THURSDAY, . MARCH 20. 1873.
Present to CoL John Screven by the
Police Force of Savannah.
Yesterday afternoon about qnartcr to
six o’clock, the residence of Col. John
Screven, corner of Abercorn and Con
gress streets, was the scene of a most
pleasant affair. The occasion was the
presentation to Colonel Screven, by the
Police Force of Savannah, of a very
handsome French Parlor Clock, two
beautiful Vases, and some other mantel
ornaments of unique design, in all
eight pieces, as a testimonial of the
high appreciation they had for him as
an officer and esteem they bore for him
as a gentleman. The affair was very
quietly managed, and but few outside
of the force knew anything of the pro
posed compliment. At half past five
o’clock nearly the entire Police Force
assembled at the Barracks, and preced
ed by Gen. Anderson, marched down
Lincoln to Congres, and thence to the
house of Colonel Screven. Here they
were met by Capt. Geo. A. Mercer, who
had been pressed into service to
make the presentation speech in behalf
of the Force.
The presence of the command being
known, invitation was extended Gen.
Anderson to conduct them into the man
sion. The men were then formed by
twos and proceeded through the hall to
the rear portico, where they were drawn
up in platoons facing the corner room
in which were assembled Col. Screven
and, his family.
The articles had been sent to the
hou^e,- shortly before the arrival of the
police, from Mr. S. P. Hamilton’s jew
elry gtore, and were displayed on a ta
ble in the centre of the room. The
clocjk, of very beautiful design and fin
ish,-bears the inscription, “Presented to
CoL John Screven by the Police Force
of SaVannah, March, 1874."
When the force was properly formed
Capt. Mercer advanced to the open door
way and addressed Col. Screven in his
usual felicitous style, representing in
choice language the kindly feelings
which the police force entertained for
him, and the appreciation of the interest
he has shown in their organization.
There was no attempt at studied for
mality, and the remarks of Capt. Mer
cer were, therefore, the more appropri
ate and touching.
Ool. Screven responded in a most feel
ing manner, and was evidently very
much touched by this exhibition of the
regard felt for him by the police force.
A force, which he stated, for discipline,
bravery and fidelity was unsurpassed by
any in the country. At times his feel
ings almost overcame him, and he could
hardly proceed. At the conclusion of
bis remarks, he extended the force,
through their chief, a cordial invitation
to accept the hospitalities of his house
as his friends.
The company then assembled around
a lafgc table, on the portico, graced
with an abundance of punch, cham
pagne, etc., and we presume enjoyed the
occasion with genuine zest. After
which the men bade their host a per
sonal adieu, aud returned to their usual
duties.—Sav. Mews.
