cd a letter from th„ „ c ... ^ citn and v^ll-seB goods- a* re^sonab
ed a letter from the ^'Brooks Sewing-
Machine Company, of No. 1329 Broad
way, New York,” signed by “J. B.
Brjofcj, Eqcretary” requesting . as to
publish their advertf&ment of “Ati En
tirely New Sewing Machine,” for only’
five dollars, with the new patent button
hole worker, &c., &c. Said Company
write ns that we shall draw drafts for
our pay for advertising on them quar
terly a; the expiration of each quarter
of three months, an4 that they “will
be met promptly.” They also “wish to
deal direct with publishers, and not
through agents,” &c.
Well, for the benefit of our readers
we simply say that there is no 85 sew
ing machine manufactured worth as
many cents, and that the “Brooks Sew
ing Machine Company” is a fraud, and
an old one at that. Every year the
same character of air advertisement is
sent out to publishers, and many seedy
individuals who run newspapers.publish
them and after the first three months
the IdlFis sent and that is the last of
it.' “ '
Year before last the advertisement
was headed the “Duplex Machine Co,”
and last year “A Family Article,” and
now it is tho “Brooks Machine Co.”
Of course these advertisements humbug
many good people, especially that class
of people who are not able to own a
high-priced machine. A sewing ma
chine fer five dollars! is an idea that (
captivates them, and they send the S5
to the “So and So” Machine Company,
and they never hear of it afterwards.
We have given the above free adver
tisement of -Brooks Sewing Machine
Company” for the benefit of “our read
ers^ who being thus forewarned are fore-
firmed.. “Mr, J. B, Brooks, Secretary,”
is informed that we cannot publish his
advertisement, but if we could, we’d
send he and all other like grand rascals
to the Peniteutiary where they belong.
Burglary.—During the silent hours
of Monday night last, the jovial bur
glar, aspiring to ramble among the
shelves and show cases of the fine stock
of clothing of Noel Gauey & Co., itt
the Bowne Block, provided himself with
an old chisel, with which he removed
two layers of the bricks of the chimney
in the rear of the fireplace, and but for
the breaking of the chisel or the sud
den approach of some one, the remain
ing layer would have been removed and
the store entered.
Some time since, it will be remem
bered. the store of II. II. Spear was en
tered by the saute process, only through,
the brick wall of the house, and it is prob
able’that the same party or parties were
on the similar errand Monday night.
From these operations, we are con
strained to believe the burglar a town
institution, and resident operator, which
appeal to our police and our merchants
to be wide awake, or the next time, the
thieves many be more successful in
the use of the chisel or jimmy.

in a lumber-room in the house, and was
caused by the foolishness of a little bo\

rubbish.

people don’t like to inquire about

they can much easier read of induce

A Young Student’s Essay.
The following article, written in the
Wise Fool's Soliloquy, and read in the
Louisville, Ky. Male High School ex
hibition, exhibits a great fund of logic:
nothing.
As I had nothing to write about, I
thought I wrould write ab >ut nothing.
At a first glance it seems almost im
possible to say something about nothing.
Nothing means not anything. God
made the world and all that is in it out
of nothing.
What is dearer to any person than
home? Nothing. Wh it is dearer to a
school-bov. after 2 o’clock, than a din
ner? Nothing. What is dearer to the
girl of the period than a bustle! Nothing.
What does any one love better than his
life? Nothing.
Thus we might ask thousands of
questions, and to evey one we would re
ceive the answer, nothing.
Therefore we see that many persons
like -nothing” better than anything
else.
I believe I have said all I know about
nothing, and therefore I will say noth
ing more. Yours respectfully,
“Nuso”

The New Orleans Picayune, in an ar
ticle upon the question of paying tax
es to the Kellogg usurpation, has the
following:
Are the tax-payers of this city, who
are in any doubt whether they will com
bine with their fellow citizens to resist
the attempts, by the most outrageous
and shameful modes ever proposed in a
country professing to he free and Re
publican, to collect the exhorbitant and
illegal taxation upon our people by a
usurping Government, aware of the
amount of taxes which it is proposed to
collect this year ? Many of these flat
ter themselves with the idea that they
will get off with a tax of five per cent
State and city. Tnis is a grievous er
ror. Besides the regular State and city
tax for the past year, the act of the
Bayonet Legislature to enforce the col
lection of taxes, which our readers will
find in our columns to-day,gives to the
State officers the same power and author
ity to collect all antecedent unpaid tax
es for the years preceeding the last as
are conferred in regard to the taxes of
last year.
These taxes will amount for the State,
we learn, 87,000,000, which, added to
the 85,000.000 collectable for the year
1872, will swell the grand total to say
812,000,000, which can he collected by
the same processes provided in the in
famous enforcement act passed by the
Kellogg Legislature.
Add to this the eity taxes uncollect
ed aBd we have the enormous sum, say
of 2©;660,000j or rover 20 per cent, oi
the assessed value of the property of
this city, which is to be collected ac
cording to Kellogg’s proclamation by
civil or criminal process out of the pen
pie. It would be well for those timid
or ov^f prudent people who now propose
to pay their taxes for last year, to bear
in mind the effect of their submission
to such demands—which is simply an
acquiescence in the spoliation and eon
fiscation of the property of this people
for the emolument of jobbers, adventur
ers, rings and the agents of foreign hoi
ders of bnnds.-pt-omincnt among whom
is the present fraudulent and usurping
so-called Govern >r of Lousiana.

A Thrilling Scene.
There is an element of dream like ter
ror in the following adventure which
befell the aeronaut Beudet on the occa
sion of -the late vice-regal marriage feast,
at Cairo. A performance was given
very Sunday in the large IIippodrom8
by an Anglo-French troupe, engaged by
the Khedive of Egypt, to which the
public had free admission. Among the
attractions presented by the perfuruiers
was the balloon ascent of the aeronaut
Beudet. Just as the “Rio du Ciel ” as
his balloon was named, was about to
rise up into the air, Beudet fastened his
trapeze to the car, clunggto it with one
hand, and cried, “let go.” The balloon
rose to a height of about 400 yards,
when a cry of horror burst from the
crowd, a tremendous Tent had taken
place in thq-globeitf the “Rio du Ciel.”
The balloon descended slow 1 at first, but
the wind soon rushed into the gaping
aperture to its side, and turned it liter
ally inside out, whereupon it gave out a
cloud of smoke and took the form of a
flag-case. The unhappy aeronaut now
fell almost perpendicularly; every heart
stood still. Beudet, however, kept his
head, he seized the bar of his trapize
with both hauds, and hung on, tausting
to the slight resistence still opposed to
the air by the balloon ; but its speed
soon increased; he shut his eyes and let
himself go—but not to destruction. He
fell twenty yards on soft ground, and
though senseless when taken up, . very"
soon recovered.
