the matter, and
made the time very inausticious for
the introduction of the bill jn ques
tion. On the other baud the State
is already a stockholder in the road
to the extent of one thousand shares,
which stock had become almost val
ueless, and, if nothing had been
done to rescue it, likely soon to be
come entirely so. The salvation of
this original investment of the State
was the ruling motion on the part of
those who voted for the bill.
charge that he is too officious, and he
magnifying himself. There is a strong
probability ibat they will all bolt from
him in a body.—N. Y. Sun,lbih. '
