They must beat diggers-drawn when
ever their own peculiar p diey and aspi
rations become involved. They are now
coalesced in a quasi support of the Re
public. which not one of them favors or
ha* any faith in. The French Repub
lic has been put in the hands of its etv-
emies. MasMabon pledgps himself to
the Assembly to maintain it—and to the
pc pie he announces that- “no immedi
ate change will he made iu. existing
liws. regulations and institutions;” and
and he talks about the fidelity of the
army as a giir.intee for the main-
ten once of order
This is the. kind of discourse we
shnuid expect to hear from a devoted
imperialist, placed by the chapter of ac
cidents at the head of a republic. His
pers n.d b‘story binds him to the for
tune of the Nap de uistB. lie w;.s a
favorite with the late ex-Ku peanr and
created by him Duke of Msigenta fir

in 1859. .Private ambition may warp
his course hereafter, but the world will
naturally lm k for a p lioy le; ding ulti
mately to the te establishment of the
empire.
But his administration cannot stand*
without the support of the Legitmists
and of the Orleanists—each of who’ll is
1< oking to the revival of the legitimate
or the constitutional monarchy. There
can, therefore, be no permanent cohe
sion among his supporters.
On the oUter. side are the Republi
cans—from the Conservative d wn to
the lowest grade of the petroleum Com
munists. As outs the cohesion in this
party will naturally be more perfect
than the other as in.,—but the elements
of discord are as numerous and fatal.
The champion of this new opposition
will now doubtless be Gambetta. in the
role of a Republican pure and simple.
Gambetta is daring and;'adroit, and will
rally the Republican sentiment of France
to his support. Stirring times* are
ahead. MacMahon will in eSfccL be
the representative of force and the op-
position of popular freedom. These
principles seem bound to cross swords
once more in France.—Aluto i Telegraph
